The Problem that Has a Name: On “Mama Grizzlies” and Conservative Feminism

    Get PDF
Despite an overall tendency to dismiss some of the struggles associated with second-wave feminism under the theoretical assumption of post-feminism, numerous issues related to women and their rights are yet to be resolved. In the USA, problems such as unequal payment and lack of proper work-family support, together with a steadfast conservative endeavor to hinder reproductive rights, prove the urgency of feminist critical stances. While fostering a culture of life, several conservative groups have been appropriating feminism in order to endorse their pro-life policies; Sarah Palin, for instance, while speaking at an antiabortion gathering, recently sparked a heated debate due to her use of the terms “mama grizzlies” and “new conservative feminism”. By focusing on Palin’s speech, this essay intends to explore how feminism is being redefined by U.S. conservative women so as to reinforce patriotism and reinstate an idealized and institutionalized motherhood

Alternative methods to synthetic chemical control of Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. A systematic review

ABSTRACT: Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. is one of the worst agricultural weeds and invasive species in the world, being widely established in many countries. Despite its impact on agriculture and the growing awareness of authorities and consumers about the consequences of synthetic herbicides, alternative control methods for this weed have been poorly reviewed. A systematic review of the literature published over the last 50 years was used to assess the most studied control methods of C. dactylon (excluding synthetic herbicides) and to summarize the trends and knowledge gaps. The major fndings are as follows: (1) the number of publications that studied alternative methods to synthetic chemical control in C. dactylon management has been increasing exponentially since 1972; (2) most of the studies were made under controlled conditions (57%) and lack observations under real production conditions; (3) most of the feld experiments were carried out in Asia (42%), under temperate subtropical and arid climates; (4) the publication of articles studying allelopathy stands out signifcantly (50% of the papers found), with two species from the Poaceae family, rice (Oryza sativa L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), showing very high allelopathic inhibitory efects (often above 80%), especially under open feld conditions; and (5) preventive soil tillage is the most studied treatment among indirect weed control treatments, and although there is a high risk of propagation, the results indicate that tillage can signifcantly contribute to control C. dactylon, when compared to no-tillage treatments. Further research is needed to optimize treatments and methods so that they can be applied by farmers under real production conditions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Get PDF
This research aimed at analyzing the relation between emotions and consumer fraud, based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM). For this purpose, Sentiment Analysis was performed using the Natural Language Processing (NLP) from Twitter data obtained on the day of the event, and content analysis to understand the factors involved in the event and whether companies with reported complaints on PROCON/SP (2019) and the website Reclame Aqui (2019) were related. The results show that most emotions arising from Black Friday Brazil are both negative and related to consumer fraud. They also reveal that individuals who had low involvement with the persuasive messages used emotions as simple indications, unlike individuals who were highly involved and used emotions as an argument in the persuasive process to avoid being victims of fraud.

Economic Shocks and Crime: Evidence from the Brazilian Trade Liberalization

    Get PDF
This paper studies the effect of changes in economic conditions on crime. We exploit the 1990s trade liberalization in Brazil as a natural experiment generating exogenous shocks to local economies. We document that regions exposed to larger tariff reductions experienced a temporary increase in crime following liberalization. Next, we investigate through what channels the trade-induced economic shocks may have affected crime. We show that the shocks had significant effects on potential determinants of crime, such as labor market conditions, public goods provision, and income inequality. We propose a novel framework exploiting the distinct dynamic responses of these variables to obtain bounds on the effect of labor market conditions on crime. Our results indicate that this channel accounts for 75 to 93 percent of the effect of the trade-induced shocks on crime

Acnistus arborescens (Solanaceae): An important food resource for birds in an Atlantic Forest site, Southeastern Brazil

    Get PDF
Biotic interactions related to the consumption of floral nectar and fruits as food resource by birds promoting plant pollination and dispersal, are essential for forest ecosystem functioning. The daily interaction of birds with Acnistus arborescens (L.) Schltdl. (Solanaceae), a shrub-tree, was studied in the Itatiaia National Park and its surroundings. Reproductive phenology was monthly monitored in eighteen individuals in 2015. During flowering (August to November) and fruiting (September to December) the interaction birds-plant was studied. Flowers were visited by seven hummingbird species and several insects. Fruit set was 87.3%. Thirty-five bird species of eleven families consumed its fruit. Thraupidae with sixteen bird species was the family responsible for most of its frugivory (53.9%). Considering that more than 10% of the birds richness of Itatiaia National Park INP interacts with A. arborescens, it can be considered an important plant species in maintaining local bird diverstity. Thus, for attracting many birds, A. arborescens can be used in the process of recovery of degraded areas, and also as a focal plant species for environmental education programs and birdwatching.

The following work intends to analyze possible biographical relationships of Virginia Woolf in the novel Mrs. Dalloway, 1925. In the author's vast literary bibliography, only in Mrs. Dalloway does a suicidal character appear, Septimus Warren-Smith, which leads us to reflect on Woolf's choices in the construction of the character and in his presentation in plot. According to the literary theorist, Maurice Blanchot, literature is a space of death, and considering this aspect, the character Septimus Warren-Smith could show signs of a premonitory event: the author's suicide a few years later. Virginia Woolf demonstrates, through some records, the importance of writing in her life by using the literary space as a cathartic exercise in her relationship with the world. The intention of the work is to identify a possibility of survival for the author from the death of Septimus Warren-Smith in the novel. To achieve this, the concept of creative adjustment of Gestalt Therapy was used, through the studies of Perls (1977); Hefferline (1997); Goodman (1997), with the aim of elucidating the author's relationship with her artistic work and her supposed survival, as well as Marice Blanchot's (1987; 2011) essays on literary activity and its correspondence with death. With the intention of enabling a comprehensive view of the facts involved – aesthetic and biographical – it was necessary to add to the methodological tools of the Theory of Literature, such as James Wood (2012), and Cultural Studies, such as Foucault (2001), aspects of psychoanalysis asserted by Freud (2010) and studies on biographical attributes elaborated by Bourdieu (2006).O presente trabalho pretende analisar possíveis relações biográficas de Virginia Woolf no romance Mrs. Dalloway, de 1925.
