    Multiple dietary supplements do not affect metabolic and cardio-vascular health

    Dietary supplements are widely used for health purposes. However, little is known about the metabolic and cardiovascular effects of combinations of popular over-the-counter supplements, each of which has been shown to have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and pro-longevity properties in cell culture or animal studies. This study was a 6-month randomized, single-blind controlled trial, in which 56 non-obese (BMI 21.0-29.9 kg/m(2)) men and women, aged 38 to 55 yr, were assigned to a dietary supplement (SUP) group or control (CON) group, with a 6-month follow-up. The SUP group took 10 dietary supplements each day (100 mg of resveratrol, a complex of 800 mg each of green, black, and white tea extract, 250 mg of pomegranate extract, 650 mg of quercetin, 500 mg of acetyl-l-carnitine, 600 mg of lipoic acid, 900 mg of curcumin, 1 g of sesamin, 1.7 g of cinnamon bark extract, and 1.0 g fish oil). Both the SUP and CON groups took a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement. The main outcome measures were arterial stiffness, endothelial function, biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, and cardiometabolic risk factors. Twenty-four weeks of daily supplementation with 10 dietary supplements did not affect arterial stiffness or endothelial function in nonobese individuals. These compounds also did not alter body fat measured by DEXA, blood pressure, plasma lipids, glucose, insulin, IGF-1, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. In summary, supplementation with a combination of popular dietary supplements has no cardiovascular or metabolic effects in non-obese relatively healthy individuals

    Long-term calorie restriction, but not endurance exercise, lowers core body temperature in humans

    Reduction of body temperature has been proposed to contribute to the increased lifespan in calorie restricted animals and mice overexpressing the uncoupling protein-2 in hypocretin neurons. However, nothing is known regarding the long-term effects of calorie restriction (CR) with adequate nutrition on body temperature in humans. In this study, 24-hour core body temperature was measured every minute by using ingested telemetric capsules in 24 men and women (mean age 53.7±9.4 yrs) consuming a CR diet for an average of 6 years, 24 age- and sex-matched sedentary (WD) and 24 body fat-matched exercise-trained (EX) volunteers, who were eating Western diets. The CR and EX groups were significantly leaner than the WD group. Energy intake was lower in the CR group (1769±348 kcal/d) than in the WD (2302±668 kcal/d) and EX (2798±760 kcal/d) groups (P<0.0001). Mean 24-hour, day-time and night-time core body temperatures were all significantly lower in the CR group than in the WD and EX groups (P≤0.01). Long-term CR with adequate nutrition in lean and weight-stable healthy humans is associated with a sustained reduction in core body temperature, similar to that found in CR rodents and monkeys. This adaptation is likely due to CR itself, rather than to leanness, and may be involved in slowing the rate of aging

    Frontiers of antifibrotic therapy in systemic sclerosis

    Although fibrosis is becoming increasingly recognized as a major cause of morbidity and mortality in modern societies, targeted anti-fibrotic therapies are still not approved for most fibrotic disorders. However, intense research over the last decade has improved our understanding of the underlying pathogenesis of fibrotic diseases. We now appreciate fibrosis as the consequence of a persistent tissue repair responses, which, in contrast to normal wound healing, fails to be effectively terminated. Profibrotic mediators released from infiltrating leukocytes, activated endothelial cells and degranulated platelets may predominantly drive fibroblast activation and collagen release in early stages, whereas endogenous activation of fibroblasts due epigenetic modifications and biomechanical or physical factors such as stiffening of the extracellular matrix and hypoxia may play pivotal role for disease progression in later stages. In the present review, we discuss novel insights into the pathogenesis of fibrotic diseases using systemic sclerosis (SSc) as example for an idiopathic, multisystem disorder. We set a strong translational focus and predominantly discuss approaches with very high potential for rapid transfer from bench-to-bedside. We highlight the molecular basis for ongoing clinical trials in SSc and also provide an outlook on upcoming trials. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

    PARTIAL RESULTS CONCERNING THE BEHAVIOR OF ENERGY WILLOW GENOTYPES IN CULTIVATED IMPROPER AREAS

    The paper presents partial results recorded on some experimental fields with energy willow (Salix viminalis) for recovery of land unfit for agriculture. Lately appeared the need for comprehensive studies to identify optimal solutions for these lands, namely the selection of genotypes to exploit their productive potential, but also to be adapted on summers with high temperatures (above 35°C) and extremely dry, and the cold winters. This was an attempt to test in the conditions of 2015 Swedish energy willow genotypes approved for cultivation in Romania, genotypes that were compared to some Romanian clones and hybrids. The main goal of the experience is to identify genotypes that possess tolerance/resistance to biotic and abiotic stress factors, in the specific area of southern Romania and introduce the current range of energy that crop plants

