    Nuevas metodologías docentes para la enseñanza de estructuras aeronáuticas.

    La asignatura “Estructuras Aeronáuticas” está orientada a completar los conocimientos del análisis de estructuras del futuro ingeniero aeronáutico. La organización y programación de la asignatura está pensada para transmitir los conocimientos necesarios para el cálculo de estructuras laminares mediante métodos clásicos y modernos, como el basado en el Análisis con Elementos Finitos (AEF), de manera que el alumno posea una perspectiva amplia de la problemática asociada al diseño de estructuras laminares como las que integran una aeronave. Ello se lleva a cabo mediante clases teóricas, clases de problemas, clases prácticas de estructuras por ordenador y trabajos prácticos. En este trabajo se presentan nuevas metodologías docentes implementadas e introducidas en el esquema docente de dicha asignatura con objeto de satisfacer las líneas prioritarias del Plan Propio de la Universidad de Sevilla sobre metodologías docentes. De esta forma se llevan a cabo diferentes frentes de actuación: estudio y experimentación de nuevas metodologías didácticas como la enseñanza virtual, usando plataformas virtuales tipo WebCT, la elaboración de clases por transparencias PowerPoint y animaciones a partir de material específico, y la promoción del trabajo en equipo mediante la realización de un proyecto en grupo de AEF de un ala de una aeronave de recreo. El modelado mediante elementos finitos se realizará empleando el software comercial NASTRAN ® y PATRAN ® , de extensa aplicación en el sector aeronáutico

    La asignatura “Estructuras Metálicas” está orientada a completar los conocimientos del análisis de estructuras del futuro ingeniero industrial con su aplicación práctica al diseño de estructuras metálicas. La organización y programación de la asignatura está pensada para transmitir los conocimientos necesarios para el cálculo de elementos estructurales simples, de manera que el alumno posea una perspectiva amplia de la problemática asociada al diseño de estructuras metálicas complejas. Ello se lleva a cabo mediante clases teóricas, clases de problemas, clases prácticas de estructuras por ordenador, prácticas de laboratorio, y trabajos prácticos. Este trabajo presenta nuevas metodologías docentes, de acuerdo con las líneas prioritarias del Plan Propio de la Universidad de Sevilla, para mejorar los diferentes frentes de docencia que la asignatura posee. Para ello se profundiza en el estudio y experimentación de nuevas metodologías didácticas como la enseñanza virtual, usando plataformas virtuales tipo WebCT, la elaboración de clases por transparencias PowerPoint y animaciones numéricas realizadas mediante elementos finitos, todo ello basadas en la normativa vigente actual y bibliografía referente actualizada. Además se fomenta el trabajo en equipo mediante la realización de prácticas de campo y un proyecto en grupo, y se desarrollan nuevas prácticas de laboratorio y actividades de manera que el alumno contemple la visión práctica de los conocimientos adquiridos

    A methodology to measure sight-hidden dips'parameters.

    Highway design standards specify several requirements on available sight distance. Usually, compliance with these standards is ensured during the design phase of a new road. This is made through geometric calculations that take into account the terrain and the road. In this paper, a procedure for measuring distances in an existing road from georeferenced photographs is proposed. In addition, an estimation of the error committed when using this procedure is made. Distances measured using this procedure arecompared with the ones measured using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Distances error is within the error estimation and is low enough for using it in traffic safety studies. In addition, the procedure is applied to measure several parameters of a sight-hidden dip. This procedure does not need a terrain model to measure these parameters. This is an advantage compared with other existing procedures for estimating the parameters of sight-hidden dips

    Long term orientation: A comparative study amongst engineer and tourism students

    Objective: To investigate the differences amongst the LTO (Long Term Orientation) profile of graduate students in two academic programs. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 66 students participated in the study. The items of each construct corresponded to the two dimensions established by the original LTO scale. The validity test for the measurement scale was based first on exploratory and then on confirmatory factor analysis. The internal reliability consistency of the multi-item scales was assessed with Cronbach’s α. Independent sample t-tests were applied to verify the hypothesis. Results: The eight-item LTO scale performed reasonably well, lending support for its internal validity for the sample. The engineering students had higher levels for the planning dimension, still there were no significant differences in the estimates (t=-.391, p=.697), and students of the tourism program rated higher for the tradition dimension compared to the engineering students (t=3.557, p=.001). Limitations/implications: The study focus only in one personality trait. Education providers can draw upon these findings a better understanding of their students, becoming relevant for the curriculum. Findings/Conclusions: Students of the tourism academic program score higher in the tradition dimension of the LTO profile. On the contrary, there was no difference regarding the planning factor of the LTO profile. Therefore, LTO scale might be useful for understanding students’ decisions and personal orientations, allowing for academic programs to better focus their curriculum.Objective: To investigate differences amongst the LTO (Long Term Orientation) profile of graduate students of two academic programs: tourism and engineer.     Experimental and theoretical study of α–Eu2(MoO4)3 under compression

