    Raising the Bar on Training at Valparaiso University

    We have recently overhauled our IT training program that we offer our students, faculty and staff. In the past, the training program consisted of sessions about changes to campus systems or sessions related to very specific software uses such as mail merge or tables. Users can now expect that training will be more than software use and how-to’s. We have started looking at ways to enhance our clients overall use of campus technology. As we examined ways to better serve our campus community, we engaged in qualitative observations in many areas. We examined how our graduate students were using technology to collaborate. The faculty were observed by our training staff to see how they were employing campus technology in courses and integrating technology into their assignments given to students. We interviewed our Help Desk Student Consultants to see what they observed as major training goals throughout the campus based on their interactions with clients. Upon completion of our observations, we outline our course development plans for increasing technology integration and full use of our campus technology offerings to further our mission of enhancing learning, teaching and job function through technology. Our goal is to reach beyond the software functionality and take our clients to the apex of relevance and application

    Infection rates, parasitemia levels, and genetic diversity of hematozoa in New World waterfowl

    Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2014Blood parasites can limit the productivity of birds and increase the vulnerability of isolated and naïve populations to extinction. I examined 804 blood samples collected from 11 species of South American waterfowl to assess infection by Haemoproteus, Plasmodium and/or Leucocytozoon parasites. In addition, I strove to develop a new molecular tool to quickly and accurately determine relative parasitemia rates of Leucocytozoon parasites in avian blood. I used samples collected from waterfowl in interior Alaska (n = 105) to develop and optimize a real-time, quantitative PCR methodology using TaqMan fluorogenic probes. Molecular screening produced an apparent prevalence rate of 3.1% for hematozoa infections in South American waterfowl samples, and analysis of hematozoa mitochondrial DNA produced 12 distinct hematozoa haplotypes, four of which were identical to hematozoa lineages previously found infecting waterfowl in North America. Phylogenetic analyses of hematozoa DNA revealed close relationships between parasite lineages infecting waterfowl on both continents. Our qPCR assay showed high levels of sensitivity (91%) and specificity (100%) in detecting Leucocytozoon DNA from host blood when compared to results from a well-used nested-PCR protocol. Additionally, statistical results of a linear regression supported correlation between relative parasitemia estimates from our qPCR assay and greater numbers of parasites observed on blood smears (R2 = 0.67, P = 0.003)

    Field testing a novel high residence positioning system for monitoring the fine‐scale movements of aquatic organisms

    1. Acoustic telemetry is an important tool for studying the behaviour of aquatic organisms in the wild. 2. VEMCO high residence (HR) tags and receivers are a recent introduction in the field of acoustic telemetry and can be paired with existing algorithms (e.g. VEMCO positioning system [VPS]) to obtain high‐resolution two‐dimensional positioning data. 3. Here, we present results of the first documented field test of a VPS composed of HR receivers (hereafter, HR‐VPS). We performed a series of stationary and moving trials with HR tags (mean HR transmission period = 1.5 s) to evaluate the precision, accuracy and temporal capabilities of this positioning technology. In addition, we present a sample of data obtained for five European perch Perca fluviatilis implanted with HR tags (mean HR transmission period = 4 s) to illustrate how this technology can estimate the fine‐scale behaviour of aquatic animals. 4. Accuracy and precision estimates (median [5th–95th percentile]) of HR‐VPS positions for all stationary trials were 5.6 m (4.2–10.8 m) and 0.1 m (0.02–0.07 m), respectively, and depended on the location of tags within the receiver array. In moving tests, tracks generated by HR‐VPS closely mimicked those produced by a handheld GPS held over the tag, but these differed in location by an average of ≈9 m. 5. We found that estimates of animal speed and distance travelled for perch declined when positional data for acoustically tagged perch were thinned to mimic longer transmission periods. These data also revealed a trade‐off between capturing real nonlinear animal movements and the inclusion of positioning error. 6. Our results suggested that HR‐VPS can provide more representative estimates of movement metrics and offer an advancement for studying fine‐scale movements of aquatic organisms, but high‐precision survey techniques may be needed to test these systems

    “It’s Up to Us:” Factors Influencing the Perspectives and Practices of Instructors Working in an Out-of-School Swimming Program for Underserved Children and Youth

    The purposes of this study were (a) to describe the perspectives and practices of instructors working in an out-of-school swimming program (OSSP) for underserved children and youth and (b) to examine the factors which shaped these perspectives and practices. The theoretical framework employed was occupational socialization. Two female instructors participated in the study. Five qualitative techniques were used to collect data and standard interpretive techniques were employed to analyze them. Key findings were that the instructors were highly skilled and had well-developed sets of beliefs about teaching swimming and working with disadvantaged children and youth. These perspectives and practices were influenced by the interaction of the instructor\u27s acculturation, professional socialization, and organizational socialization. Implications for selecting instructors for OSSPs included asking potential instructors about their occupational socialization and hiring experienced physical educators. The study also suggested that instructor training includes a substantial teaching component and elements on technical pedagogy and teaching philosophy in the aquatic context

    Simulated performance of catch curve methods for estimating total mortality rate

    This document has been issued as VIMS Data Report 60 and provides additional simulation results for Smith et al. (2012) published in the North American Journal of Fisheries Management. Catch curve methods are a basic tool of population dynamics for estimating total mortality rate from age composition. There are a number of methodological issues which remain unresolved. Smith et al. (2012) attempts to provide guidelines on the use of these methods based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations. This report presents additional simulation results to supplement the results in the journal article. The estimators, evaluation criteria, simulation procedures, and conditions simulated are given in the journal article

    KSZ tomography and the bispectrum

    Several statistics have been proposed for measuring the kSZ effect by combining the small-scale CMB with galaxy surveys. We review five such statistics, and show that they are all mathematically equivalent to the optimal bispectrum estimator of type ggT\langle ggT \rangle. Reinterpreting these kSZ statistics as special cases of bispectrum estimation makes many aspects transparent, for example optimally weighting the estimator, or incorporating photometric redshift errors. We analyze the information content of the bispectrum and show that there are two observables: the small-scale galaxy-electron power spectrum Pge(kS)P_{ge}(k_S), and the large-scale galaxy-velocity power spectrum Pgv(k)P_{gv}(k). The cosmological constraining power of the kSZ arises from its sensitivity to fluctuations on large length scales, where its effective noise level can be much better than galaxy surveys.Comment: 39 page
