Efeitos do etil-cianoacrilato ou do octil-cianoacrilato sobre lesões corneais experimentais em coelhos
The use of ethyl-cyanoacrylate and octyl-cyanoacrylate were clinically and histopathologically compared on the corneas of 36 rabbits after lamellar keratectomy (standardized diameter and depth). The animals were distributed into two groups, one for each type of adhesive. From each group, six subgroups were histopathologically evaluated on the 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, 30th, and 60th day post-operative. General (daily) and ophthalmic (days 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21, 30, 44, and 60) evaluations clinically indicated that there were significant differences for the variables water intake, attitude, blepharitis, corneal edema, and fluorescein test. The adhesive permanence time for octyl-cyanoacrylate (17.22 days) was greater than that for ethyl-cyanoacrylate (7.66 days). With respect to the histopathological evaluation, corneal epithelization and collagen organization occurred without severe complications. However, treatment with ethyl-cyanoacrylate led to a moderate inflammatory reaction in the initial phases. With octyl-cyanoacrylate, re-epithelization and collagen organization proceeded more slowly with a discrete inflammatory reaction in the initial phases. From clinical and histopathologic points of view, octyl-cyanoacrylate showed advantages over ethyl-cyanoacrylate, whereas wound healing was achieved in both groups without major complications.
Sources of CP Violation in the Two-Higgs Doublet Model
Assuming CP violation arises solely through the Higgs potential, we develop
the most general two-Higgs doublet model. There is no discrete symmetry that
distinguishes the two Higgs bosons. It is assumed that an approximate global
family symmetry sufficiently suppresses flavor-changing neutral scalar
interactions. In addition to a CKM phase, neutral boson mixing, and superweak
effects, there can be significant CP violation due to charged Higgs boson
exchange. The value of due to this last effect could be as
large as in the standard model.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex, (appear in Phys. Rev. Lett. 73, (1994) 1762 ),

Crop -glucanase activity limits the effectiveness of a recombinant cellulase used to supplement a barley-based feed for free-range broilers
1. The supplementation of diets rich in soluble polysaccharides with microbial cellulases
and hemicellulases decreases digesta viscosity and promotes broiler performance.
2. In contrast, recent experiments suggest that polysaccharidases are ineffective for improving the
nutritive value of pasture biomass used by free-range broilers. However, the feasibility of using cellulases
and hemicellulases to improve the utilisation of cereal-based feeds by pastured poultry remains to be
established.
3. A study was undertaken to investigate the capacity of a recombinant cellulase from Clostridium
thermocellum to improve the nutritive value of a barley-based feed for free-range pastured broilers of the
RedBro Cou Nu RedBro M genotype.
4. The results show that supplementation of a barley-based diet with a recombinant -glucanase had
no effect on the performance of free-range broilers, foraging in legume-based diets from d 28 to 56.
In addition, the results confirm that the lack of effect of the recombinant enzyme in improving the
nutritive value of the barley-based feed does not result from enzyme proteolysis or inhibition in the
gastrointestinal tract.
5. Significantly, -glucanase activity was identified in the crop of non-supplemented animals. The data
suggest that endogenous cellulases originated both from the barley-based feed and from the crop
microflora.
