JWST's TEMPLATES for Star Formation: The First Resolved Gas-Phase Metallicity Maps of Dust-Obscured Star-Forming Galaxies at 4
We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for
dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 4, from the JWST
TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field
unit spectroscopy of the H and [NII] emission lines. Empirically
derived literature optical line calibrations are used to determine that the
sources are highly metal rich, with both appearing to display regions of
supersolar metallicity, particularly in SPT2147-50. While we cannot rule out
shocks or AGN in these regions, we suggest that the two systems have already
undergone significant enrichment as a result of their extremely high
star-formation rates. Utilising ALMA rest-frame 380m continuum and
[CI](P-P) line maps we compare metallicity and gas-to-dust
ratio variations in the two galaxies, finding the two to be anticorrelated on
highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies of
0 galaxies. The data are indicative of the enormous potential of
JWST to probe the enrichment of the interstellar medium on kpc scales in
extremely dust-obscured systems at 4 and beyond.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Ap
JWST's TEMPLATES for Star Formation: The First Resolved Gas-phase Metallicity Maps of Dust-obscured Star-forming Galaxies at z ∼ 4
We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the Hα and [N ii] emission lines. Empirical optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are globally enriched to near-solar levels. While one source shows elevated [N ii]/Hα ratios and broad Hα emission consistent with the presence of an active galactic nucleus in a ≳1 kpc region, we argue that both systems have already undergone significant metal enrichment as a result of their extremely high star formation rates. Utilizing Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array rest-frame 380 μm continuum and [Ci](3P2–3P1) line maps we compare the spatial variation of the metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio in the two galaxies, finding the two properties to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies of z ∼ 0 galaxies. The data are indicative of the enormous potential of JWST to probe the enrichment of the interstellar medium on ∼kpc scales in extremely dust-obscured systems at z ∼ 4 and beyond
Macroeconomic policy change: Ireland in comparative perspective
This paper sets out to develop an improved framework for examining critical junctures. This a priori framework is a significant improvement over existing critical juncture frameworks that lack any predictive element. It is an advance for historical institutionalism in particular, and political science in general. After the new framework is set out in detail here, it is tested. The framework is used to examine a number of potential critical junctures in macroeconomic policy, drawn from Ireland, Sweden, Britain, and America in the latter half of the twentieth century
The ALMA-CRISTAL survey: Widespread dust-obscured star formation in typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6
We present the morphological parameters and global properties of
dust-obscured star formation in typical star-forming galaxies at z=4-6. Among
26 galaxies composed of 20 galaxies observed by the Cycle-8 ALMA Large Program,
CRISTAL, and six galaxies from archival data, we have individually detected
rest-frame 158m dust continuum emission from 19 galaxies, nine of which
are reported for the first time. The derived far-infrared luminosities are in
the range 10.9-12.4, an order of magnitude
lower than previously detected massive dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). The
average relationship between the fraction of dust-obscured star formation
() and the stellar mass is consistent with previous results at
z=4-6 in a mass range of 9.5-11.0 and show
potential evolution from z=6-9. The individual exhibits a
significant diversity, and it shows a correlation with the spatial offset
between the dust and the UV continuum, suggesting the inhomogeneous dust
reddening may cause the source-to-source scatter in . The
effective radii of the dust emission are on average 1.5 kpc and are
times more extended than the rest-frame UV. The infrared surface
densities of these galaxies () are one order of magnitude
lower than those of DSFGs that host compact central starbursts. On the basis of
the comparable contribution of dust-obscured and dust-unobscured star formation
along with their similar spatial extent, we suggest that typical star-forming
galaxies at z=4-6 form stars throughout the entirety of their disks
Echoes of time. The mobility of Brazilian researchers and students in Portugal
We present an exploratory study that investigated biographical stories of
Brazilians who choose to continue their education or develop research in Portugal.
We sought to find in their experiences explanatory links connecting the
motivations and processes that bring them to Portugal, as well as the expectations
and projects that they hold for the future, which may include, or not, this country.
We take into account, particularly, the way this narrative carries senses of identity
arising from the forms of intercultural and political relationship between Portugal
and Brazil, as well as implicit forms of cooperation and representations about the
places chosen for the development of scientific and academic careers. Our research
draws on information collected through a survey based on questionnaires and
interviews with Brazilian students and scholarship holders in Portugal.(undefined
