Hide and seek on complex networks
Signaling pathways and networks determine the ability to communicate in
systems ranging from living cells to human society. We investigate how the
network structure constrains communication in social-, man-made and biological
networks. We find that human networks of governance and collaboration are
predictable on teat-a-teat level, reflecting well defined pathways, but
globally inefficient. In contrast, the Internet tends to have better overall
communication abilities, more alternative pathways, and is therefore more
robust. Between these extremes the molecular network of Saccharomyces cerevisea
is more similar to the simpler social systems, whereas the pattern of
interactions in the more complex Drosophilia melanogaster, resembles the robust

Ab initio study of reflectance anisotropy spectra of a sub-monolayer oxidized Si(100) surface
The effects of oxygen adsorption on the reflectance anisotropy spectrum (RAS)
of reconstructed Si(100):O surfaces at sub-monolayer coverage (first stages of
oxidation) have been studied by an ab initio DFT-LDA scheme within a
plane-wave, norm-conserving pseudopotential approach. Dangling bonds and the
main features of the characteristic RAS of the clean Si(100) surface are mostly
preserved after oxidation of 50% of the surface dimers, with some visible
changes: a small red shift of the first peak, and the appearance of a distinct
spectral structure at about 1.5 eV. The electronic transitions involved in the
latter have been analyzed through state-by-state and layer-by-layer
decompositions of the RAS. We suggest that new interplay between present
theoretical results and reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy experiments could
lead to further clarification of structural and kinetic details of the Si(100)

Bound excitons in time-dependent density-functional-theory: optical and energy-loss spectra
A robust and efficient frequency dependent and non-local exchange-correlation
is derived by imposing time-dependent density-functional
theory (TDDFT) to reproduce the many-body diagrammatic expansion of the
Bethe-Salpeter polarization function. As an illustration, we compute the
optical spectra of LiF, \sio and diamond and the finite momentum transfer
energy-loss spectrum of LiF. The TDDFT results reproduce extremely well the
excitonic effects embodied in the Bethe-Salpeter approach, both for strongly
bound and resonant excitons. We provide a working expression for that

On the multiplicity of ALMA Compact Array counterparts of far-infrared bright quasars
We present ALMA Atacama Compact Array (ACA) 870 micron continuum maps of 28
infrared-bright SDSS quasars with Herschel/SPIRE detections at redshifts 2-4,
the largest such sample ever observed with ALMA. The ACA detections are centred
on the SDSS coordinates to within 1 arcsec for about 80 per cent of the sample.
Larger offsets indicate that the far-infrared (FIR) emission detected by
Herschel might come from a companion source. The majority of the objects (about
70 per cent) have unique ACA counterparts within the SPIRE beam down to 3-4
arcsec resolution. Only 30 per cent of the sample shows clear evidence for
multiple sources with secondary counterparts contributing to the total 870
micron flux within the SPIRE beam to at least 25 per cent. We discuss the
limitations of the data based on simulated pairs of point-like sources at the
resolution of the ACA and present an extensive comparison of our findings with
recent works on the multiplicities of sub-millimetre galaxies. We conclude
that, despite the coarse resolution of the ACA, our data support the idea that,
for a large fraction of FIR-bright quasars, the sub-mm emission comes from
single sources. Our results suggest that, on average, optically bright quasars
with strong FIR emission are not triggered by early-stage mergers but are,
instead, together with their associated star formation rates, the outcome of
either late-stage mergers or secular processes.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
Preferential attachment in the protein network evolution
The Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein-protein interaction map, as well as many
natural and man-made networks, shares the scale-free topology. The preferential
attachment model was suggested as a generic network evolution model that yields
this universal topology. However, it is not clear that the model assumptions
hold for the protein interaction network. Using a cross genome comparison we
show that (a) the older a protein, the better connected it is, and (b) The
number of interactions a protein gains during its evolution is proportional to
its connectivity. Therefore, preferential attachment governs the protein
network evolution. The evolutionary mechanism leading to such preference and

Reflectivity Anisotropy Spectra of Cu- and Ag- (110) surfaces from {\it ab initio} theory
We are able to disentagle the effects of the intraband and interband parts of
the bulk dielectric function on the bare dielectric anisotropy of the surface.
We show how the position, sign and amplitude of the structures observed in such
spectra depend on the above quantities. The lineshape of all the calculated
structures agree very well with the ones observed experimentally for samples
treated by suitable surface cleaning. In particular, we reproduce the observed
single peak structure of Ag at high energy, found to represent a state of the
clean surface different from the one giving the originally observed double peak

