Studies on Nucleic Acid Reassociation Kinetics: Retarded Rate of Hybridization of RNA with Excess DNA
The rate of reaction of excess double-stranded bacteriophage phi X174 and plasmid RSF2124 DNA drivers with enzymatically synthesized asymmetric RNA tracers was measured. Other reactions were carried out with excess Escherichia coli DNA and E. coli RNA labeled in vivo. RNA and DNA fragment lengths were held approximately equal. For each case it was shown that in DNA excess the rate constant for RNA· DNA hybridization is 3- to 4.5-fold lower than that of the renaturation rate constant for the driver DNA. This retardation was also observed in pseudo-first-order hybridization reactions driven by excess strand-separated RSF2124 DNA. It was concluded that the rate constant for RNA· DNA hybridization depends partially on which species is in excess
Stem Cell Therapy for Autism
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental conditions whose incidence is reaching epidemic proportions, afflicting approximately 1 in 166 children. Autistic disorder, or autism is the most common form of ASD. Although several neurophysiological alterations have been associated with autism, immune abnormalities and neural hypoperfusion appear to be broadly consistent. These appear to be causative since correlation of altered inflammatory responses, and hypoperfusion with symptology is reported. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are in late phases of clinical development for treatment of graft versus host disease and Crohn's Disease, two conditions of immune dysregulation. Cord blood CD34+ cells are known to be potent angiogenic stimulators, having demonstrated positive effects in not only peripheral ischemia, but also in models of cerebral ischemia. Additionally, anecdotal clinical cases have reported responses in autistic children receiving cord blood CD34+ cells. We propose the combined use of MSC and cord blood CD34+cells may be useful in the treatment of autism

Quality and speed in linear-scan register allocation
A linear-scan algorithm directs the global allocation of register candidates to registers based on a simple linear sweep over the program being compiled. This approach to register allocation makes sense for systems, such as those for dynamic compilation, where compilation speed is important. In contrast, most commercial and research optimizing compilers rely on a graph-coloring approach to global register allocation. In this paper, we compare the performance of a linear-scan method against a modern graph-coloring method. We implement both register allocators within the Machine SUIF extension of the Stanford SUIF compiler system. Experimental results show that linear scan is much faster than coloring on benchmarks with large numbers of register candidates. We also describe improvements to the linear-scan approach that do not change its linear character, but allow it to produce code of a quality near to that produced by graph coloring.Engineering and Applied Science
Changing healthcare professionals' behaviors to eliminate disparities in healthcare: What do we know? How might we proceed?
The patient-healthcare provider communication process--particularly the provider's cultural competency--is increasingly recognized as a key to reducing racial/ethnic disparities in health and healthcare utilization. A working group was formed by the Office of Minority Health, Department of Health and Human Services to identify strategies for improving healthcare providers' cultural competency. This expert panel, one of several working groups called together to explore methods of reducing healthcare disparities, was comprised of individuals from academic medical centers and health professional organizations who were nationally recognized as having expertise in healthcare communication as it relates to diverse populations. During the 2-day conference, the panel identified, from personal experience and knowledge of the literature, key points of intervention and interventions most likely to improve the cross-cultural competency of healthcare providers. Proposed interventions included introduction of cultural competence education before, during, and after clinical training; implementation of certification and accreditation requirements in cross-cultural competence for practicing healthcare providers; use of culturally diverse governing boards for clinical practices; and active promotion of workforce cross-cultural diversity by healthcare organization administrators. For each intervention, methods for implementation were specified. On-going monitoring and evaluation of processes of care using race/ethnicity data were recommended to ensure the programs were functioning
EXCEDE Technology Development III: First Vacuum Tests
This paper is the third in the series on the technology development for the
EXCEDE (EXoplanetary Circumstellar Environments and Disk Explorer) mission
concept, which in 2011 was selected by NASA's Explorer program for technology
development (Category III). EXCEDE is a 0.7m space telescope concept designed
to achieve raw contrasts of 1e6 at an inner working angle of 1.2 l/D and 1e7 at
2 l/D and beyond. This will allow it to directly detect and spatially resolve
low surface brightness circumstellar debris disks as well as image giant
planets as close as in the habitable zones of their host stars. In addition to
doing fundamental science on debris disks, EXCEDE will also serve as a
technological and scientific precursor for any future exo-Earth imaging
mission. EXCEDE uses a Starlight Suppression System (SSS) based on the PIAA
coronagraph, enabling aggressive performance.
We report on our continuing progress of developing the SSS for EXCEDE, and in
particular (a) the reconfiguration of our system into a more flight-like
layout, with an upstream deformable mirror and an inverse PIAA system, as well
as a LOWFS, and (b) testing this system in a vacuum chamber, including IWA,
contrast, and stability performance. The results achieved so far are 2.9e-7
contrast between 1.2-2.0 l/D and 9.7e-8 contrast between 2.0-6.0 l/D in
monochromatic light; as well as 1.4e-6 between 2.0-6.0 l/D in a 10% band, all
with a PIAA coronagraph operating at an inner working angle of 1.2 l/D. This
constitutes better contrast than EXCEDE requirements (in those regions) in
monochromatic light, and progress towards requirements in broadband light. Even
though this technology development is primarily targeted towards EXCEDE, it is
also germane to any exoplanet direct imaging space-based telescopes because of
the many challenges common to different coronagraph architectures and mission

Muon Simulations for Super-Kamiokande, KamLAND and CHOOZ
Muon backgrounds at Super-Kamiokande, KamLAND and CHOOZ are calculated using
MUSIC. A modified version of the Gaisser sea level muon distribution and a
well-tested Monte Carlo integration method are introduced. Average muon energy,
flux and rate are tabulated. Plots of average energy and angular distributions
are given. Implications on muon tracker design for future experiments are
