    Strongly-Driven One-Atom Laser and Decoherence Monitoring

    We propose the implementation of a strongly-driven one-atom laser, based on the off-resonant interaction of a three-level atom in Λ\Lambda-configuration with a single cavity mode and three laser fields. We show that the system can be described equivalently by a two-level atom resonantly coupled to the cavity and driven by a strong effective coherent field. The effective dynamics can be solved exactly, including a thermal field bath, allowing an analytical description of field statistics and entanglement properties. We also show the possible generation of Schr\"odinger cat states for the whole atom-field system and for the field alone after atomic measurement. We propose a way to monitor the system decoherence by measuring atomic population. Finally, we confirm the validity of our model through numerical solutions.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures Accepted in Phys. Rev.

    Hyperon production asymmetries in 500 GeV/c pion nucleus interactions

    We present a preliminary study from Fermilab experiment E791 of Lambda^0 / Lambda^0 bar, Xi^- / Xi^+ and Omega^- /Omega^+ production asymmetries from pi^- nucleus interactions at 500 Gev/c. The production asymmetries for these particles are studied as a function of x_F and pt^2. We observed an asymmetry in the target fragmentation region for Lambda^0's larger than that for Xi's, suggesting diquark effects. The asymmetry for Omega's is significatively smaller than for the other two hyperons consistent with the fact that Omega's do not share valence quarks with either the pion or the target particle. In the beam fragmentation region, the asymmetry tends to 0.1 for both Lambda^0's and Xi's. The asymmetries vs pt^2 are approximately constant for the three strange baryons under study.Comment: Typos correcte

    An Experimental Study of Airfoil Icing Characteristics

    A full scale general aviation wing with a NACA 63 sub 2 A415 airfoil section was tested to determine icing characteristics for representative rime and glaze icing conditions. Measurements were made of ice accretion shapes and resultant wing section drag coefficient levels. It was found that the NACA 63 sub 2 A415 wing section was less sensitive to rime and glaze icing encounters for climb conditions

    UNDERSTANDING HOW AFRICAN AMERICAN AND LATINO MALES CHOOSE A MAJOR, AND ITS INFLUENCE ON RETENTION AND PERSISTENCE

    The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the process of selecting a college major for African American and Latino male students and whether these decisions influenced their sense of belonging and development of self-efficacy, as it relates to persistence and retention at a four-year public institution in the northeast region of the United States. Utilizing Harper\u27s (2012) Anti-deficit Achievement Framework, this study used a Narrative Inquiry design to highlight the stories of six African American and Latino male students and their experiences with selecting a major. I collected data/field texts from two individual virtual interviews for this narrative inquiry study. This study utilized Strayhorn\u27s (2012) research on Sense of Belonging and Bandura\u27s (1977) Theory of Self-Efficacy as the theoretical frameworks that helped explain the experiences of men of color with selecting a major. This study revealed that selecting a major influenced the participant\u27s sense of belonging and the development of self-efficacy. Because both sense of belonging and self-efficacy are connected with persistence and retention, the findings of this study indicated that if these students continue to develop strong connections with faculty, staff and peers, as well as continue to do well academically, they will likely persist to the following semester, and ultimately graduate