Analysis of telephone network traffic based on a complex user network
The traffic in telephone networks is analyzed in this paper. Unlike the
classical traffic analysis where call blockings are due to the limited channel
capacity, we consider here a more realistic cause for call blockings which is
due to the way in which users are networked in a real-life human society.
Furthermore, two kinds of user network, namely, the fully-connected user
network and the scale-free network, are employed to model the way in which
telephone users are connected. We show that the blocking probability is
generally higher in the case of the scale-free user network, and that the
carried traffic intensity is practically limited not only by the network

Presence of asthma risk factors and environmental exposures related to upper respiratory infection-triggered wheezing in middle school-age children.
Viral respiratory infections and exposure to environmental constituents such as tobacco smoke are known or suspected to trigger wheezing/asthma exacerbations in children. However, few population-based data exist that examine the relationship between wheezing triggered by viral respiratory infections and environmental exposures. In this investigation we used population-based data to evaluate differences in exposures between symptomatic middle school-age children who did and did not report wheezing triggered by viral respiratory infections. As part of the North Carolina School Asthma Survey (NCSAS), a 66-question data instrument was used to collect information from children enrolled in North Carolina public middle schools during the 1999-2000 school year. Associations between exposures and upper respiratory infection-triggered wheezing (URI-TW) among symptomatic children were examined using adjusted prevalence odds ratios (PORs). Video methods developed for the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood were used to assess wheezing. Among the 33,534 NCSAS symptomatic participants, positive associations were observed between most exposures and URI-TW. Reported presence of all allergy variables (PORs ranging from 2.11 to 2.45) was more strongly associated with URI-TW than either smoking or other exposures. Presence of URI-TW was higher at increasing levels of tobacco smoke exposure, but no apparent dose-response effect was observed for other indoor air pollutants. URI-TW in middle school children is most associated with reported allergen sensitivity, relative to other asthma risk factors and environmental exposures. Data from this investigation may be useful in developing assessment, screening, and targeting strategies to improve asthma and wheezing management in children
Self Organized Scale-Free Networks from Merging and Regeneration
We consider the self organizing process of merging and regeneration of
vertices in complex networks and demonstrate that a scale-free degree
distribution emerges in a steady state of such a dynamics. The merging of
neighbor vertices in a network may be viewed as an optimization of efficiency
by minimizing redundancy. It is also a mechanism to shorten the distance and
thus decrease signaling times between vertices in a complex network. Thus the
merging process will in particular be relevant for networks where these issues
related to global signaling are of concern
Supraglacial rivers on the northwest Greenland Ice Sheet, Devon Ice Cap, and Barnes Ice Cap mapped using Sentinel-2 imagery
Supraglacial rivers set efficacy and time lags by which surface meltwater is routed to the englacial, subglacial, and proglacial portions of ice masses. However, these hydrologic features remain poorly studied mainly because they are too narrow (typically <30 m) to be reliably delineated in conventional moderate-resolution satellite images (e.g., 30 m Landsat-8 imagery). This study demonstrates the utility of 10 m Sentinel-2 Multi-Spectral Instrument images to map supraglacial rivers on the northwest Greenland Ice Sheet, Devon Ice Cap, and Barnes Ice Cap, covering a total area of ∼10,000 km2. Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 both capture overall supraglacial drainage patterns, but Sentinel-2 images are superior to Landsat-8 images for delineating narrow and continuous supraglacial rivers. Sentinel-2 mapping across the three study areas reveals a variety of supraglacial drainage patterns. In northwest Greenland near Inglefield Land, subparallel supraglacial rivers up to 55 km long drain meltwater directly off the ice sheet onto the proglacial zone. On the Devon and the Barnes ice caps, shorter supraglacial rivers (up to 15–30 km long) are commonly interrupted by moulins, which drain internally drained catchments on the ice surface to subglacial systems. We conclude that Sentinel-2 offers strong potential for investigating supraglacial meltwater drainage patterns and improving our understanding of the hydrological conditions of ice masses globally
