Impact of Open Social Student Modeling on Self-Assessment of Performance
This study examines the impact of Open Student Modeling (OSM) and its extension known as Open Social Student Modeling (OSSM) on students’ self-assessment of their SQL programming performance. It also explores the relationship between self-assessment and normalized gain. The study was performed with graduate students of University of Pittsburgh taking Database Course for the first semester 2014/2015 and ran for 11 weeks. The results demonstrated that both OSM and OSSM positively affect students’ regular self-assessment ability. However, only OSSM was able to positively impact students’ relative self-assessment ability (i.e., compare their SQL knowledge to others). The results also indicated that, students’ self-assessments are positively and highly correlated to their normalized gain
Adaptive learning systems: Supporting navigation with customized suggestions
The aim of this study was to share the results from an experimental research which investigate the effects of link annotations in an educational hypermedia on students’ navigation. This study was conducted through a post-test only control group design with 67 undergraduate students. The voluntary research participants were randomly assigned into the experimental and control group. The required data were collected through an academic achievement test, the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, the Non-Linear Media Disorientation Assessment Tool, a questionnaire about users’ opinions and user logs. The findings showed that the perceived disorientation scores and revisitation rates were significantly lower for the learners who studied in the adaptive environment than those in the non-adaptive environment. It was observed that students’ non-sequential navigation in experimental group increased significantly and they followed the system's advices.

18.23, p<.01]. Uygulanan tek faktörlü ANOVA sonucuna göre; öğrencilerin geri
dönüş oranları çalışılan web ortamı bakımından anlamlı farklılık göstermektedir
[F(1-65)= 10.120, p<.01]. Uyarlanabilir web temelli öğrenme ortamında çalışan
öğrencilerin geri dönüş oranlarının ( =5.282), uyarlamaların bulunmadığı web
temelli öğrenme ortamında çalışan öğrencilerin geri dönüş oranlarından ( =6.335)
daha düşük olduğu belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin ortamlara ilişkin görüşlerinin dağılımı
frekans (f) ve yüzde (%) olarak aktarılmıştır. Uyarlamaların bulunduğu ve
bulunmadığı her iki web ortamında çalışan öğrencilerin de ortamlara ilişkin
memnuniyet düzeylerinin yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca uyarlanabilir ortamda
çalışan öğrencilerin uyarlamalara ilişkin olumlu görüş bildirdikleri ve uyarlamaların
genel anlamda faydalı olduğuna inandıkları görülmüştür.The aim of the research is to investigate the effects of adaptive educational
hypermedia on learners' academic achievements and navigation. The study has the
pretest-posttest, equivalent-groups true experimental design. The independent
varaible of the research is web based learning environment. The independent variable
has two sub levels: the adaptive web based learning environment and the web based
learning environment without adaptation. The dependent variables of the research are
academic achievement, perceieved disorientation, the rate of content map use as
navigation tool and revisitation rates.
The sampling of research is comprised of 67 second year Turkish Language
Teaching students enrolled in Introduction to Computing course studying at Gazi
Faculty of Education, Gazi University in 20072008 Fall semester. The students are
randomly assigned to the adaptive or non-adaptive web based learning environments.
The adaptive web based learning environment is individualized depending on each
student's prior knowledge, behaviours during learning and preferences. Student
modeling and inference mechanisms of the adaptive system are developed based on
Bayesian network model that is one of the artificial intelligence techniques. This
adaptive learning system dynamically modifies links with visual hints to guide users
current state of subjects in content map, shows or hides additional information on the
topic and determines type of content presentation (video or text and visual) based on
a user model.
According to the findings of the covariance analysis (ANCOVA), there is not
a significant difference between the academic achievement scores of both groups
[F(1-64)= 0.577, p>.05]. To verify whether the environment effects the students'
vii
perceived disorientation, one way variance analysis (ANOVA) was conducted [F(1-
65)= 4.35, p<.05]. The findings reveal that the perceived disorientation scores
( X =13.28) of students in the adaptive environment are lower than the scores
( X =15.17) of students in non-adaptive environment. The rate of content map use as
navigation tool is significantly higher in the adaptive environment group [F(1-65)=
18.23, p<.01]. Due to the one-factor ANOVA analysis, there is a significant
difference in the revisitation rates of the students in the favour of students in the
adaptive environment [F(1-65)= 10.120, p<.01]. The revisitation rates ( =5.282) of
students in the adaptive environment are lower than the revisitation rates ( =6.335)
of students in non-adaptive environment. The thoughts of the students about the
learning environments used in the study are given using descriptive statistics. The
students in both groups declare high amount of satisfaction related to the learning
environments. Moreover, the students in the adaptive environment state positive
views on adaptations and their usefulness
The New Trends in Adaptive Educational Hypermedia Systems
This paper aims to give a general review of existing literature on adaptive educational hypermedia systems and to reveal technological trends and approaches within these studies. Fifty-six studies conducted between 2002 and 2012 were examined, to identify prominent themes and approaches. According to the content analysis, the new technological trends and approaches were grouped into seven categories: standardization, semantic web, modular frameworks, data mining, machine learning techniques, social web, and device adaptation. Furthermore, four challenges are suggested as explanation why adaptive systems are still not used on a large scale: inter-operability, open corpus knowledge, usage across a variety of delivery devices, and the design of meta-adaptive systems

Measuring disorientation based on the Needleman-Wunsch algorithm
This study offers a new method to measure navigation disorientation in web based systems which is powerful learning medium for distance and open education. The Needleman-Wunsch algorithm is used to measure disorientation in a more precise manner. The process combines theoretical and applied knowledge from two previously distinct research areas, disorientation and string-matching. String-matching algorithms provide a more convenient disorientation measurement than other techniques, in that they examine the similarity between an optimal path and learners’ navigation paths. The algorithm particularly takes into account the contextual similarity between partly relevant web-pages in a user’s navigation path and pages in an optimal path. This study focuses on the reasons and the required steps to use this algorithm for disorientation measurement. Examples of actual student activities and learning environment data are provided to illustrate the process
Investigation of Middle School Students’ Written Argumentation Skills about Geometric Objects and Volume Measurement
Çalışma sonuçları, öğrencilerin argümantasyon becerilerinin düşük olduğunu, argümantasyon becerileri ile akademik başarıları ve tartışmaya yönelik eğilimleri arasında anlamlı bir ilişki olmadığını ortaya koymuşturArgumentation is a process that individuals make claims based on some concrete data and use scientific evidence to justify or refute these claims. This study was carried out to investigate middle school students’ written argumentation skills related to the subject; “Geometric Objects and Volume Measurement” and to examine relationship between students’ argumentation skills and academic achievement and argumentativeness. 47 eight grade students at a state school in Ankara participated in this study. Descriptive statics such as frequencies and percentages was used to analyze students’ argumentation skills determined through Toulmin Argument Pattern and Erduran, Simon ve Osborne’s argumentation level. Additionally, correlation analysis was used to analyze if there is a relationship between argumentation skills and academic achievement and between argumentation skills and argumentativeness. The result of this study showed that argumentation skills of the students were low and there was no significant correlation between argumentation skills and academic achievement and argumentation skills and argumentativenes
