Ranginui Walker\u27s history of the Maori struggles for tino rangatiratanga (self-determination) was first published during New Zealand’s sesquicentennial year. The 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi provoked intense public debates around issues of nationhood and the place of the Treaty of in managing contemporary relationships between Maori communities and the Crown

Successful management of cesarean scar pregnancy complicated by an arteriovenous malformation

    Get PDF
Background: Cesarean scar ectopic pregnancies are rare, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 2,000 pregnancies. The trauma of a cesarean section and a subsequent cesarean scar pregnancy can lead to the formation of an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The resulting intractable bleeding is difficult to manage and can result in an emergent surgical intervention that could jeopardize a female's ability to become pregnant in the future

Indigenous identities and the politics of authenticity

The very question of Indigenous authenticity, as Jeffrey Sissons reminds us, ‘‘…has deep roots within colonial racism’’ (2005, 43). Racialisation and the practice of creating and imbuing racial categories with seemingly impermeable boundaries and indestructible meanings has, after all, underpinned a range of colonial practices from the systematic alienation of Indigenous land and resources to child abduction. Regimes of biological and cultural authenticity continue to shape state policies and practices that regulate the everyday lives of Indigenous people around the world. Indeed, in some contexts, expectations of Indigenous cultural purity or environmental naturalness exist alongside the imposition of varying degrees of blood quantum as criteria for citizenship, political recognition and access to resources and services

On the Effectiveness of Dry Film Lubricant Coatings in Reducing Automotive Valve Train Wear

    Get PDF
The effect of three dry lubricants on automotive valve train wear resistance was studied experimentally. Scuffing wear occurs as the cam slides across the lifter face where the rotating motion of the camshaft is converted into the linear motion necessary to drive the cylinder head valves. This scuffing is caused by localized microscopic bonding between the skidding surfaces. It can be minimized by using dry film lubricant coatings to increase the boundary lubrication depth adjacent to the contact area. To compare valve train wear resistance in the laboratory, rotating cam lobes coated with dry lubricants--parkerization, spray-applied graphite coating, and brush-applied molybdenum disulfide coating-were pressed against valve lifters that were constrained in a fixture. The brush-applied molybdenum disulfide coating was the most effective of the three tested lubricants in reducing scuffing wear

Police strategies to reduce illegal possession and carrying of firearms: effects on gun crime

    Get PDF
Criminal misuse of firearms is among the world’s most serious crime problems. Strategies to reduce gun violence include efforts to restrict the manufacture and sale of firearms, interrupt the illegal supply of guns, deter gun possession, reduce gun carrying in public places, toughen responses to illegal gun use, reduce demand for firearms, promote responsible ownership of guns, and address community conditions that foster gun crime. In this review, we examine research on the effectiveness of selected law enforcement strategies for reducing gun crime and gun violence. This review examines the impacts of police strategies to reduce illegal possession and carrying of firearms on gun crime. Examples include gun detection patrols in high-crime areas, enhanced surveillance of probationers and parolees, weapon reporting hotlines, consent searches, and other similar tactics

A Review of the Stratigraphy of the Ogallala Formation and Revision of Neogene (“Tertiary”) Nomenclature in Kansas

The member names for the Ogallala Formation (including the Valentine, Ash Hollow, and Kimball) in Kansas of Zeller (1968) are abandoned. The Ogallala Formation in Kansas includes strata of Miocene and earliest Pliocene age, revising earlier correlation to the Pliocene only (Zeller, 1968). The Kansas Geological Survey is abandoning use of the term "Tertiary," to be replaced by the term "Neogene." International stage boundaries for the Neogene have not been established in Kansas
