The impact of demographic change on U. S. labor markets
According to the U. S. Census Bureau projections, the United States will face dramatic demographic changes over the next one hundred years. Indeed, the country will be entering largely uncharted territory. In the twenty-first century, the population is expected to grow more slowly than ever before over an extended period. The population will also age rapidly, with the share of the population over 65 climbing to a succession of new record highs. Finally, the United States will once again become a nation of immigrants. Over the past decade, the wave of new immigrants has already neared proportions last seen in the early 1900s at the end of the Great Migrations. And this inflow is projected to persist throughout the coming century, with new immigrants and the children of those immigrants contributing well over half of the increase in the U. S. population. Because the source of this inflow has shifted from Europe to Latin America and Asia, this new wave will change the voice and face of America forever.Demography ; Economic conditions ; Labor market

Self-similar impulsive capillary waves on a ligament
We study the short-time dynamics of a liquid ligament, held between two solid
cylinders, when one is impulsively accelerated along its axis. A set of
one-dimensional equations in the slender-slope approximation is used to
describe the dynamics, including surface tension and viscous effects. An exact
self-similar solution to the linearized equations is successfully compared to
experiments made with millimetric ligaments. Another non-linear self-similar
solution of the full set of equations is found numerically. Both the linear and
non-linear solutions show that the axial depth at which the liquid is affected
by the motion of the cylinder scales like . The non-linear solution
presents the peculiar feature that there exists a maximum driving velocity
above which the solution disappears, a phenomenon probably related to
the de-pinning of the contact line observed in experiments for large pulling
velocities
Measuring subdiffusion parameters
We propose a method to extract from experimental data the subdiffusion
parameter and subdiffusion coefficient which are defined by
means of the relation where
denotes a mean square displacement of a random walker starting from
at the initial time . The method exploits a membrane system where a
substance of interest is transported in a solvent from one vessel to another
across a thin membrane which plays here only an auxiliary role. Using such a
system, we experimentally study a diffusion of glucose and sucrose in a gel
solvent. We find a fully analytic solution of the fractional subdiffusion
equation with the initial and boundary conditions representing the system under
study. Confronting the experimental data with the derived formulas, we show a
subdiffusive character of the sugar transport in gel solvent. We precisely
determine the parameter , which is smaller than 1, and the subdiffusion

Advances and challenges in umbilical cord blood and tissue bioprocessing: procurement and storage
Umbilical cord tissue and blood is banked to complement the rapidly advancing
field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for both
autologous and allogeneic therapeutic applications. Whilst many problems
concerning the use of the hematopoietic and multipotential mesenchymal
stromal cells contained therein may be addressed through the
future development of GMP-compliant manufacturing strategies, collection
and bioprocessing of these tissues can be optimised in the present
to maximise clinical outcomes. In this review, we describe current procurement,

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) attend typically to faces and objects presented within their picture communication systems
ackground Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may require interventions for communication difficulties. One type of intervention is picture communication symbols which are proposed to improve comprehension of linguistic input for children with ASD. However, atypical attention to faces and objects is widely reported across the autism spectrum for several types of stimuli. Method In this study we used eye-tracking methodology to explore fixation duration and time taken to fixate on the object and face areas within picture communication symbols. Twenty-one children with ASD were compared with typically developing matched groups. Results Children with ASD were shown to have similar fixation patterns on face and object areas compared with typically developing matched groups. Conclusions It is proposed that children with ASD attend to the images in a manner that does not differentiate them from typically developing individuals. Therefore children with and without autism have the same opportunity to encode the available information. We discuss what this may imply for interventions using picture symbols

Iodine deficiency in pregnant women in the ACT
In response to growing concern of an iodine deficiency emergence in Australia, this study was conducted to document the iodine status of pregnant women in the ACT. One hundred women presenting to the antenatal clinic at The Canberra Hospital answered a brief dietary questionnaire and provided a spot urine sample for the measurement of urine iodine excretion. The results revealed that the majority of women were consuming a diet low in iodine, confirmed by suboptimal concentrations of iodine in their urine
Dynamical frictional phenomena in an incommensurate two-chain model
Dynamical frictional phenomena are studied theoretically in a two-chain model
with incommensurate structure. A perturbation theory with respect to the
interchain interaction reveals the contributions from phonons excited in each
chain to the kinetic frictional force. The validity of the theory is verified
in the case of weak interaction by comparing with numerical simulation. The
velocity and the interchain interaction dependences of the lattice structure
are also investigated. It is shown that peculiar breaking of analyticity states
appear, which is characteristic to the two-chain model. The range of the
parameters in which the two-chain model is reduced to the Frenkel-Kontorova
