    Strong evidences for a nonextensive behavior of the rotation period in Open Clusters

    Time-dependent nonextensivity in a stellar astrophysical scenario combines nonextensive entropic indices qKq_{K} derived from the modified Kawaler's parametrization, and qq, obtained from rotational velocity distribution. These qq's are related through a heuristic single relation given by qq0(1Δt/qK)q\approx q_{0}(1-\Delta t/q_{K}), where tt is the cluster age. In a nonextensive scenario, these indices are quantities that measure the degree of nonextensivity present in the system. Recent studies reveal that the index qq is correlated to the formation rate of high-energy tails present in the distribution of rotation velocity. On the other hand, the index qKq_{K} is determined by the stellar rotation-age relationship. This depends on the magnetic field configuration through the expression qK=1+4aN/3q_{K}=1+4aN/3, where aa and NN denote the saturation level of the star magnetic field and its topology, respectively. In the present study, we show that the connection qqKq-q_{K} is also consistent with 548 rotation period data for single main-sequence stars in 11 Open Clusters aged less than 1 Gyr. The value of qKq_{K}\sim 2.5 from our unsaturated model shows that the mean magnetic field topology of these stars is slightly more complex than a purely radial field. Our results also suggest that stellar rotational braking behavior affects the degree of anti-correlation between qq and cluster age tt.     Float-polishing process and analysis of float-polished quartz

    A fluid-mechanical model is developed for the float-polishing process. In this model laminar flow between the sample and the lap results in pressure gradients at the grooves that support the sample on a fluid layer. The laminar fluid motion also produces supersmooth, damage-free surfaces. Quartz substrates for applications in high-stress environments were float polished, and their surfaces were analyzed by optical scatterometry, photoacoustic spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The removal of 100 µm of material by a lapping-polishing process, with final float polishing, left low levels of subsurface damage, with a surface roughness of approximately 0.2-nm rms

    VetCompass Australia: A National Big Data Collection System for Veterinary Science

    VetCompass Australia is veterinary medical records-based research coordinated with the global VetCompass endeavor to maximize its quality and effectiveness for Australian companion animals (cats, dogs, and horses). Bringing together all seven Australian veterinary schools, it is the first nationwide surveillance system collating clinical records on companion-animal diseases and treatments. VetCompass data service collects and aggregates real-time, clinical records for researchers to interrogate, delivering sustainable and cost-effective access to data from hundreds of veterinary practitioners nationwide. Analysis of these clinical records will reveal geographical and temporal trends in the prevalence of inherited and acquired diseases, identify frequently prescribed treatments, revolutionize clinical auditing, help the veterinary profession to rank research priorities, and assure evidence-based companion-animal curricula in veterinary schools. VetCompass Australia will progress in three phases: (1) roll-out of the VetCompass platform to harvest Australian veterinary clinical record data; (2) development and enrichment of the coding (data-presentation) platform; and (3) creation of a world-first, real-time surveillance interface with natural language processing (NLP) technology. The first of these three phases is described in the current article. Advances in the collection and sharing of records from numerous practices will enable veterinary professionals to deliver a vastly improved level of care for companion animals that will improve their quality of life

    Improved constraints on H0 from a combined analysis of gravitational-wave and electromagnetic emission from GW170817

    The luminosity distance measurement of GW170817 derived from GW analysis in Abbott et al. 2017 (here, A17:H0) is highly correlated with the measured inclination of the NS-NS system. To improve the precision of the distance measurement, we attempt to constrain the inclination by modeling the broad-band X-ray-to-radio emission from GW170817, which is dominated by the interaction of the jet with the environment. We update our previous analysis and we consider the radio and X-ray data obtained at t<40t<40 days since merger. We find that the afterglow emission from GW170817 is consistent with an off-axis relativistic jet with energy 1048erg<Ek3×1050erg10^{48}\,\rm{erg}<E_{k}\le 3\times 10^{50} \,\rm{erg} propagating into an environment with density n102104cm3n\sim10^{-2}-10^{-4} \,\rm{cm^{-3}}, with preference for wider jets (opening angle θj=15\theta_j=15 deg). For these jets, our modeling indicates an off-axis angle θobs2550\theta_{\rm obs}\sim25-50 deg. We combine our constraints on θobs\theta_{\rm obs} with the joint distance-inclination constraint from LIGO. Using the same 170\sim 170 km/sec peculiar velocity uncertainty assumed in A17:H0 but with an inclination constraint from the afterglow data, we get a value of H0=H_0=74.0±11.57.574.0 \pm \frac{11.5}{7.5} \mbox{km/s/Mpc}, which is higher than the value of H0=H_0=70.0±12.08.070.0 \pm \frac{12.0}{8.0} \mbox{km/s/Mpc} found in A17:H0. Further, using a more realistic peculiar velocity uncertainty of 250 km/sec derived from previous work, we find H0=H_0=75.5±11.69.675.5 \pm \frac{11.6}{9.6} km/s/Mpc for H0 from this system. We note that this is in modestly better agreement with the local distance ladder than the Planck CMB, though a significant such discrimination will require 50\sim 50 such events.     Cloud-based implementation of a SON radio resources planning system for mobile networks and integration in SaaS metric

    In mobile network deployments of growing size, the optimum and fast planning of radio resources are a key task. Cloud services enable efficient and scalable implementation of procedures and algorithms. In this paper, a proof of concept implementation of a cloud-based network planning work pattern using Amazon Web Services (AWS) is presented, containing new and efficient radio resource planning algorithms for 3G, 4G and 5G systems. It extracts configuration and performance data from the network, enabling to accurately estimate cells coverage, identify neighboring cells and optimally plan scrambling codes (SCs) and physical cell identity (PCI) in 3G and 4G/5G networks, respectively. This implementation was integrated and is available in the commercial Metric Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) monitoring and planning tool. The cloud-based planning system is demonstrated in various canonical and realistic Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) scenarios, and compared to an algorithm previously used by Metric. For a small LTE realistic scenario consisting of 9 sites and 23 cells, it takes less than 0.6 seconds to perform the planning. For an UMTS realistic scenario with 12 484 unplanned cells, the planning is efficiently achieved, taking less than 8 seconds, and guaranteeing no collisions between first order neighboring cells.
