    Simple and accurate modelling of the gravitational potential produced by thick and thin exponential discs

    We present accurate models of the gravitational potential produced by a radially exponential disc mass distribution. The models are produced by combining three separate Miyamotoā€“Nagai discs. Such models have been used previously to model the disc of the Milky Way, but here we extend this framework to allow its application to discs of any mass, scalelength, and a wide range of thickness from infinitely thin to near spherical (ellipticities from 0 to 0.9). The models have the advantage of simplicity of implementation, and we expect faster run speeds over a double exponential disc treatment. The potentials are fully analytical, and differentiable at all points. The mass distribution of our models deviates from the radial mass distribution of a pure exponential disc by <0.4ā€‰perā€‰cent out to 4 disc scalelengths, and <1.9ā€‰perā€‰cent out to 10 disc scalelengths. We tabulate fitting parameters which facilitate construction of exponential discs for any scalelength, and a wide range of disc thickness (a user-friendly, web-based interface is also available). Our recipe is well suited for numerical modelling of the tidal effects of a giant disc galaxy on star clusters or dwarf galaxies.     Wind-driven transport occurs on nearly all of the world's continental shelves. A workshop, open to all interested scientists, was held in Portland, Oregon, on July 14-16, 1993, to assess the need for a major interdisciplinary study, and to begin defining the relevant questions and approaches. Specific questions were posed in the areas of air-sea feedback, sources and sinks of chemicals in the euphotic zone, plankton distributions and benthic exchanges. The consensus of the entire workshop was that a CoOP study of wind-drven transport processes should be made and should take place over the continental margin adjacent to the U.S. west coast. The central question to be addressed is: What processes control the cross-margin transport of biological, chemical and geological materials in a strongly wind-driven system? Some recommendations were made for locations and measurement techniques to be used in the envisioned two-year field program.Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE92-24824

    DEVELOPMENT OF A TL-3 F-SHAPE TEMPORARY CONCRETE MEDIAN BARRIER

    A temporary concrete median barrier (CMB) was designed and tested for compliance under the Test Level 3 (TL-3) guidelines specified in the Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features, National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report No. 350. The barrier is built to the new metric standards and has a traditional pin and loop configuration for interconnection. The objective of this research project was to develop and evaluate a standardized, temporary concrete barrier design while addressing the concerns for safety, economy, structural integrity, constructability, ease of installation, and maintenance. The resulting F-shape barrier segment is 3,800-mm long, a length that reduced the number of connections while limiting the weight of the barriers to ease handling. Full-scale crash testing demonstrated several critical design features. First, the connections need to be tight initially as practicable to limit deformation and rotation of the barriers,. Secondly, the pin needs to restrain the longitudinal barrier forces. Full-scale compliance testing of the final design demonstrated that the barrier was capable of successfully redirecting the 2000-kg vehicle. The vehicle demonstrated significant roll after contact with the barrier, which is evidenced in a majority of other concrete barrier tests. This barrier provides economical work zone protection applicable in a variety of situations, where TL-3 test criteria is warranted

    Investigations And Management Of Epizootic Plague At Ice House Reservoir, Eldorado National Forest, California, 1994 And 1995

    The occurrence of plague (Yersinia pestic) at Ice House Reservoir in 1994 and 1995 was characteristic of widespread epizootics in high use recreational areas of California. Staff of the Vector-Borne Disease Section investigated these epizootics and found dense populations of plague susceptible California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi) with high numbers of fleas, primarily Diamanus montanus, the most important plague vector. This combination indicated a high risk of plague exposure to campground users. A non-fatal human case of plague, contracted at Mountain Camp II, was reported after the initial epizootic investigation. The patient\u27s exposure occurred prior to the reporting of the epizootic die-off among the California ground squirrels. The plague investigation included direct observations, animal trapping, and laboratory testing of rodent carcasses, sera, and fleas. Plague management and prevention included flea control with 2% Diazinon dust and rodent population reduction using 1% zinc phosphide treated grain. Evaluation of the 1994 applications indicated a successful reduction of rodents and fleas. However, the need for an ongoing management program was emphasized in 1995 when the plague epizootic continued. Intrusion of plague infected rodents and their fleas necessitated a 1995 treatment in the four campgrounds involved

    FcĪ³RIIb Balances Efficient Pathogen Clearance and the Cytokine-mediated Consequences of Sepsis

    The immune response to infection must be controlled to ensure it is optimal for defense while avoiding the consequences of excessive inflammation, which include fatal septic shock. Mice deficient in FcĪ³RIIb, an inhibitory immunoglobulin G Fc receptor, have enhanced immune responses. Therefore, we examined whether FcĪ³RIIb controls the response to Streptococcus pneumoniae. Macrophages from FcĪ³RIIb-deficient mice showed increased antibody-dependent phagocytosis of pneumococci in vitro, and consistent with this infected FcĪ³RIIb-deficient mice demonstrated increased bacterial clearance and survival. In contrast, previously immunized FcĪ³RIIb-deficient mice challenged with large inocula showed reduced survival. This correlated with increased production of the sepsis-associated cytokines tumor necrosis factor Ī± and interleukin 6. We propose that FcĪ³RIIb controls the balance between efficient pathogen clearance and the cytokine-mediated consequences of sepsis, with potential therapeutic implications

    This is the final report of the NASA Lewis SBIR Phase 2 Contract Number NAS3-25785, Multigrid Solution of Internal Flows Using Unstructured Solution Adaptive Meshes. The objective of this project, as described in the Statement of Work, is to develop and deliver to NASA a general three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code using unstructured solution-adaptive meshes for accuracy and multigrid techniques for convergence acceleration. The code will primarily be applied, but not necessarily limited, to high speed internal flows in turbomachinery
