Structure of 12Be: intruder d-wave strength at N=8

    Get PDF
The breaking of the N=8 shell-model magic number in the 12Be ground state has been determined to include significant occupancy of the intruder d-wave orbital. This is in marked contrast with all other N=8 isotones, both more and less exotic than 12Be. The occupancies of the 0 hbar omega neutron p1/2-orbital and the 1 hbar omega, neutron d5/2 intruder orbital were deduced from a measurement of neutron removal from a high-energy 12Be beam leading to bound and unbound states in 11Be.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

    7Li quasi-free scattering off the alpha-cluster in 9Be nucleus

Spectra of coincident charged particles from the reactions induced by a 52 MeV 7Li beam incident on a beryllium target were measured. Strong contributions of the 7Li quasi-free scattering off the alpha-cluster in 9Be nucleus were observed. This observation supports the conclusions from the study of complete fusion of weakly bound light nuclei at low energies that the "fragility" of the nuclei makes their fusion less probable.Comment: Short Note, 3 pages, 3 Postscript figures, latex with The European Physical Journal style, to be published in The European Physical Journal

Solving the large discrepancy between inclusive and exclusive measurements of the 8Li+4He11B+n{}^8{\rm Li}+{}^4{\rm He}\to{}^{11}{\rm B}+n reaction cross section at astrophysical energies

A solution of the large discrepancy existing between inclusive and exclusive measurements of the 8Li+4He11B+n{}^8{\rm Li}+{}^4{\rm He}\to{}^{11}{\rm B}+n reaction cross section at Ecm<3E_{cm} <3 MeV is evaluated. This problem has profound astrophysical relevance for this reaction is of great interest in Big-Bang and r-process nucleosynthesis. By means of a novel technique, a comprehensive study of all existing 8Li+4He11B+n{}^8{\rm Li}+{}^4{\rm He}\to{}^{11}{\rm B}+n cross section data is carried out, setting up a consistent picture in which all the inclusive measurements provide the reliable value of the cross section. New unambiguous signatures of the strong branch pattern non-uniformities, near the threshold of higher 11B{}^{11}{\rm B} excited levels, are presented and their possible origin, in terms of the cluster structure of the involved excited states of 11B{}^{11}{\rm B} and 12B{}^{12}{\rm B} nuclei, is discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    6^{6}He + α\alpha clustering in 10^{10}Be

In a kinematically complete measurement of the 7^{7}Li(7^{7}Li,α\alpha6^{6}He)4^4He reaction at EiE_{i} = 8 MeV it was observed that the 10^{10}Be excited states at 9.6 and 10.2 MeV decay by 6^{6}He emission. The state at 10.2 MeV may be a member of a rotational band based on the 6.18 MeV 0+^+ state.Comment: 9 pages, RevTex, 3 Postscript figures (tarred, gzipped and uuencoded) include

Hints of quasi-molecular states in 13B via the study of 9Li-4He elastic scattering

8 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab. This paper reports on elastic scattering excitation functions for the reaction Li+He measured at backward angles in the centre of mass energy range 5 MeV ≤ E≤c.m.9.5 MeV, with the aim of investigating the possible existence of molecular resonances which have been predicted to exist in the case of neutron-rich B-isotopes. Due to the short lifetime of Li, the experiment necessitated the use of inverse kinematics on a gaseous He target. The Thick Target Inverse Kinematics technique was used which allowed for the measurement of the full excitation function in a single Li run. Broad resonances were observed in the excitation region for B 15 MeV ≤ E≤20 MeV. To understand the nature of such broad structures, various theoretical attempts are reported concerning possible reaction mechanisms for this neutron rich reaction. The most promising approach to interpret the data is within the orbiting reaction scenario. This work was supported by INFN and partially supported by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain, through the projects PGC2018-096994-B-C21, PID2019-104390GB-I00, PID2020-114687GB-I00 and by the Consejería de Economía, Conocimiento, Empresas y Universidad, Junta de Andalucía (Spain) through the project P20_0124

Investigation of cluster states in 13b using the 9li-α resonant elastic scattering

The excitation function of the resonant reaction 4He(9Li,α) was measured with the aim of investigating the compound nucleus 13B. These measurements were performed in inverse kinematics at center-of-mass scattering angles close to 180° by using a thick 4He gas target and a 9Li beam. The 13B excitation energy region explored was 14-20 MeV where 9Li-αurations of 13B are predicted by Antysimmetrised Molecular Dynamics calculations. The measured excitation function at θcm= 180°s different clear structures in a 13B excitation energy region which was experimentally unknown

Probing proton halo effects in the 8B+64Zn collision around the Coulomb barrier

    Get PDF
Proton halo effects in the 8B+64Zn reaction at an energy around 1.5 times the Coulomb barrier have been studied at HIE-ISOLDE CERN using, for the first time, the only existing postaccelerated 8B beam. This, together with the use of a high granularity and large solid angle detection system, allowed for a careful mapping of the elastic angular distribution, especially in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region. Contrary to what is observed for the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on the same target in a similar energy range, the analysis of the elastic scattering angular distribution shows only a modest suppression of the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak, with no remarkable enhancement of the total reaction cross-section. Inclusive angular and energy distributions of 7Be produced in direct reaction processes have also been measured. The comparison of these data with the results of theoretical calculations for the elastic and non-elastic breakup contributions indicate that both processes are important. Overall, the experimental data suggest a 8B collision dynamics at the barrier very different from the one of neutron halo nuclei, showing only modest effects of coupling to continuum. This behaviour can be interpreted as due to the presence of the additional Coulomb interactions halo-core and halo-target together with the presence of the centrifugal barrier felt by the valence proton of 8B
