Posterior mediastinal extramedullary hematopoiesis secondary to hypoxia
Two mediastinal masses were incidentally detected at high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of a 72 year-old male patient, former smoker, affected by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with worsening dyspnea and 2-year medical history of polycythemia secondary to hypoxia. Integration with a multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scan after administration of intravenous injection contrast medium showed slightly inhomogeneous increase of enhancement of masses, suggesting in the first case potential malignancy. Diagnosis of extramedullary hematopoiesis was achieved by fine needle aspiration citology (FNAC). Extramedullary hematopoiesis must be considered in differential diagnosis in patients with medical history of polycythemia and severe hypoxia
Service customization supporting an adaptive information system
This work approaches the problem of discovering atomic web services that will realize complex business processes in an adaptive information system. It is proposed a model for semantic description of web services and user profile and the design of a semantic recommender engine based on this model. The recommender engine performs, during the web service discovery phase, a "similarity evaluation" step in which it can be possible to estimate the similarity between what the service offers and what the user prefers. A semantic algorithm, that measures distance between concepts in an ontology, is used to rank the results of the semantic matching between the user profile and a list of web services, suggesting to the user the most suitable services
On the automation of high level synthesis of convolutional neural networks
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are a particular type of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) inspired by cells in the primary visual cortex of animals, and represent the state of the art in image recognition and classification. Nowadays, such supervised learning technique is very popular in Big Data analytics. In this context, due to the huge amount of data to be processed, it is crucial to find techniques to speed up the computation. In particular, the dataflow pattern of CNN algorithm results to be suitable for hardware acceleration. This paper proposes a framework to automatically generate a hardware implementation of CNNs on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), based on the High Level Synthesis (HLS) of configurable offline-trained networks
Errors in the Radiological Evaluation of the Alimentary Tract: Part II
: Plain abdominal radiography and computed tomographic (CT) enteroclysis are 2 essential radiological investigations in the study of gastrointestinal tract. Errors in patient preparation, execution, and interpretation may lead to severe consequences in the diagnosis and thus in patient outcome. Abdominal radiography is one of the most frequently requested radiographic examinations, and has an established role in the assessment of the acute abdomen. CT enteroclysis has revolutionized the assessment of small-bowel pathology, especially in patients with inflammatory bowel. The purpose of this article is to describe the pitfalls in the execution and interpretation of plain abdominal film and CT enteroclysis
