Whole corn rations for finishing heifers: A comparison of self-fed and mixed supplement, with and without salt.

El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and annual malaria incidence in Southern Africa
We evaluated the association between annual malaria incidence and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) as measured by the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) in five countries in Southern Africa from 1988 to 1999. Below normal incidence of malaria synchronised with a negative SOI (El Niño) and above normal incidence with a positive SOI (La Niña), which lead to dry and wet weather conditions, respectively. In most countries there was a positive relationship between SOI and annual malaria incidence, especially where Anopheles arabiensis is a major vector. This mosquito breeds in temporary rain pools and is highly sensitive to fluctuations in weather conditions. South Africa and Swaziland have the most reliable data and showed the strongest associations, but the picture there may also be compounded by the moderating effect of other oscillatory systems in the Indian Ocean. The impact of ENSO also varies over time within countries, depending on existing malaria control efforts and response capacity. There remains a need for quantitative studies that at the same time consider both ENSO-driven climate anomalies and non-ENSO factors influencing epidemic risk potential to assess their relative importance in order to provide an empirical basis for malaria epidemic forecasting model
Delayed winter supplemental feeding and year-round mineral supplementation of beef cows on native range
Polled Hereford cows on native Flint Hills pasture not supplemented until February lost more weight from December to February, lost less from February to May, and were in poorer condition before calving than cows supplemented beginning in November. But calf survival, birth weight, and calf average daily gain were similar for both groups. Feeding cows a calcium, phosphorus, trace mineral mix did not improve any measure of cow or calf performance
Response of yearling steers to burning and fertilizing pasture and intensive early season stocking (bluestem pastures)
Nine pastures totaling 492 acres were summer grazed by yearling Hereford, Hereford-Angus cross, and Angus steers distributed equally by breed. Five pastures were burned April 22, 1975; four were not burned. Burned and nonburned pastures had 0, 40, or 80 lbs. of nitrogen per acre applied aerially April 29, 1975. Stocking rates were determined with herbage production data from experimental plots under similar treatments. Under equal fertilization and stocking ratios, burned and fertilized pastures produced as much or more average daily gain and more gain per acre than nonburned pastures. Fertilizing and heavier stocking tended to reduce average daily gains but increased gains per acre. Steers on the early season, intensely-stocked pasture gained the most per day (1.78 lbs.) and produced the highest gain per acre (70 lbs.)
Synthesis and characterization of Na03RhO206H2O - a semiconductor with a weak ferromagnetic component
We have prepared the oxyhydrate Na03RhO206H2O by extracting Na+ cations from
NaRhO2 and intercalating water molecules using an aqueous solution of Na2S2O8.
Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and
energy-dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX) reveal that a non-stoichiometric
Na03(H2O)06 network separates layers of edge-sharing RhO6 octahedra containing
Rh3+(4d6, S=0) and Rh4+ (4d5, S=1/2). The resistivities of NaRhO2 and
Na03RhO206H2O (T < 300) reveal insulating and semi-conducting behavior with
activation gaps of 134 meV and 7.8 meV, respectively. Both Na03RhO206H2O and
NaRhO2 show paramagnetism at room temperature, however, the sodium-deficient
sample exhibits simultaneously a weak but experimentally reproducible
ferromagnetic component. Both samples exhibit a temperature-independent Pauli
paramagnetism, for NaRhO2 at T > 50 K and for Na03RhO206H2O at T > 25 K. The
relative magnitudes of the temperature-independent magnetic susceptibilities,
that of the oxide sample being half that of the oxyhydrate, is consistent with
a higher density of thermally accessible electron states at the Fermi level in
the hydrated sample. At low temperatures the magnetic moments rise sharply,

Minerals in esophageal samples from steers on native bluestem pastures
This report summarizes monthly mineral contents of burned and control native bluestem pastures determined with samples from fisulated steers. Burning decreases calcium (Ca), potassium (K), and iron (Fe), and slightly decreases zinc (Zn). All minerals we studied were adequate for grazing cattle except that magnesium (Mg) and Potassium (K) appear to be borderline during winter months
Constraining Light Gravitino Mass from Cosmic Microwave Background
We investigate the possibilities of constraining the light gravitino mass
m_{3/2} from future cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys. A model with
light gravitino with the mass m_{3/2}<O(10) eV is of great interest since it is
free from the cosmological gravitino problem and, in addition, can be
compatible with many baryogenesis/leptogenesis scenarios such as the thermal
leptogenesis. We show that the lensing of CMB anisotropies can be a good probe
for m_{3/2} and obtain an expected constraint on m_{3/2} from precise
measurements of lensing potential in the future CMB surveys, such as the
PolarBeaR and CMBpol experiments. If the gravitino mass is m_{3/2}=1 eV, we
will obtain the constraint for the gravitino mass as m_{3/2} < 3.2 eV (95%
C.L.) for the case with Planck+PolarBeaR combined and
m_{3/2}=1.04^{+0.22}_{-0.26} eV (68% C.L.) for CMBpol. The issue of Bayesian

Gyrations: The Missing Link Between Classical Mechanics with its Underlying Euclidean Geometry and Relativistic Mechanics with its Underlying Hyperbolic Geometry
Being neither commutative nor associative, Einstein velocity addition of
relativistically admissible velocities gives rise to gyrations. Gyrations, in
turn, measure the extent to which Einstein addition deviates from commutativity
and from associativity. Gyrations are geometric automorphisms abstracted from
the relativistic mechanical effect known as Thomas precession
Arithmetical properties of Multiple Ramanujan sums
In the present paper, we introduce a multiple Ramanujan sum for arithmetic
functions, which gives a multivariable extension of the generalized Ramanujan
sum studied by D. R. Anderson and T. M. Apostol. We then find fundamental
arithmetic properties of the multiple Ramanujan sum and study several types of
Dirichlet series involving the multiple Ramanujan sum. As an application, we
evaluate higher-dimensional determinants of higher-dimensional matrices, the
entries of which are given by values of the multiple Ramanujan sum.Comment: 19 page
