    Mobile distributed authentication protocol

    Networks access control is a crucial topic and authentication is a pre-requisite of that process. Most existing authentication protocols (for example that used in the GSM mobile network) are centralised. Depending on a single entity is undesirable as it has security, trust and availability issues. This paper proposes a new protocol, GSM-secure network access protocol (G-SNAP). In G-SNAP, the authentication procedure and network access control is handled by a quorum of authentication centres. The advantages of the novel protocol include increased security, availability and distributed trust

    The PL calibration for Milky Way Cepheids and its implications for the distance scale

    The rationale behind recent calibrations of the Cepheid PL relation using the Wesenheit formulation is reviewed and reanalyzed, and it is shown that recent conclusions regarding a possible change in slope of the PL relation for short-period and long-period Cepheids are tied to a pathological distribution of HST calibrators within the instability strip. A recalibration of the period-luminosity relation is obtained using Galactic Cepheids in open clusters and groups, the resulting relationship, described by log L/L_sun = 2.415(+-0.035) + 1.148(+-0.044)log P, exhibiting only the moderate scatter expected from color spread within the instability strip. The relationship is confirmed by Cepheids with HST parallaxes, although without the need for Lutz-Kelker corrections, and in general by Cepheids with revised Hipparcos parallaxes, albeit with concerns about the cited precisions of the latter. A Wesenheit formulation of Wv = -2.259(+-0.083) - 4.185(+-0.103)log P for Galactic Cepheids is tested successfully using Cepheids in the inner regions of the galaxy NGC 4258, confirming the independent geometrical distance established for the galaxy from OH masers. Differences between the extinction properties of interstellar and extragalactic dust may yet play an important role in the further calibration of the Cepheid PL relation and its application to the extragalactic distance scale.Comment: Accepted for Publication (Astrophysics & Space Science

    CanHELP: a computer program to assist in designing on-farm erosion control practices

    Non-Peer ReviewedCanHELP is a computer program designed to assist in the selection of site-specific erosion control practices. The program uses the Wind Erosion Equation and the Universal Soil Loss Equation. Realistic use of CanHELP requires that the user select input variables carefully and have a good working knowledge of the erosion equations. CanHELP consists of three main components; a soils database, and separate routines to estimate both wind and water erosion. The soils database stores information on the input variables for the erosion equations. The wind erosion routine estimates the amount of crop residue on the ground surface during the critical wind erosion period and calculates potential wind erosion. Average erosion from hillslopes is estimated using the water erosion routine. Graphs and on-screen calculations may then be used to select suitable conservation practices. CanHELP will be distributed by PFRA once documentation is complete

    Comparative image analysis approaches to assess ecological effects of macroalgal removal on inshore reefs of Magnetic Island, Australia

    Macroalgae removal is a proposed management option in the GBR to reverse declines in inshore coral reef health. Automated image analysis (AIA) is a valuable tool to assess benthic community assemblages. This study compared the accuracy of benthic community assemblages assessed through the AIA program CoralNet to manual image analysis. The ecological effect of macroalgae removal on benthic community composition was also investigated on established permanent quadrats (5x5 m) for reefs at Florence and Arthur Bay, Magnetic Island. Control and treatment quadrats (n=3 respectively) were photographed before and after macroalgae removal over 6 months. The results obtained by AIA and manual approaches were consistent, with macroalgae cover is approximately 77%-87% in all quadrats before macroalgal removal. Through the monitoring period, a small increase in coral cover in the macroalgal removal quadrats was observed in Florence and Arthur Bay (an increase of 1.8% and 0.1%, respectively). CoralNet was demonstrated to be robust for assessing reef benthic cover with no significant difference in recorded benthic categories when compared to the manual approach. CoralNet was accurate for identifying broad benthic categories, but less effective than manual image analyses for lower taxonomic categories (i.e., genus or species level)

This spotlight on applications outlines the key benefits of this coating technology and summarizes progress made to date, with attention focused on varied efforts to control the crystallization and uniformity of the perovskite layer. The emerging understanding of processes required to create smooth, dense spray-cast perovskite films has recently led to the demonstration of fully spray-cast PSCs with a power conversion efficiency of 19.4%

    Feedback methods for inverse simulation of dynamic models for engineering systems applications

    Inverse simulation is a form of inverse modelling in which computer simulation methods are used to find the time histories of input variables that, for a given model, match a set of required output responses. Conventional inverse simulation methods for dynamic models are computationally intensive and can present difficulties for high-speed applications. This paper includes a review of established methods of inverse simulation,giving some emphasis to iterative techniques that were first developed for aeronautical applications. It goes on to discuss the application of a different approach which is based on feedback principles. This feedback method is suitable for a wide range of linear and nonlinear dynamic models and involves two distinct stages. The first stage involves design of a feedback loop around the given simulation model and, in the second stage, that closed-loop system is used for inversion of the model. Issues of robustness within closed-loop systems used in inverse simulation are not significant as there are no plant uncertainties or external disturbances. Thus the process is simpler than that required for the development of a control system of equivalent complexity. Engineering applications of this feedback approach to inverse simulation are described through case studies that put particular emphasis on nonlinear and multi-input multi-output models

    Modelling Deformations in Car Crash animation

    In this paper, we present a prototype of a deformation engine to efficiently model and render the damaged structure of vehicles in crash scenarios. We introduce a novel system architecture to accelerate the computation, which is traditionally an extremely expensive task. We alter a rigid body simulator to predict trajectories of cars during a collision and formulate a correction procedure to estimate the deformations of the collapsed car structures within the contact area. Non-linear deformations are solved based on the principle of energy conservation. Large plastic deformations resulting from collisions are modelled as a weighted combination of deformation examples of beams which can be produced using classical mechanics

    Spray-cast multilayer perovskite solar cells with an active-area of 1.5 cm(2)

    We utilise spray-coating under ambient conditions to sequentially deposit compact-TiO2, mesoporous-TiO2, CH3NH3PbI(3-x)Clx perovskite and doped spiro-OMeTAD layers, creating a mesoporous standard architecture perovskite solar cell (PSC). The devices created had an average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.2% and a peak PCE of 10.2%; values that compare favourably with control-devices fabricated by spin-casting that had an average efficiency of 11.4%. We show that our process can be used to create devices having an active-area of 1.5 cm(2) having an independently verified efficiency of 6.6%. This work demonstrates the versatility of spray-coating as well as its potential as a method of manufacturing low-cost, large-area, efficient perovskite devices
