    New geometry for planar UV written refractive index sensors

    We shall present some of our recent results from our work on UV written planar waveguide refractive index sensors. Refractive index of an analyte is measured through the perturbation of an optical mode, interrogation of the modal index is achieved via the reflected spectra from a Bragg grating defined in the same process as the channel waveguide. Here we introduce a new geometry which embraces the benefits of planar technology to realise new integrated devices. The geometry allows several different sensors to be defined on the same substrate each offering complementary information. Such information may include index as a function of penetration depth for surface binding analytes, interrogation wavelength for dispersion analysis, enhanced sensitivity in specific index ranges and temperature compensation. We shall also outline the inherent fabrication advantages and device feature benefits, including a reduction in return loss, spectral artefacts and a suggested reduction in stress induced birefringence. The silica sensing surface opposed to gold used in SPR devices opens new avenues to exploit surface binding. With a marked reduction in complexity and cost these devices may have significant impact in future sensor markets

    Magnetic reconnection in Saturn's magnetotail: a comprehensive magnetic field survey

    Reconnection within planetary magnetotails is responsible for locally energizing particles and changing the magnetic topology. Its role in terms of global magnetospheric dynamics can involve changing the mass and flux content of the magnetosphere. We have identified reconnection related events in spacecraft magnetometer data recorded during Cassini's exploration of Saturn's magnetotail. The events are identified from deflections in the north-south component of the magnetic field, significant above a background level. Data were selected to provide full tail coverage, encompassing the dawn and dusk flanks as well as the deepest midnight orbits. Overall 2094 reconnection related events were identified, with an average rate of 5.0 events per day. The majority of events occur in clusters (within 3 h of other events). We examine changes in this rate in terms of local time and latitude coverage, taking seasonal effects into account. The observed reconnection rate peaks postmidnight with more infrequent but steady loss seen on the dusk flank. We estimate the mass loss from the event catalog and find it to be insufficient to balance the input from the moon Enceladus. Several reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. The reconnection X line location appears to be highly variable, though a statistical separation between events tailward and planetward of the X line is observed at a radial distance of between 20 and 30RS downtail. The small sample size at dawn prevents comprehensive statistical comparison with the dusk flank observations in terms of flux closure

    NPV is a static measure of project value which does not discriminate between levels of internal and external risk in project valuation. Due to current investment project?s characteristics, a much more complex model is needed: one that includes the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with variables subject to uncertainty (price, costs, exchange rates, grade and tonnage of the deposits, cut off grade, among many others). Few of these variables present any correlation or can be treated uniformly. In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) arose more than a decade ago, as a mainly theoretical model with the potential for simultaneous calculation of the risk associated with such variables. This paper reviews the literature regarding the application of Real Options Valuation in mining, noting the prior focus on external risks, and presents a case study where ROV is applied to quantify risk associated to mine planning

The additional insights to the practitioner provided by partial correlations for detecting a single-factor model are discussed. The parameter space for the partial correlations is presented, as are the patterns of signs in a matrix containing the partial correlations that are not compatible with a single-factor model

    Diversity in the structures and ligand binding sites of nematode fatty acid and retinol binding proteins revealed by Na-FAR-1 from Necator americanus

    Fatty acid and retinol binding proteins (FARs) comprise a family of unusual α-helix rich lipid binding proteins found exclusively in nematodes. They are secreted into host tissues by parasites of plants, animals and humans. The structure of a FAR protein from the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is available, but this protein (Ce-FAR-7) is from a subfamily of FARs that does not appear to be important at the host-parasite interface. We have therefore examined Na-FAR-1 from the blood-feeding intestinal parasite of humans, Necator americanus . The three dimensional structure of Na-FAR-1 in its ligand-free and ligand-bound forms, determined by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and X-ray crystallography, respectively, reveals an a-helical fold similar to Ce-FAR-7, but Na-FAR-1 possesses a larger and more complex internal ligand binding cavity and an additional C-terminal a-helix. Titration of apo -Na-FAR-1 with oleic acid, analysed by NMR chemical shift perturbation, reveals that at least four distinct protein:ligand complexes can be formed. Na-FAR-1, and possibly other FARs, may have a wider repertoire for hydrophobic ligand binding, as confirmed here by our finding that a range of neutral and polar lipids co-purify with the bacterial recombinant protein. Finally, we show by immunohistochemistry that Na-FAR-1 is present in adult worms with a tissue distribution indicative of possible roles in nutrient acquisition by the parasite and in reproduction in the male

    Relationships between production and product traits in subpopulations of Bonsmara and Nguni cattle

    Ninety bull calves of five Bonsmara strains, viz. Edelheer (E), T-49 (T), Wesselsvlei (W), Roodebos (R) and Belmont Red (BR), and two Nguni sub-populations, viz. Bartlow (B) and non-Bartlow (NB), were fattened under intensive feeding conditions and serially slaughtered at four different slaughter weights. Phylogenetic relationships between the five Bonsmara strains and between the two Nguni subpopulations were determined by means of blood typing. Growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality characteristics were compared between the sub-populations of each breed. Genetic distances between the Bonsmara animals confirmed the existence of five genetic subpopulations with variation in genetic distances between them. The genetic distance between the two Nguni subpopulations was very small, indicating genetic similarity. Means for production and product characteristics were adjusted for mean subcutaneous fat percentage by means of analysis of covariance. T gained weight faster and more efficiently on a live and carcass weight basis than the other Bonsmara groups, while B gained carcass and muscle weight more efficiently than NB. T had proportionally more meat in the high-priced cuts of the carcass than W. Muscle of the W line had a higher ageing potential (measured as myofibrillar fragmentation; MFI) than T, resulting in higher tenderness scores for W. Similarly, B had higher MFI for muscle aged for one or seven days, coupled with more tender meat than NB. Pairwise correlations between growth and muscle characteristics indicated that fast growing animals tend to produce less tender meat.     Long-Wavelength Instability in Surface-Tension-Driven Benard Convection

    Laboratory studies reveal a deformational instability that leads to a drained region (dry spot) in an initially flat liquid layer (with a free upper surface) heated uniformly from below. This long-wavelength instability supplants hexagonal convection cells as the primary instability in viscous liquid layers that are sufficiently thin or are in microgravity. The instability occurs at a temperature gradient 34% smaller than predicted by linear stability theory.
