    JWST's TEMPLATES for Star Formation: The First Resolved Gas-Phase Metallicity Maps of Dust-Obscured Star-Forming Galaxies at zz ∼\sim 4

    We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at zz ∼\sim 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the Hα\alpha and [NII] emission lines. Empirically derived literature optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are highly metal rich, with both appearing to display regions of supersolar metallicity, particularly in SPT2147-50. While we cannot rule out shocks or AGN in these regions, we suggest that the two systems have already undergone significant enrichment as a result of their extremely high star-formation rates. Utilising ALMA rest-frame 380μ\mum continuum and [CI](3^3P2_2-3^3P1_1) line maps we compare metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio variations in the two galaxies, finding the two to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies of zz ∼\sim 0 galaxies. While one source shows elevated [N ii]/Hα ratios and broad Hα emission consistent with the presence of an active galactic nucleus in a ≳1 kpc region, we argue that both systems have already undergone significant metal enrichment as a result of their extremely high star formation rates.     Fish assemblage of a Pampean shallow lake, a story of instability

    The aim of this study was to analyze the temporal long term variability of fish assemblage in Chascomús Lake. Data acquisition was based on documented historical research fishing records and experimental fishing program performed from 1999 to 2013. Fish assemblage composition showed a strong temporal variability. Planktivorous species such as Platanichthys platana, Odontesthes bonariensis and Parapimelodus valenciennis accounted for the 70 to 80% of relative abundance becoming alternatively dominant. The iliophagous Cyphocharax voga, the forth dominant species, shared with P. valenciennis the pattern of change in their relative abundance along time. O. bonariensis and P. platana showed high fluctuations in their representation from dominant to almost disappearance during the considered period. Cluster analysis allowed the identification of four different groups of fish assemblage configuration. Two of them grouped the data from historical studies meanwhile the other encompasses the samples taken between 1999-2012, being the discriminant species the mentioned above. Water level, critical temperatures and man basin modifications are discussed as main drivers of species relative abundance shifts. The study highlights the importance to build a long-term assessments to understand how fish assemblage modifications are linked to the typical pampean floods and drought cycles coupled with unfavorable thermal conditions and water management impacts.Fil: Colautti, Dario César.     Context. Deep spectroscopic surveys with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed that some of the brightest infrared sources in the sky correspond to concentrations of dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFG) at high redshift. Among these, the SPT2349-56 protocluster system at z = 4.304 is amongst the most extreme examples due to its high source density and integrated star formation rate. Aims. We conducted a deep Lyman-α\alpha line emission survey around SPT2349-56 using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) at Very Large Telescope (VLT) in order to characterize this uniquely dense environment. Methods. Taking advantage of the deep three-dimensional nature of this survey, we performed a sensitive search for Lyman-α\alpha emitters (LAEs) toward the core and northern extension of the protocluster, which correspond to the brightest infrared regions in this field. Using a smoothed narrowband image extracted from the MUSE datacube around the protocluster redshift, we searched for possible extended structures. Results. We identify only three LAEs at z = 4.3 in this field, in concordance with expectations for blank-fields, and an extended Lyman-α\alpha structure spatially associated with core of the protocluster. All the previously-identified DSFGs in this field are undetected in Lyman-α\alpha emission, consistent with the conspicuous dust obscuration in these systems. We find an extended Lyman-α\alpha structure, about 60×6060 \times 60 kpc2^{2} in size, and located 56 kpc west of the protocluster core. Three DSFGs coincide spatially with the location of this structure. We conclude that either the three co-spatial DSFGs or the protocluster core itself are feeding ionizing photons to the Lyman-α\alpha structure

    TEMPLATES: Characterization of a Merger in the Dusty Lensing SPT0418–47 System

    We present JWST and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) imaging for the lensing system SPT0418−47, which includes a strongly lensed, dusty, star-forming galaxy at redshift z = 4.225 and an associated multiply imaged companion. The JWST NIRCam and MIRI imaging observations presented in this paper were acquired as part of the Early Release Science program Targeting Extremely Magnified Panchromatic Lensed Arcs and Their Extended Star formation (TEMPLATES). This data set provides robust mutiwavelength detections of stellar light in both the main (SPT0418A) and companion (SPT0418B) galaxies, while the ALMA detection of [C ii] emission confirms that SPT0418B lies at the same redshift as SPT0418A. We infer that the projected physical separation of the two galaxies is 4.42 ± 0.05 kpc. We derive total magnifications of μ = 29 ± 1 and μ = 4.1 ± 0.7 for SPT0418A and SPT0418B, respectively. We use both prospector and cigale to derive stellar masses. We find that SPT0418A has a stellar mass of M*=3.4−0.6+1.1×1010M⊙ from prospector or M * = 1.5 ± 0.3 × 1010 M ⊙ from cigale. The stellar mass ratio of SPT0418A and SPT0418B is roughly between 4 and 7 ( 4.2−1.6+1.9 for prospector and 7.5 ± 3.7 for cigale). We see evidence of extended structure associated with SPT0418A that is suggestive of a tidal feature. These features, along with the close projected proximity, imply that the system is interacting. Interestingly, the star formation rates and stellar masses of both galaxies are consistent with the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at this epoch, indicating that this ongoing interaction has not noticeably elevated the star formation levels
