Numerical experiments on short-term meteorological effects on solar variability
A set of numerical experiments was conducted to test the short-range sensitivity of a large atmospheric general circulation model to changes in solar constant and ozone amount. On the basis of the results of 12-day sets of integrations with very large variations in these parameters, it is concluded that realistic variations would produce insignificant meteorological effects. Any causal relationships between solar variability and weather, for time scales of two weeks or less, rely upon changes in parameters other than solar constant or ozone amounts, or upon mechanisms not yet incorporated in the model
Frontostriatal Maturation Predicts Cognitive Control Failure to Appetitive Cues in Adolescents
Adolescent risk-taking is a public health issue that increases the odds of poor lifetime outcomes. One factor thought to influence adolescents' propensity for risk-taking is an enhanced sensitivity to appetitive cues, relative to an immature capacity to exert sufficient cognitive control. We tested this hypothesis by characterizing interactions among ventral striatal, dorsal striatal, and prefrontal cortical regions with varying appetitive load using fMRI scanning. Child, teen, and adult participants performed a go/no-go task with appetitive (happy faces) and neutral cues (calm faces). Impulse control to neutral cues showed linear improvement with age, whereas teens showed a nonlinear reduction in impulse control to appetitive cues. This performance decrement in teens was paralleled by enhanced activity in the ventral striatum. Prefrontal cortical recruitment correlated with overall accuracy and showed a linear response with age for no-go versus go trials. Connectivity analyses identified a ventral frontostriatal circuit including the inferior frontal gyrus and dorsal striatum during no-go versus go trials. Examining recruitment developmentally showed that teens had greater between-subject ventral-dorsal striatal coactivation relative to children and adults for happy no-go versus go trials. These findings implicate exaggerated ventral striatal representation of appetitive cues in adolescents relative to an intermediary cognitive control response. Connectivity and coactivity data suggest these systems communicate at the level of the dorsal striatum differentially across development. Biased responding in this system is one possible mechanism underlying heightened risk-taking during adolescence
Spatial Modelling of Within-Field Weed Populations - a Review
Concerns around herbicide resistance, human risk, and the environmental impacts of current weed control strategies have led to an increasing demand for alternative weed management methods. Many new weed management strategies are under development; however, the poor availability of accurate weed maps, and a lack of confidence in the outcomes of alternative weed management strategies, has hindered their adoption. Developments in field sampling and processing, combined with spatial modelling, can support the implementation and assessment of new and more integrated weed management strategies. Our review focuses on the biological and mathematical aspects of assembling within-field weed models. We describe both static and spatio-temporal models of within-field weed distributions (including both cellular automata (CA) and non-CA models), discussing issues surrounding the spatial processes of weed dispersal and competition and the environmental and anthropogenic processes that affect weed spatial and spatio-temporal distributions. We also examine issues surrounding model uncertainty. By reviewing the current state-of-the-art in both static and temporally dynamic weed spatial modelling we highlight some of the strengths and weaknesses of current techniques, together with current and emerging areas of interest for the application of spatial models, including targeted weed treatments, economic analysis, herbicide resistance and integrated weed management, the dispersal of biocontrol agents, and invasive weed species
On the Distribution of Haloes, Galaxies and Mass

semi-analytic models of galaxy formation shows similar stochastic behavior. We

The difference that tenure makes
This paper argues that housing tenures cannot be reduced to either production relations or consumption relations. Instead, they need to be understood as modes of housing distribution, and as having complex and dynamic relations with social classes. Building on a critique of both the productionist and the consumptionist literature, as well as of formalist accounts of the relations between tenure and class, the paper attempts to lay the foundations for a new theory of housing tenure. In order to do this, a new theory of class is articulated, which is then used to throw new light on the nature of class-tenure relations
The Large-scale and Small-scale Clustering of Lyman-Break Galaxies at 3.5 < z< 5.5 from the GOODS survey
We report on the angular correlation function of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs)
at z~4 and 5 from deep samples obtained from the Great Observatories Deep
Origins Survey (GOODS). Similar to LBGs at z~3, the shape of w(theta) of the
GOODS LBGs is well approximated by a power-law with slope beta~0.6 at angular
separation theta > 10 arcsec. The clustering strength of z~4, 5 LBGs also
depends on the rest-frame UV luminosity, with brighter galaxies more strongly
clustered than fainter ones, implying a general correlation between halos' mass
and LBGs' star-formation rate. At smaller separations, w(theta) of deep samples
significantly exceeds the extrapolation of the large-scale power-law fit,
implying enhanced spatial clustering at scales r < 1 Mpc. We also find that
bright LBGs statistically have more faint companions on scales theta < 20
arcsec than fainter ones, showing that the enhanced small-scale clustering is
very likely due to sub-structure, namely the fact that massive halos can host
multiple galaxies. A simple model for the halo occupation distribution and the
CDM halo mass function reproduce well the observed w(theta). The scaling
relationship of the clustering strength with volume density and with redshift
is quantitatively consistent with that of CDM halos. A comparison of the
clustering strength of three samples of equal luminosity limit at z ~ 3, 4 and
5 shows that the LBGs at z~5 are hosted in halos about one order of magnitude
less massive than those in the lower redshift bins, suggesting that

Mister Mary Somerville: Husband and Secretary
Mary Somervilleâs life as a mathematician and savant in nineteenth-century Great Britain was heavily influenced by her gender; as a woman, her access to the ideas and resources developed and circulated in universities and scientific societies was highly restricted. However, her engagement with learned institutions was by no means nonexistent, and although she was 90 before being elected a full member of any society (SocietĂ Geografica Italiana, 1870), Somerville (Figure 1) nevertheless benefited from the resources and social networks cultivated by such institutions from as early as 1812. A key intermediary between Somerville and these societies was her husband, Dr. William Somerville, whose mediation was vital to her access to knowledge and her subsequent career as a scientific author. In this paper we will consider how spousal cooperation enabled the overcoming of gendered barriers to scientific institutions in the nineteenth century
