Detection of irrigation inhomogeneities in an olive grove using the NDRE vegetation index obtained from UAV images

    Get PDF
We have developed a simple photogrammetric method to identify heterogeneous areas of irrigated olive groves and vineyard crops using a commercial multispectral camera mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). By comparing NDVI, GNDVI, SAVI, and NDRE vegetation indices, we find that the latter shows irrigation irregularities in an olive grove not discernible with the other indices. This may render the NDRE as particularly useful to identify growth inhomogeneities in crops. Given the fact that few satellite detectors are sensible in the red-edge (RE) band and none with the spatial resolution offered by UAVs, this finding has the potential of turning UAVs into a local farmer’s favourite aid tool.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Complex Networks of Social Support: Exploring the Roles of Parents, Families, and Mentors in the Lives of Young Adult Gay and Bisexual Men.

Various structural, interactional, and functional characteristics of young adult (18-29 year-old) gay and bisexual men’s (YGBM) social support networks remain unexamined in the public health literature. Without clearer understanding of the parent, family, and mentor roles in the lives of YGBM, the linkages between social support and health status also remain unclear. These linkages may be critical to understand given the health disparities impacting YGBM. In the first study, I explored the roles of perceived maternal and paternal social support in YGBM’s substance use behaviors. I examined the associations between parental supports and substance use and tested a stress-buffering hypothesis examining if supports moderated the associations between sexuality-based victimization and substance use. Results indicated that neither maternal nor paternal supports moderated these associations. However, in main effects models, maternal and paternal supports were associated with abstinence from cigarette smoking and marijuana use, respectively. In the second study, I explored how YGBM defined their families, and examined whether perceived familial social support and familial social undermining were associated with psychological distress among YGBM within and across different family types. Results indicated that support and undermining were negatively and positively associated, respectively, with depression and anxiety. These associations varied with respect to the type of family that YGBM defined, suggesting that family network content plays a role in shaping perceptions of support and undermining. In the third study, based on qualitative interviews with providers, I explored the role of mentors in the lives of young Black and Latino men who have sex with men (YBLMSM). Results indicated several issues, including homophobia and lack of visibility, influencing development of mentoring relationships by creating opportunities and barriers for social connections. Mentors also served multiples purposes in the lives of YBLMSM, acting as role models and contributing to the psychological well-being and the social and economic advancement of YBLMSM. My findings underscore the need to consider the role of mothers and fathers, families of origin and chosen families, and mentors in the health and well-being of YBLMSM. Overall, I also demonstrate that YBLMSM are embedded in rich but also complex networks of social support.PhDHealth Behavior and Health EducationUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Video Tester -- A multiple-metric framework for video quality assessment over IP networks

This paper presents an extensible and reusable framework which addresses the problem of video quality assessment over IP networks. The proposed tool (referred to as Video-Tester) supports raw uncompressed video encoding and decoding. It also includes different video over IP transmission methods (i.e.: RTP over UDP unicast and multicast, as well as RTP over TCP). In addition, it is furnished with a rich set of offline analysis capabilities. Video-Tester analysis includes QoS and bitstream parameters estimation (i.e.: bandwidth, packet inter-arrival time, jitter and loss rate, as well as GOP size and I-frame loss rate). Our design facilitates the integration of virtually any existing video quality metric thanks to the adopted Python-based modular approach. Video-Tester currently provides PSNR, SSIM, ITU-T G.1070 video quality metric, DIV and PSNR-based MOS estimations. In order to promote its use and extension, Video-Tester is open and publicly available.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. For the Google Code project, see http://video-tester.googlecode.com

Single application of the unified protocol in university students of the Balearic Islands: a pilot study

    Get PDF
Despite the proven evidence of the Unified Protocol (UP) for the transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders (ED), there is no study using the UP to treat ED in a Spanish clinical sample of university students. The objective of this study has been to determine the clinical utility of UP in this population. The project consisted of a pilot study of an open treatment outcome study without a control group, carried out in the psychological care service of the University of the Balearic Islands. UP was applied in individual face to face format to 17 participants with a diagnosis of ED. After the intervention, only two participants maintained their diagnosis. Except for one participant, all had a statistically significant reduction in depressive and anxious symptoms, with moderate-large effect sizes (Cohen's r = 0.48-0.62). These results are encouraging and are consistent with the evidence to date. We believe that UP could be a clinically useful treatment alternative for university psychological services
