The Blackspotted croaker (Protonibea diacanthus) locally known as Ghol was landed in huge quantity at the Jafrabad Fish Landing Centre on 10th December 2018. The total weight of the catch was 10,700 kg with the croakers in the length range of 679 to 1298 mm (Fig.1). The motorized fishing vessel with an overall length of 14 m and powered by 95 hp engine carried the catch harvested from the bag (dol) net

Attitudes Of Adolescent Girls Towards Contraceptive Methods

BackgroundThere has been a growing interest in patterns of contraceptive use among adolescents, due, in particular, to the social relevance attached to pregnancy in this age group. Therefore, the objective of the study was to investigate factors associated with the use of contraceptive methods among female adolescent students.Method┬а A cross-sectional study was conducted, by means of self-applied questionnaires, among 500 adolescent girls ranging from 17 to 19 years of age. Prevalence with respect to the knowledge of contraceptive methods, condom use, and AIDS was calculated. ResultsAmong the 500 students who participated in study only one was sexually active .The factors associated with knowledge lack and misconception are less discussion at home or at school or college level. There were many negative beliefs like impotence after condom use, weakness after sterilization, fear of becoming obese as reasons for choosing different contraceptive methods.ConclusionThese results confirm the there is a need for reproductive health education in school and college as well as robust research to determine the contraceptive needs of adolescents

Reproductive biology of Pharaoh cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis Ehrenberg, 1831 along the Gujarat coast, India

Gujarat is a leading maritime state in the production of marine finfish and cephalopods in India. The cephalopods are one of the major fishery resources along the region having a good domestic and export demand. These resources are exploited majorly by bottom trawls along the region. Sepia pharaonis contributes nearly 20 % to the cephalopod landings of Gujarat. However, the fishery and reproductive biology of the cephalopod, Sepia pharaonis is poorly known from the region. The specimens for biological analysis along with fishing operations and fishing data using a structured questionnaire were collected from the multi-day trawlers based at the Veraval Fishing Harbour for the period of 2017 тАУ 18. The maximum observed length (Dorsal Mantle Length (DML)) among all specimens was 361 mm with a mean DML of 239.52 mm (sample range DML). Sex ratio revealed that the males are dominant over the females (M: F = 1:0.75) in the catch composition. The size at first maturity was observed at 213.1 mm DML, which is lower than the mean size of the fishery. The month-wise significant variations (p < 0.05) were observed in the values of GSI and NSI during the study period and peak values indicate the spawning season of the fishery. The proportion of maturity stages in different months as well as maturity indices indicates perennial spawning season with peak spawning activity during December тАУ March months. The ova diameter studies revealed ovum sizes from 0.99 тАУ 14.30 mm (6.52┬▒3.35). The fecundity varied from 1,358 тАУ 6,005 ova (average = 2,883). The current research study is the maiden attempt along the region and further supports the formulation of management plans for the sustainable exploitation of the resource

Assessing low value crustacean bycatch species using length based bayesian biomass (LBB) method, a tool for data poor fish stock assessment

    Get PDF
The majority of tropical fish stocks lack sufficient data for conventional fish stock assessment, making them data-poor fisheries. The status of stock assessment is even more dismal for the low value fishes or crustaceans landed by the trawlers in a significant quantity. Crustaceans like non-edible small crabs (Charybdis spp) and stomatopods form a significant component of the low-value bycatch landed along the northwest coast. Despite the high ecological importance of these groups and the recent declining trend in catches (2007-19), no attempts so far have been made to evaluate the stock status of these groups from the study region. As reliable time series catch and effort data for the individual species are not available, a recently developed length-based approach, LBB (Length Based Bayesian Biomass) estimation method is adopted for the present study. Two of the evaluated stocks, Charybdis hoplites and Miyakella nepa were found abundant (B/BMSY>1.1), whereas Oratosquillina interrupta (B/BMSY=0.94) was found slightly overfished. The sufficient number of larger individuals were found lacking in all three species (L95th/LтИЮ<<1.0). A higher incidence of juveniles in catches was estimated for C. hoplites and O. interrupta (Lmean/Lopt<<1.0)

Note on a large sized Indian squid landed

Indian squid, Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvauceli (Orbigny, 1835) locally called as Narsingha, forms an important cephalopod resource in Gujarat. The present specimen was collected on 20th January 2017 from the Veraval Fishing Harbour caught by a singleday trawler operating at a depth zone of 40 to 60 m off Gujarat coast. The particular trawler also landed about 20 kg of considerably bigger size squids. U. (P.) duvauceli show differential allometric growth and the asymptotic length for male is higher than females, whereas the female grows faster compared to males

Clinical features and management of posttraumatic subperiosteal hematoma of the orbit

Traumatic subperiosteal hematoma (SpH) usually presents late, after the initial trauma. It is generally seen in young males. Computed tomography is the best mode of imaging and helps to rule out orbital fracture or associated subdural hematoma. We present the clinical features and management of four patients seen at the orbit clinic with SpH. Management is based on time of presentation, visual acuity and any communicating bleed. The prognosis of traumatic SpH is excellent if treated with an individualized patient approach
