Has Kelantan grown faster than other states in Malaysia? A panel data analysis
Kelantan has been the poorest state in Malaysia for the past five decades. Despite the various Malaysian Development Plans for the past several decades, regional disparity between states remains in Malaysia. Thus, the objective of the present paper is to address the question whether Kelantan has been narrowing their income gap with other states in Malaysia. Using annual data for the period 1961 to 2003, our panel unit root test result suggest that (i) Kelantan converges towards Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Pahang, Perlis and Selangor.; (ii) Kelantan is catching-up to Johor, Melaka, Penang, Sabah, Terengganu and Wilayah Persekutuan; and (iii) Kelantan show divergence with Sarawak. In this respect, the government has an important role to play in enhancing growth by continuously providing stable economic environment for investment and other productive economic activities. Lubricant degradation, transport and the effect of extended oil drain intervals on piston assembly tribology
There are ever increasing demands on lubricant manufacturers to meet governmental legislation and customer needs by improving fuel economy, engine durability and exhaust system compatibility as shown by the introduction of GF4 and move towards GF5 specification oils. This has created an ever increasing need to understand how oil degrades in an engine and how this degraded oil affects piston assembly tribology. This review conference paper will give an overview of a collaborative project that has been undertaken to further enhance the understanding of how lubricant degrades in an operating engine, its transport through the engine and effect upon piston assembly tribology
Extraction and tribological investigation of top piston ring zone oil from a gasoline engine
With tightening emission regulations, increased expected fuel economy, and longer drain intervals impacting on lubricant formulation, greater understanding of how oil degrades in an automotive engine is becoming ever more important. Equally significant is the effect that this degraded lubricant has on the tribological operation of the engine, particularly its overall internal friction and component wear. In a previous paper, four tests to degrade oil in a single cylinder engine were reported [1]. These tests were set up such that the lubricating oil was degraded in the ring pack before returning to the sump, where it was sampled and chemical and rheological analysis undertaken. This paper reports the extension of this work using the same Hydra engine and describes how oil has additionally been extracted from the rear of the top piston ring during engine operation. This extracted oil has then been subjected to similar analysis as the sump oil samples in the previous tests, along with additional analysis to look at the tribological properties of the oil using tribometers. The results clearly show significant differences in the rheological, tribological, and chemical properties of the fresh oil and used sump oil samples when compared with the top ring zone (TRZ) oil samples, particularly the effect of load on the levels of volatiles present in the TRZ samples and their effect on traction and friction coefficient values during tribological testing
Barriers to the use of a diagnostic oral microbiology laboratory by general dental practitioners
OBJECTIVE: To identify barriers on the use of diagnostic microbiology facilities in general dental practice. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey using a postal questionnaire. SETTING: Primary/secondary care interface between the diagnostic oral microbiology laboratory, University of Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, Glasgow and dental practitioners within the surrounding health boards, 1998. SUBJECTS: All GDPs (797) within Argyll and Clyde, Ayrshire and Arran, Lanarkshire and Greater Glasgow Health Boards. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The responses were expressed as both absolute and relative frequencies. RESULTS: Responses were received from 430 (55%). The most frequent reason for failure to use the service was lack of information, with more than half of the respondents claiming to be unaware of the facility. Lack of request forms and sampling equipment were also viewed as barriers to using the service. CONCLUSIONS: The laboratory is failing to successfully communicate its role in addressing the growing burden of antibiotic resistance in the community and must be more proactive in encouraging appropriate use and increasing accessibility of the service to GDPs
Validation of a Rodent Model of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Using Oxaliplatin
poster abstractOxaliplatin (OXPL) is one of the most widely used and effective chemotherapeutic agents for colorectal cancer. However, the drug therapy is accompanied by severe dose-limiting off-target effects including tingling, burning pain and mechanical allodynia in the extremities of patients; together these symptomology is better known as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of CIPN are poorly understood and current therapeutic options only serve to alleviate the symptoms rather than prevent CIPN. To better understand mechanisms of OXPL-induced CIPN (OXPLN), we exposed adult female Sprague-Dawley rats to four intraperitoneal injections of vehicle or OXPL on alternative days. Behavioral results showed that thermal sensitivity failed to be affected by the OXPL. In contrast, the magnitude of mechanical allodynia increased such that the baseline withdrawal threshold for drug-treated animals was significantly lower than that for unprimed animals. Application of OXPL to afferent sensory neurons produced an increased amplitude and duration of compound action potentials that could be reversed with the voltage-gated sodium channel blocker, carbamazepine (CBZ).
Astroglial and microglial markers glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and Iba-1 were imaged to examine glial reactivity in OXPLN at day 14. Microglia were not activated following OXPL whereas astrocytes exhibited increased GFAP fluorescence which paralleled OXPLN. Activation of astrocytes was prevented by co-administration of CBZ. These observations suggest that CBZ may serve to diminish OXPLN in the patient population.

Nuclear astrophysics and the Daresbury Recoil Separator at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility
The Daresbury Recoil Separator (DRS) has been installed for nuclear astrophysics research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory`s Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility. It will be used for direct measurements of capture reactions on radioactive ions which occur in stellar explosions such as novae, supernovae and X-ray bursts. These measurements will be made in inverse kinematics with radioactive heavy ion beams incident on hydrogen and helium targets, and the DRS will separate the capture reaction recoils from the intense flux of beam particles. Details of the new DRS experimental equipment and preliminary results from the first commissioning experiments with stable beams are described, along with the plans for the first measurements with radioactive beams. Other astrophysics research efforts at ORNL--in theoretical astrophysics, nuclear astrophysics data evaluation, heavy element nucleosynthesis, theoretical atomic astrophysics, and atomic astrophysics data--are also briefly described
On the Potential of the Excluded Volume and Auto-Correlation as Neuromorphometric Descriptors
This work investigates at what degree two neuromorphometric measurements,
namely the autocorrelation and the excluded volume of a neuronal cell can
influence the characterization and classification of such a type of cells.
While the autocorrelation function presents good potential for quantifying the
dendrite-dendrite connectivity of cells in mosaic tilings, the excluded volume,
i.e. the amount of the surround space which is geometrically not accessible to
an axon or dendrite, provides a complementary characterization of the cell
connectivity. The potential of such approaches is illustrated with respect to
