Voluntary sodium intake during effort in hot environments

The factors that influence the amount of salt that a person adds to his food at mealtime, and the part played by the general requirement for salt in the daily diet stemming from the coluntary input of salt are studied. Careful measurements of salt intake and outflow were performed on ten marchers in a high temperature environment who were given individual salt shakers that were weighed before and after each meal. Some marchers were told to add salt to their meals on specific days. No parallelity was found between the voluntary sodium intake and the general sodium intake, the excretion of sodium in the urine or the environmental heat stress. Individual food habit was found to be the most important factor

Changes in the Early Holocene lacustrine environment inferred from the subfossil ostracod record in the Varangu section, northern Estonia

The Varangu section is located on the southern slope of the Pandivere Upland in northern Estonia. A silty clay bed formed in the study area at 11 ;200–9300 ;cal ;yr ;BP, according to ostracod subfossils (e.g. Tonnacypris estonica, Leucocythere mirabilis, Limnocytherina sanctipatricii) in an oxygen-rich cool and oligotrophic profundal lacustrine environment, with an inflow of surface waters through springs. The record of specific ostracods (e.g. Cyclocypris ovum, Cypridopsis vidua, Metacypris cordata) reflects littoral environments, ongoing eutrophication, temperature increase and a progressive shallowing of the lake in the early Holocene (9300–7400 ;cal ;yr ;BP) when the tufa bed accumulated. A slight cooling and productivity decrease at 9100–8600 ;cal ;yr ;BP preceded further temperature rise and water level lowering, leading to the development of a eutrophic lake and cease of ; ;tufa precipitation (8600–7400 ;cal ;yr ;BP)

Reduction of voluntary dehydration during effort in hot environments

During an experimental marching trip the daily positive fluid balance was preserved by providing a wide choice of beverages during the hours of the day. It was found that the beverage most suitable for drinking in large quantities during periods of effort was a cold drink with sweetened (citrus) fruit taste. Carbonated drinks, including beer, but milk also, were found unsuitable for this purpose

Design and verification of inquiry-based tasks on the topic of separating the components of a mixture for elementary school learners

1 ABSTRAKT Bakalářská práce zpracovává problematiku badatelsky orientované výuky, a to hlavně v rámci výuky chemie pro žáky základní školy. V první polovině teoretické části se tedy věnuji vymezení úrovní BOV, její proces zařazení do výuky a vymezení pojmu IBSE (inquiry-based science education). Efektivitu a funkčnost samotných experimentů byla podložena vlastním provedením a kvalitativním analýzou, jež byla založena na informacích získaných z dotazníků, které jsem rozeslal učitelům chemie ze základních škol.1 ABSTRACT The bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of research-oriented teaching, mainly within the framework of teaching chemistry for elementary school students. In the first half of the theoretical part, I therefore focus on the definition of BOV levels, the process of including it in teaching and the definition of the term IBSE (inquiry-based science education). The second half is devoted to the description of chemical procedures and a search for published BOV topics on the separation of mixtures. The main goal of the subsequent practical part was to design and verify the newly created BOV tasks. Overall, three experiments are described specifically on the topic of filtration, which fulfill the essence of structured research and are designed for students who are just getting to know chemistry and its essence. An important idea for the tasks was to create them in such a way that the students could try them out at home and thus further deepen their research skills. The effectiveness and functionality of the experiments themselves was supported by my own implementation and qualitative analysis, which was based on information obtained from questionnaires that I sent to chemistry teachers from elementary schools.Katedra chemie a didaktiky chemiePedagogická fakultaFaculty of Educatio

    RadioSource.NET: Case-study of a Collaborative Land-Grant Internet Audio Project

    Get PDF
RadioSource.NET (http://radiosource.net) is a Web-portal news site for land-grant university radio programming. The project is a collaborative venture among university communication departments with the following goals: to share resources; increase online distribution; and promote access to agricultural and natural and life science research. This article is a case study of RadioSource.NET. The evolution of the RadioSource.NET project is examined with emphasis on the process of establishing and maintaining online collaborative partnerships within academia. The project’s development is described and discussed, and Wheeler, Valacich, Alavi, and Vogel’s (1995) framework for technology-mediated interinstitutional relationships for collaborative learning is used to help organize information and evaluate the project’s effectiveness. RadioSource.NET project is an example of successful university collaboration in new media. By utilizing a flexible system design, RadioSource.NET capitalizes on collaborative strengths such as increased innovation and efficiency, and it is anticipated that the project model can serve as a useful resource for other online collaborative endeavors utilizing emerging technologies
