Persuasive Technology for Learning and Teaching – The EuroPLOT Project
The concept of persuasive design has demonstrated its benefits by changing human behavior in certain situations, but in the area of education and learning, this approach has rarely been used. To change this and to study the feasibility of persuasive technology in teaching and learning, the EuroPLOT project (PLOT = Persuasive Learning Objects and Technologies) has been funded 2010-2013 by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) in the Life-long Learning (LLL) programme. In this program two tools have been developed (PLOTMaker and PLOTLearner) which allow to create learning objects with inherently persuasive concepts embedded. These tools and the learning objects have been evaluated in four case studies: language learning (Ancient Hebrew), museum learning (Kaj Munk Museum, Denmark), chemical handling, and academic Business Computing. These case studies cover a wide range of different learning styles and learning groups, and the results obtained through the evaluation of these case studies show the wide range of success of persuasive learning. They also indicate the limitations and areas where improvements are required
Persuasive Technology for Learning in Business Context
"Persuasive Design is a relatively new concept which employs general principles of persuasion that can be implemented in persuasive technology. This concept has been introduced by BJ Fogg in 1998, who since then has further extended it to use computers for changing attitudes and behaviour. Such principles can be applied very well in learning and teaching: in traditional human-led learning, teachers always have employed persuasion as one of the elements of teaching. Persuasive technology moves these principles into the digital domain, by focusing on technology that inherently stimulates learners to learn more quickly and effectively. This is very relevant for the area of Business Management in several aspects: Consumer Behavior, Communications, Human Resource, Marketing & Advertising, Organisational Behavior & Leadership. The persuasive principles identified by BJ Fogg are: reduction, tunnelling, tailoring, suggestion, self-monitoring, surveillance, conditioning, simulation, social signals. Also relevant is the concept of KAIROS, which means the just-in-time, at the right place provision of information/stimulus. In the EuroPLOT project (2010-2013) we have developed persuasive learning objects and tools (PLOTs) in which we have applied persuasive designs and principles. In this context, we have developed a pedagogical framework for active engagement, based on persuasive design in which the principles of persuasive learning have been formalised in a 6-step guide for persuasive learning. These principles have been embedded in two tools – PLOTmaker and PLOTLearner – which have been developed for creating persuasive learning objects. The tools provide specific capability for implementing persuasive principles at the very beginning of the design of learning objects. The feasibility of employing persuasive learning concepts with these tools has been investigated in four different case studies with groups of teachers and learners from realms with distinctly different teaching and learning practices: Business Computing, language learning, museum learning, and chemical substance handling. These case studies have involved the following learner target groups: school children, university students, tertiary students, vocational learners and adult learners. With regards to the learning context, they address archive-based learning, industrial training, and academic teaching. Alltogether, these case studies include participants from Sweden, Africa (Madagascar), Denmark, Czech Republic, and UK. One of the outcomes of this investigation was that one cannot apply a common set of persuasive designs that would be valid for general use in all situations: on the contrary, the persuasive principles are very specific to learning contexts and therefore must be specifically tailored for each situation. Two of these case studies have a direct relevance to education in the realm of Business Management: Business Computing and language learning (for International Business). In this paper we will present the first results from the evaluation of persuasive technology driven learning in these two relevant areas.
Demonstration of PLOTs from the EuroPLOT project
The EuroPLOT project (2010-2013) has been funded to explore the concept of persuasive design for learning and teaching. It has developed Persuasive Learn-ing Objects and Technologies (PLOTs), manifested in two tools and a set of learning objects that have been tested and evaluated in four different case studies. These PLOTs will be shown in this demonstration, and the participants can try them out and experience for themselves the impact of persuasive technology that is embedded in these PLOTs. This will be one authoring tool (PLOTMaker) and one delivery tool (PLOTLearner). Furthermore, there will be learning objects shown which have been developed for those four different case studies. All of these PLOTs have already been tested and evaluated during case studies with real learners
Behavioral Inhibition as a Risk Factor for the Development of Childhood Anxiety Disorders: A Longitudinal Study
This longitudinal study examined the additive and interactive effects of behavioral inhibition and a wide range of other vulnerability factors in the development of anxiety problems in youths. A sample of 261 children, aged 5 to 8 years, 124 behaviorally inhibited and 137 control children, were followed during a 3-year period. Assessments took place on three occasions to measure children’s level of behavioral inhibition, anxiety disorder symptoms, other psychopathological symptoms, and a number of other vulnerability factors such as insecure attachment, negative parenting styles, adverse life events, and parental anxiety. Results obtained with Structural Equation Modeling indicated that behavioral inhibition primarily acted as a specific risk factor for the development of social anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, the longitudinal model showed additive as well as interactive effects for various vulnerability factors on the development of anxiety symptoms. That is, main effects of anxious rearing and parental trait anxiety were found, whereas behavioral inhibition and attachment had an interactive effect on anxiety symptomatology. Moreover, behavioral inhibition itself was also influenced by some of the vulnerability factors. These results provide support for dynamic, multifactorial models for the etiology of child anxiety problems
Geochemical comparison of K-T boundaries from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres
Closely spaced (cm-scale) traverses through the K-T boundary at Stevns Klint (Denmark), Woodside Creek (New Zealand) and a new Southern Hemisphere site at Richards Bay (South Africa) were subjected to trace element and isotopic (C, O, Sr) investigation. Intercomparison between these data-sets, and correlation with the broad K-T database available in the literature, indicate that the chemistry of the boundary clays is not globally constant. Variations are more common than similarities, both of absolute concentrations, and interelement ratios. For example, the chondrite normalized platinum-group elements (PGE) patterns of Stevns Klint are not like those of Woodside Creek, with the Pt/Os ratios showing the biggest variation. These differences in PGE patterns are difficult to explain by secondary alteration of a layer that was originally chemically homogeneous, especially for elements of such dubious crustal mobility as Os and Ir. The data also show that enhanced PGE concentrations, with similar trends to those of the boundary layers, occur in the Cretaceous sediments below the actual boundary at Stevns Klint and all three the New Zealand localities. This confirms the observations of others that the geochemistry of the boundary layers apparently does not record a unique component. It is suggested that terrestrial processes, eg. an extended period of Late Cretaceous volcanism can offer a satisfactory explanation for the features of the K-T geochemical anomaly. Such models would probably be more consistent with the observed stepwise, or gradual, palaeontological changes across this boundary, than the instant catastrophe predicated by the impact theory
Codeword stabilized quantum codes: algorithm and structure
The codeword stabilized ("CWS") quantum codes formalism presents a unifying
approach to both additive and nonadditive quantum error-correcting codes
(arXiv:0708.1021). This formalism reduces the problem of constructing such
quantum codes to finding a binary classical code correcting an error pattern
induced by a graph state. Finding such a classical code can be very difficult.
Here, we consider an algorithm which maps the search for CWS codes to a problem
of identifying maximum cliques in a graph. While solving this problem is in
general very hard, we prove three structure theorems which reduce the search
space, specifying certain admissible and optimal ((n,K,d)) additive codes. In
particular, we find there does not exist any ((7,3,3)) CWS code though the
linear programming bound does not rule it out. The complexity of the CWS search
algorithm is compared with the contrasting method introduced by Aggarwal and

