LISA For Cosmologists: Calculating The Signal-To-Noise Ratio For Stochastic And Deterministic Sources
We present the steps to forecast the sensitivity of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to both a stochastic gravitational wave background and deterministic wave sources. We show how to use these expressions to estimate the precision with which LISA can determine parameters associated with these sources. Tools are included to enable easy calculation of the signal-to-noise ratio and draw sensitivity curves. Benchmark values are given for easy comparison and checking of methods in the case of three worked examples. The first benchmark is the threshold stochastic gravitational wave background ΩGWh2 that LISA can observe. The second is the signal-to-noise ratio that LISA would observe for a binary black hole system identical to GW150914, radiating four years before merger. The third is the case of a monotone source, such as a binary that is far from merger
High-temperature, high-pressure optical cell
The invention is an optical cell for containment of chemicals under conditions of high temperature and high pressure. The cell is formed of a vitreous silica tube, two optical windows comprising a vitreous silica rod inserted into the ends of a tube, and fused into position in the tube ends. Windows are spaced apart to form a cavity enclosed by the tube and the windows. A hole is drilled radially through the tube and into the cavity. Another vitreous silica tube is fused to the silica tube around the hole to form the stem, which is perpendicular to the long axis of the tube. The open end of the stem is used to load chemicals into the cavity. Then the stem may be sealed, and if desired, it may be shortened in order to reduce the volume of the cavity, which extends into the stem

The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey VIII : Discovery of an Isolated Dwarf Galaxy in the Local Volume
The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) has detected a nearby HI source
at a heliocentric velocity of +363 km/s . The object was detected through its
neutral hydrogen emission and has an obvious possible optical counterpart in
Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data (though it does not have an optical
redshift measurement). We discuss three possible scenarios for the object : 1)
It is within the Local Group, in which case its HI properties are comparable
with recently discovered ultra-compact high velocity clouds; 2) It is just
behind the Local Group, in which case its optical characteristics are similar
to the newly discovered Leo P galaxy; 3) It is a blue compact dwarf galaxy
within the local volume but not associated with the Local Group. We find the
third possibility to be the most likely, based on distance estimates from the

Leveraging Contextual Cues for Generating Basketball Highlights
The massive growth of sports videos has resulted in a need for automatic
generation of sports highlights that are comparable in quality to the
hand-edited highlights produced by broadcasters such as ESPN. Unlike previous
works that mostly use audio-visual cues derived from the video, we propose an
approach that additionally leverages contextual cues derived from the
environment that the game is being played in. The contextual cues provide
information about the excitement levels in the game, which can be ranked and
selected to automatically produce high-quality basketball highlights. We
introduce a new dataset of 25 NCAA games along with their play-by-play stats
and the ground-truth excitement data for each basket. We explore the
informativeness of five different cues derived from the video and from the
environment through user studies. Our experiments show that for our study
participants, the highlights produced by our system are comparable to the ones

On transient dynamics, off-equilibrium behaviour and identification in blended multiple model structures
The use of multiple-model techniques has been reported in a variety of control and signal processing applications. However, several theoretical analyses have recently appeared which outline fundamental limitations of these techniques in certain domains of application. In particular, the identifiability and interpretability of local linear model parameters in transient operating regimes is shown to be limited. Some modifications to the basic paradigm are suggested which overcome a number of problems. As an alternative to parametric identification of blended multiple model structures, nonparametric Gaussian process priors are suggested as a means of providing local models, and the results compared to a multiple-model approach in a Monte Carlo simulation on some simulated vehicle dynamics data
Data acquisition for measuring the wind on Venus from Pioneer Venus
The data acquisition and processing technqiues used in the Pioneer Venus differential long baseline interferometry experiment are discribed. The experiment was designed to measure the motion in three dimensions of the Pioneer probes during their fall to the surface of Venus, using a combination of Doppler and long baseline ratio interferometric methods. The design of the experiment and the equipment and software techniques that were developed specially for this experiment are also described
