    Pattern formation and optimization in army ant raids

    Army ant colonies display complex foraging raid patterns involving thousands of individuals communicating through chemical trails. In this paper we explore, by means of a simple search algorithm, the properties of these trails in order to test the hypothesis that their structure reflects an optimized mechanism for exploring and exploiting food resources. The raid patterns of three army ant species, {em Eciton hamatum}, {em Eciton burchelli} and {em Eciton rapax}, are analysed. The respective diets of these species involve large but rare, small but common, and a combination of large but rare and small but common, food sources. Using a model proposed by Deneubourg and collaborators, we simulate the formation of raid patterns in response to different food distributions. Our results indicate that the empirically observed raid patterns maximise return on investment, that is, the amount of food brought back to the nest per unit of energy expended, for each of the diets. Moreover, the values of the parameters that characterise the three optimal pattern-generating mechanisms are strikingly similar. Therefore the same behavioural rules at the individual level can produce optimal colony-level patterns. The evolutionary implications of these findings are discussed.Postprint (published version

    Se define, en el Eoceno del Prepirineo oriental, entre los ríos Segre y Freser, la Formación Baga y dos miembros de la Formación Ager: calizas con Alveolinas y margas del Clot del Moro. Además, se discute el origen y significación de dos afloramientos de yesos triásicos y otro de calizas conForaminíferos incluidos en la formación Bagi y que habían sido interpretados como olistólitos. Se llega a la conclusión de que el de las calizas con Foraminíferos se trata de un bloque gravitacional subaéreo posteocénico y que los otros dos están relacionados con accidentes tectónicos

    Liquid phase epitaxy and spectroscopic investigation of optically active KYb(WO4)2 thin layers

    In recent years, Yb3+ has attracted much attention as an activating ion because of its small quantum defect for laser emission from 2F5/2 to 2F7/2 at ~1.03 µm, which provides high efficiency and reduced heat generation. A promising material for Yb3+ lasers is KYb(WO4)2 (KYbW) [1]. It can be grown from high-temperature solutions [2]. A suitable substrate material for the growth of single-crystalline layers with thicknesses in the range of the absorption length of ~13 µm at 981 nm is KY(WO4)2 (KYW).\ud We demonstrate the liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) of KYbW layers at start temperatures as low as 520°C from the chloride solvent KCl-NaCl-CsCl. This temperature is favorable in order to decrease the thermal stresses due to the differences in the thermal expansion coefficients of substrate and layer. Moreover, the choice of [010]-oriented KYW substrates bypasses the large difference in the thermal expansion coefficient along the [010] direction. Our spectroscopic investigations show that the fluorescence lifetime of ~250 µs measured in our LPE-grown KYbW layers is dominated by radiative decay and is very similar to that measured in top-seeded-solution-grown bulk samples [2]. Fast energy migration among the Yb3+ ions and energy transfer to small amounts of Tm3+ and Er3+ ions present in the YbCl3 reagent lead to visible upconversion luminescence in the layers under 981-nm excitation.\ud \ud [1] P.     A linear construction for certain Kerdock and Preparata codes

    The Nordstrom-Robinson, Kerdock, and (slightly modified) Pre\- parata codes are shown to be linear over \ZZ_4, the integers mod 4\bmod~4. The Kerdock and Preparata codes are duals over \ZZ_4, and the Nordstrom-Robinson code is self-dual. All these codes are just extended cyclic codes over \ZZ_4. This provides a simple definition for these codes and explains why their Hamming weight distributions are dual to each other. First- and second-order Reed-Muller codes are also linear codes over \ZZ_4, but Hamming codes in general are not, nor is the Golay code.Comment: 5 page

    Neighbour transitivity on codes in Hamming graphs

    We consider a \emph{code} to be a subset of the vertex set of a \emph{Hamming graph}. In this setting a \emph{neighbour} of the code is a vertex which differs in exactly one entry from some codeword. This paper examines codes with the property that some group of automorphisms acts transitively on the \emph{set of neighbours} of the code. We call these codes \emph{neighbour transitive}. We obtain sufficient conditions for a neighbour transitive group to fix the code setwise. Moreover, we construct an infinite family of neighbour transitive codes, with \emph{minimum distance} δ=4\delta=4, where this is not the case. That is to say, knowledge of even the complete set of code neighbours does not determine the code

    Red Queen Coevolution on Fitness Landscapes

    Species do not merely evolve, they also coevolve with other organisms. Coevolution is a major force driving interacting species to continuously evolve ex- ploring their fitness landscapes. Coevolution involves the coupling of species fit- ness landscapes, linking species genetic changes with their inter-specific ecological interactions. Here we first introduce the Red Queen hypothesis of evolution com- menting on some theoretical aspects and empirical evidences. As an introduction to the fitness landscape concept, we review key issues on evolution on simple and rugged fitness landscapes. Then we present key modeling examples of coevolution on different fitness landscapes at different scales, from RNA viruses to complex ecosystems and macroevolution.Comment: 40 pages, 12 figures.     Scott Sloan (1954–2019) was a leader of academic engineering in Australia and beyond, as evidenced by his numerous professional accolades and important research achievements, which have had significant impact on his chosen profession of geotechnical engineering. Educated in Australia and the United Kingdom, he returned to Australia in 1984 and developed a large and active research group at the University of Newcastle, and tackled a wide range of important problems in civil and mining engineering. These include the development of computational methods to predict the mechanical behaviour of soil and rock masses, and his pioneering methods to predict the collapse states of structures made of, on, and in, earth materials, allowing engineers to design cheaper and safer civil infrastructure around the globe. Sloan established long-standing international collaborations and was awarded many honours for his research achievements. He was also a keen and skilful fisherman and a more than competent blues guitar player.Postprint (published version