6. The results presented here suggest that in older birds of slow-growing genotypes associated with
free-range production systems, previously unknown sources of -glucanases, such as the feed and
microbial symbiotic microflora, can affect the effectiveness of exogenous enzymes added to the feed
Characterization and observation of animals responsible for rabies post-exposure treatment in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
In order to provide relevant therapeutic answers to human patients exposed to risk of rabies infection
who visit the lnstitut Pasteur du Cambodge for post-exposure treatment and to improve control of
rabies in Cambodia, a pilot study was carried out in Phnom Penh Province in November and December
1997 with three objectives: characterization of the population of animals responsible for the exposure
to rabies, observation of the animals concerned, and confirmation of the presence of rabies
virus in the province. Between 18 November 1997 and 19 December 1997, 409 of the 741 patients
treated at the lnstitut Pasteur du Cambodge because of an exposure to a known rabies vector were
included in the study. The animals concerned were: 401 dogs (98 %), six monkeys (1 ,5 %) and two
cats (0,5%). Three-hundred-and-seventy of the animals (90,5%) were owned, 4 (1 %) were unowned
but were available for characterization and observation, and 35 (8,6 %) had an unknown ownership
status and were not available for further study. The exposures occurred on private property in 84% of
the cases, and 80 of the 370 owned animals (22 %) lived in the same home as had the patient. The
374 animals with known ownership status were examined. Five were already dead and two of these
five dogs had presented clinical signs typical of those of rabies. The male:female sex ratio of the dogs
was 2,1: 1. The 369 live animals were placed under observation for 10 d immediately after exposure
of the humans had taken place. At the end of the period none of the animals had developed clinical
signs of rabies, three had died of diseases other than rabies, and one was lost. Tests for the rabies
nucleocapsid antigen were positive in two cases (the two suspected rabid dogs), confirming the presence
of rabies in Phnom Penh Province. Consequently, we recommend measures to improve the
control of rabies in Cambodia. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

Long Distance Contribution to and Implications for and
We estimate the long distance (LD) contribution to the magnetic part of the
transition using the Vector Meson Dominance approximation
. We find that this contribution may be significantly
larger than the short distance (SD) contribution to and could
possibly saturate the present experimental upper bound on the decay rate, eV. For the decay , which is driven by as well, we obtain an upper bound on the branching ratio from . Barring the possibility that the Quantum Chromodynamics
coefficient be much smaller than 1, also implies the approximate relation .
This relation agrees quantitatively with a recent independent estimate of the
l.h.s. by Deshpande et al., confirming that the LD contributions to are small. We find that these amount to an increase of in
the magnitude of the transition amplitude, relative to the SD
contribution alone.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX fil
Potential of elephant grass genotypes silages as exclusive roughage on tissue composition and meat quality of lambs: a preliminary study
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of diets containing elephant grass genotypes silages as exclusive roughage on leg tissue composition, and physicochemical characteristics of meat of lambs. Twenty-four crossbred male lambs with an average initial body weight of 20.29±2.66kg were distributed in a complete randomized design with three treatments and eight replicates. The treatments consisted of three silages of elephant grass genotypes (IRI-381, Elephant B or Mott), without additives or wilting, as the only roughage. The diets did not affect (P>0.05) the dry matter (898.70±60.10 g/day), crude protein (128.93±6.91g/day), total digestible nutrients (690.20±91.82g/day) intakes, body weight at slaughter (24.83±2.79kg), and carcass yields (P>0.05). The tissue composition of the leg did not differ significantly between silages of elephant grass genotypes (P>0.05). No difference (P>0.05) for the physicochemical characteristics of meat from lambs fed diets tested was observed. Therefore, our results indicate that diets containing 50% elephant grass genotypes silages (IRI-381, Elephant B or Mott), harvested at 60 days of growth, have potential for use in lambs feeding
Transfer learning for galaxy morphology from one survey to another
© 2018 The Author(s). Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society.Deep Learning (DL) algorithms for morphological classification of galaxies have proven very successful, mimicking (or even improving) visual classifications. However, these algorithms rely on large training samples of labelled galaxies (typically thousands of them). A key question for using DL classifications in future Big Data surveys is how much of the knowledge acquired from an existing survey can be exported to a new dataset, i.e. if the features learned by the machines are meaningful for different data. We test the performance of DL models, trained with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, on Dark Energy survey (DES) using images for a sample of 5000 galaxies with a similar redshift distribution to SDSS. Applying the models directly to DES data provides a reasonable global accuracy ( 90%), but small completeness and purity values. A fast domain adaptation step, consisting in a further training with a small DES sample of galaxies (500-300), is enough for obtaining an accuracy > 95% and a significant improvement in the completeness and purity values. This demonstrates that, once trained with a particular dataset, machines can quickly adapt to new instrument characteristics (e.g., PSF, seeing, depth), reducing by almost one order of magnitude the necessary training sample for morphological classification. Redshift evolution effects or significant depth differences are not taken into account in this study.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