    The compression process in the α-phase of europium trimolybdate was revised employing several experimental techniques. X-ray diffraction (using synchrotron and laboratory radiation sources), Raman scattering and photoluminescence experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 21 GPa. In addition, the crystal structure and Raman mode frequencies have been studied by means of first-principles density functional based methods. Results suggest that the compression process of α-Eu2(MoO4)3 can be described by three stages. Below 8 GPa, the α-phase suffers an isotropic contraction of the crystal structure. Between 8 and 12 GPa, the compound undergoes an anisotropic compression due to distortion and rotation of the MoO4 tetrahedra. At pressures above 12 GPa, the amorphization process starts without any previous occurrence of a crystalline-crystalline phase transition in the whole range of pressure. This behavior clearly differs from the process of compression and amorphization in trimolybdates with β′-phase and tritungstates with α-phase.We thank Diamond Light Source for access to beamline I15 (EE1746) that contributed to the results presented here. It manages four observatories in Tenerife including the high altitude Izaña Atmospheric Observatory. The Izaña Atmospheric Observatory was inaugurated in 1916 and since that date has carried out uninterrupted meteorological and climatological observations, contributing towards a unique 100-year record in 2016. This reports are a summary of the many activities at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center to the broader community.     Allogeneic stem cell transplantation as a curative option in relapse/refractory diffuse large B cell lymphoma: Spanish multicenter GETH/GELTAMO study

    Grupo Español de Trasplante Hematopoyético (GETH) and Grupo Español de Linfoma y Trasplante Autólogo (GELTAMO).We performed a retrospective multicenter study including 140 patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) from March 1995 to November 2018. Our objective was to analyze long term outcomes. Seventy-four percent had received a previous auto-SCT (ASCT) and the median number of lines pre-allo-SCT was 3 (range 1–9). Three year-event free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 38% and 44%, respectively. Non-relapse mortality (NRM) at day 100 was 19%. Cumulative incidence of grade III–IV acute graft versus host disease (GVHD) at day 100 was 16% and moderate/severe chronic GVHD at 3 years 34%. Active disease at allo-SCT (HR 1.95, p = 0.039) (HR 2.19, p = 0.019), HCT-CI ≥ 2 (2.45, p = 0.002) (HR 2.33, p = 0.006) and donor age >37 years (HR 2.75, p = 0.014) (HR 1.98, p = 0.043) were the only independent variables both for PFS and OS, respectively. NRM was significantly modified by HCT-CI ≥ 2 (HR 4.8, p = 0.008), previous ASCT (HR 4.4, p = 0.048) and grade III–IV acute GVHD on day 100 (HR 6.13, p = 0.016). Our data confirmed that allo-SCT is a curative option for patients with R/R DLBCL, displaying adequate results for fit patients with chemosensitive disease receiving an allo-SCT from a young donor

    Rationale and methods of the multicenter randomised trial of a heart failure management programme among geriatric patients (HF-Geriatrics)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Disease management programmes (DMPs) have been shown to reduce hospital readmissions and mortality in adults with heart failure (HF), but their effectiveness in elderly patients or in those with major comorbidity is unknown. The Multicenter Randomised Trial of a Heart Failure Management Programme among Geriatric Patients (HF-Geriatrics) assesses the effectiveness of a DMP in elderly patients with HF and major comorbidity.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>Clinical trial in 700 patients aged ≥ 75 years admitted with a primary diagnosis of HF in the acute care unit of eight geriatric services in Spain. Each patient should meet at least one of the following comorbidty criteria: Charlson index ≥ 3, dependence in ≥ 2 activities of daily living, treatment with ≥ 5 drugs, active treatment for ≥ 3 diseases, recent emergency hospitalization, severe visual or hearing loss, cognitive impairment, Parkinson's disease, diabetes mellitus, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), anaemia, or constitutional syndrome. Half of the patients will be randomly assigned to a 1-year DMP led by a case manager and the other half to usual care. The DMP consists of an educational programme for patients and caregivers on the management of HF, COPD (knowledge of the disease, smoking cessation, immunizations, use of inhaled medication, recognition of exacerbations), diabetes (knowledge of the disease, symptoms of hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia, self-adjustment of insulin, foot care) and depression (knowledge of the disease, diagnosis and treatment). It also includes close monitoring of the symptoms of decompensation and optimisation of treatment compliance. The main outcome variables are quality of life, hospital readmissions, and overall mortality during a 12-month follow-up.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The physiological changes, lower life expectancy, comorbidity and low health literacy associated with aging may influence the effectiveness of DMPs in HF. The HF-Geriatrics study will provide direct evidence on the effect of a DMP in elderly patients with HF and high comorbidty, and will reduce the need to extrapolate the results of clinical trials in adults to elderly patients.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>(ClinicalTrials.gov number, <a href="http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01076465">NCT01076465</a>).</p