N II 5668-5712, a New Class of Spectral Features in Eta Carinae
We report on the N II 5668-5712 emission and absorption lines in the spectrum
of Eta Carinae. Spectral lines of the stellar wind regions can be classified
into four physically distinct categories: 1) low-excitation emission such as H
I and Fe II, 2) higher excitation He I features, 3) the N II lines discussed in
this paper, and 4) He II emission. These categories have different combinations
of radial velocity behavior, excitation processes, and dependences on the
secondary star. The N II lines are the only known features that originate in
"normal" undisturbed zones of the primary wind but depend primarily on the
location of the hot secondary star. N II probably excludes some proposed
models, such as those where He I lines originate in the secondary star's wind

Detection of high-velocity material from the wind-wind collision zone of Eta Carinae across the 2009.0 periastron passage
We report near-IR spectroscopic observations of the Eta Carinae massive
binary system during 2008-2009 using VLT/CRIRES. We detect a strong, broad
absorption wing in He I 10833 extending up to -1900 km/s across the 2009.0
spectroscopic event. Archival HST/STIS ultraviolet and optical data shows a
similar high-velocity absorption (up to -2100 km/s) in the UV resonance lines
of Si IV 1394, 1403 across the 2003.5 event. UV lines from low-ionization
species, such as Si II 1527, 1533 and C II 1334, 1335, show absorption up to
-1200 km/s, indicating that the absorption with v from -1200 to -2100 km/s
originates in a region markedly faster and more ionized than the nominal wind
of the primary star. Observations obtained at the OPD/LNA during the last 4
spectroscopic cycles (1989-2009) also display high-velocity absorption in He I
10833 during periastron. Based on the OPD/LNA dataset, we determine that
material with v < -900 km/s is present in the phase range 0.976 < phi < 1.023
of the spectroscopic cycle, but absent in spectra taken at phi < 0.947 and phi
> 1.049. Therefore, we constrain the duration of the high-velocity absorption
to be 95 to 206 days (or 0.047 to 0.102 in phase). We suggest that the
high-velocity absorption originates from shocked gas in the wind-wind collision
zone, at distances of 15 to 45 AU in the line-of-sight to the primary star.
Using 3-D hydrodynamical simulations of the wind-wind collision zone, we find
that the dense high-velocity gas is in the line-of-sight to the primary star
only if the binary system is oriented in the sky so that the companion is
behind the primary star during periastron, corresponding to a longitude of
periastron of omega ~ 240 to 270 degrees. We study a possible tilt of the
orbital plane relative to the Homunculus equatorial plane and conclude that our
data are broadly consistent with orbital inclinations in the range i=40 to 60

Electron scattering on circular symmetric magnetic profiles in a two-dimensional electron gas
The quasi-bound and scattered states in a 2DEG subjected to a circular
symmetric steplike magnetic profile with zero average magnetic field are
studied. We calculate the effect of a random distribution of such identical
profiles on the transport properties of a 2DEG. We show that a nonzero Hall
resistance can be obtained, although , and that in some cases it
can even change sign as function of the Fermi energy or the magnetic field
strength. The Hall and magnetoresistance show pronounced resonances apart from
the Landau states of the inner core, corresponding to the so-called quasi-bound