    THE VARIABILITY STUDY OF MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS ON SOME SALIX SPP. GENOTYPES

    The present study followed the analysis of some characters of 14 Romanian and Swedish genotypes of energy willow in different ecological conditions. Thus, they were analyzed the next characters: stem diameter on the base, total grow/pl., grow/stem, plant height and. no. of stems/pl. The analyzed factors were: the area and the genotype. The area factors had three levels: Radovan (medium fertility soil - Control), Tâmburești (sandy soil on irrigation) and Ișalnița (antropomorphic soil formed from coal ash). The recorded date showes the diversity and the genetic potential of the biological material, emphesizing the well beahivour of the local genotypes RO 1077, RO 1082 and RO 892 created on ICAS Bucharest in the three location. The foreign genotypes with good results were Inger siTorhild. Analyzing the averagre values recored in the three location, the best results were obtained in the Tamburesti area under irrigation conditions, no matter the studied character, the humidity level from the soil being a key factor for the success of the energy willow crop, no matter the soil type or genotype

    Concentric double hollow grid cathode discharges

    A new cathode system, consisting of two concentric spherical hollow grids with two aligned orifices, is investigated by space-resolved Langmuir probe measurements and non-linear dynamics analysis. Negative biases of this spherical hollow grids arrangement lead to the formation of two complex space charge structures in the regions of the orifices. The overall dynamics of the current-voltage characteristic (I–V characteristic) of each discharge is characterized by strong oscillatory behaviour with various waveforms correlated with jumps in the static I–V characteristics. Space-resolved measurements through the two aligned orifices of the two grids show a peak increase of the electron temperature and particle density in the regions of the two space-charge structures. The effects of the biases and Ar pressure on the overall spatial distribution of all plasma parameters are investigated. Two important working points of the concentric double hollow grid cathode discharges are revealed which could make this configuration suitable as an electron source

III; Mitral valve insufficiency gr. IV; Tricuspid valve insufficiency gr. IV; Heart failure NYHA functional class gr. III-IV. The case focuses on complications that may occur in late cardio surgeries and the development of AV block gr. III disorders. If complications arose during the evolution of the disease, there would have been performed multiple pacemaker reimplantations. The article insists on the way how cardiovascular complications start as much as on the importance of prompt medical supervision to ensure the patient’s quality of life.В данной статье описан клинический случай ребёнка в возрасте 17 лет, у которого по клинико-инструментальным данным был установлен клинический диагноз – врожденный порок сердца, Tетрада Фалло, aтриовентрикулярная блокада III-ей степени.     Oscillatory behavior of hollow grid cathode discharges

    Multiple complex space-charge structures in unmagnetized low-temperature plasmas arise from ionization phenomena near additional negatively or positively biased electrodes or due to local constraints. Because of their usually spherical form, such structures are called fireballs. If they appear inside hollow grids, they are called inverted fireballs or plasma bubbles. The temporal evolution of such structures is often accompanied by strong plasma instabilities. The dynamics of complex space-charge structures have been investigated by using single spherical grid cathode with an orifice. Langmuir probe and optical emission spectroscopy were used to diagnose the structures. Measurements delivered the axial profiles of the plasma potential, electron temperature and density, and the densities of excited atoms and ions, that confirmed the formation of a fireball in the region near the orifice (also evidenced by visual observation). Inside the grid, a plasma bubble has developed, with a high ion density inside due to the hollow cathode effect. Information on the nonlinear dynamics of the complex space charge structures was obtained from the analysis of the oscillations of the discharge current

    We show that very weak topological assumptions are enough to ensure the existence of a Helly-type theorem. More precisely, we show that for any non-negative integers bb and dd there exists an integer h(b,d)h(b,d) such that the following holds. If F\mathcal F is a finite family of subsets of Rd\mathbb R^d such that β~i(G)b\tilde\beta_i\left(\bigcap\mathcal G\right) \le b for any GF\mathcal G \subsetneq \mathcal F and every 0id/210 \le i \le \lceil d/2 \rceil-1 then F\mathcal F has Helly number at most h(b,d)h(b,d). Here β~i\tilde\beta_i denotes the reduced Z2\mathbb Z_2-Betti numbers (with singular homology). These topological conditions are sharp: not controlling any of these d/2\lceil d/2 \rceil first Betti numbers allow for families with unbounded Helly number.
