Effect of Arm Motion on Standing Lateral Jump Performance

    Get PDF
Previous jumping studies have examined the role of arm swing in vertical and horizontal long jump performance, but none have been found which studied the role of arm swing in standing lateral jumps. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of arm motion on standing lateral jump performance and to examine the biomechanical mechanisms that may explain differences in jump distance. A series of lateral jump experiments was performed for two jump cases (free and restricted arms) in which six participants jumped laterally for maximum distance from two in-ground force platforms. A motion capture system collected 3D position data for lateral jumps with free and restricted arms. Inverse dynamics analyses were performed on three-dimensional (3D) models for free and restricted arm jumps and the joint angular velocities, moments, powers, and work values were compared. The mechanisms enabling any performance improvement of lateral jump performance due to free arm motion were also investigated. Results showed that free arm motion improved standing lateral jump performance by 29%. This improvement was due to the increase in take-off velocity and increase in the lateral and vertical displacement of the center of gravity at take-off and touchdown. The improved take-off velocity and position of the center of gravity at take-off was due to a 33% increase in the work done by the body in jumps with free arm movement. This increase in work in free arm jumps compared to restricted arm jumps was found in both upper and lower body joints with the largest improvements (\u3e 30 J) occurring at the lower back, right hip, and right shoulder. The increase in work performed at the lower back and right hip could not be explained by joint torque augmentation resulting from the slowing of joint angular velocities due to arm movement. Other mechanisms involved in enabling this work improvement can be discovered from further investigations of this movement. For example, computer simulation studies could provide additional insight into the motor control strategies employed in lateral jumps with free and restricted arm movement

Advertising is an expanding and important component in the context of any organization. It is a part of marketing strategy that an organization should apply in order to increase the consumer interest and thereby gain on market share. In Bangladesh advertising agencies are not well organized. Three advertising firms named Bitopy, East Asiatic and Interspan were established in 1967. Now the total numbers of advertising agencies are almost seven hundreds. Yet they are more competitive than previous. And new employment opportunity has been created & they have been performing in more professional manner. So it is important to know the structure of each department and functions of advertising agency. This study adopts with qualitative in nature. From the research, other researchers and policy makers will get an insight about the departmental structure and functions of advertising agencies in Bangladesh. Bangladesh emerges as a popular tourist destination for her natural heritage, beautiful coasts and beaches, archeological remains, historical and religious places, hills and islands, forests and jungles and attractive countryside with inestimable water bodies and green fields of agriculture. These valuable natural and cultural heritages are major parts of our tourism industry. Every year, many nature loving people visit here and contribute a major part in our national economy. So, Bangladesh has many things to offer to our precious visitors, but Archaeological and historical tourism in Bangladesh, as a fragment of the larger tourism industry, can be the major contributor to total tourism earnings. “Foreign tourists who come to Bangladesh, like to enjoy archaeological and historical places first, while their second choice is scenic beauty” (Ali & Parvin, 2010). The Swap Matching Problem Revisited

In this paper, we revisit the much studied problem of Pattern Matching with Swaps (Swap Matching problem, for short). We first present a graph-theoretic model, which opens a new and so far unexplored avenue to solve the problem. Then, using the model, we devise two efficient algorithms to solve the swap matching problem. The resulting algorithms are adaptations of the classic shift-and algorithm. For patterns having length similar to the word-size of the target machine, both the algorithms run in linear time considering a fixed alphabet.Comment: 23 pages, 3 Figures and 17 Table

Employer and Student Characteristics that Predict Disagreement About College Graduates\u27 Skill Improvement Needs

    Get PDF
College of business students and representatives of employers likely to recruit them rated the skills new college graduates most need to improve upon. Although there were high levels of agreement for most of the skills, students\u27 and employers\u27 ratings differed dramatically for interviewing skills, lose [the] sense of entitlement, and realistic expectations. We coded individual differences from the student survey and recruiting strategy and industry differences from the employer survey and then used regression to explore how these variables influenced student and employer ratings. Essentially nothing that occurs on the college campus improved students\u27 ability to identify the problems reported by employers. Rather, students\u27 misconceptions (as defined by employers) were reduced only by getting older, getting real-world experience (from full time jobs and internships), and by having more highly educated parents. The implication is that an important blind spot has developed in the business curriculum

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Dengue is one of the most important emerging viral diseases of major public health concern in Bangladesh. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practice on dengue fever transmission and prevention among the residents of Dhaka city, Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done among three hundred and forty three randomly selected residents of urban and periurban regions of Dhaka city in November in 2012 using a pretested and self administered questionnaire.  Data was analyzed by a Chi square test and p value less than 0.05 is considered as significant. Results: The study found that among the respondents 63.3% were female, 48% were married and 37.7% were of age group of 21-30 (mean=31.34, SD=11.758). Majority of the respondents had secondary/higher secondary (50.9%) and students represented 34.1% of the total respondents. It was found most of them had no history of having affected from dengue fever (97.7%) and 53.2% did not travel to the subtropical or tropical region. Television (61.2%) and radio (50.4) were most common source of information of dengue fever. Majority of the respondents had low level of knowledge on dengue (89.1%). It was found that 81% knew that mosquitoes generally lay their eggs on dirty water, 79.6% knew mosquitoes spread dengue from one person to another and 70.6% were aware that dengue can fever is flu like illness that affects infants, young, children and adults. The study revealed 50.1% had neutral attitude towards dengue fever, and there was significant association between age and practice (p=0.031); knowledge and practice (p<0.000) and also attitude and practice (p<0.000). Conclusion: There is a different level of knowledge regarding dengue fever among respondents in the study area. Public awareness is necessary to address the knowledge gap revealed by this study. Hence it is necessary to organize the public education program to prevent the people from the outbreak of dengue by increasing level of Knowledge so that they can attain positive attitude and adopt desired behavioral changes. Keywords: Knowledge, Attitude, Practice, Dengue Fever, Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, Dengue Shock Syndrome
