    Fitting in to the fast-paced evolution of marching band uniforms, Afterglow reimagines the traditional marching band uniform by experimenting with wearable technology, new silhouettes, and garment sustainability to create a theatrical band uniform inspired by the afterglow of the sunset. The sunset begins with pink hues infiltrating the light blue sky, and as the sun reaches the horizon, brilliant purples, pinks, yellows, and oranges glide across the sky. A frenzy of overlapping and intermingling hues soon takes over before giving way to a pink afterglow remaining in the dark sky. The sunset symbolizes the transition from day to night, revitalizing those who take the time to observe it. This look showcases the climax of the sunset, where the sun reaches the horizon and the bright colors take hold of the sky. Worn by female marchers, this uniform epitomizes the current innovation and theatrics in marching band shows

    14-01 Exploring the Equity Dimensions of US Bicycle Sharing Systems

    Research over the past several decades has made it increasingly clear that livable communities are inextricably linked with the provision of opportunities for active and/or non-motorized transportation; i.e., walking, cycling and their variants. An emerging phenomena that is working within the broader movement of active transportation is public bicycle sharing systems (BSS). Such systems have grown considerably in the US in recent years and, in some cases, are dramatically changing the ecology of urban transport. Alongside celebrations of the early successes of US BSS, have been criticisms that these systems have not been adequately integrated into lower-income communities; a pattern that mirrors (motorized) transportation injustices-both past and present-that have burdened lower-income while simultaneously advantaging middle to higher-income communities. And while diverse communities are embracing non-motorized transportation, there is valid concern that traditionally underserved populations will again be marginalized or unable to share in the full benefits of existing and future bicycle- and pedestrian-oriented infrastructure including BSS. This research explores the spatial arrangements and allocations of US BSS and examines the extent to which lower-income communities experience differential access to bike-sharing infrastructure. Spatial regression models are employed to examine the degree to which race, ethnicity and/or economic hardship explain variations in the distribution of bike-sharing stations

    High-Impact Practices in Anthropology: Creating a Bridge Between Liberal Arts and Neoliberal Values

    Neoliberal values are dramatically affecting higher education in the United States, with a focus on running these institutions as businesses and molding students into productive workers. This shift toward training and away from traditional liberal arts education at U.S. universities and colleges has occurred even as studies demonstrate that the ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving marketplace promotes long-term professional success. While neoliberalism and traditional liberal arts education are often seen as antithetical, we show how one anthropology program has combined these values into pedagogical practice through a select subset of high impact practices to improve academic outcomes for low achieving students. Student feedback shows that they value our approach as a positive feature of our major. This study finds that neoliberal skills-based training and academically rigorous liberal arts education are not mutually exclusive and, in conjunction, can lead to improved student outcomes

    Photoevaporation versus enrichment in the cradle of the Sun

    The presence of short-lived radioisotopes (SLRs) 26-Al and 60-Fe in the Solar system places constraints on the initial conditions of our planetary system. Most theories posit that the origin of 26-Al and 60-Fe is in the interiors of massive stars, and they are either delivered directly to the protosolar disc from the winds and supernovae of the massive stars, or indirectly via a sequential star formation event. However, massive stars that produce SLRs also emit photoionising far and extreme ultraviolet radiation, which can destroy the gas component of protoplanetary discs, possibly precluding the formation of gas giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn. Here, we perfom N-body simulations of star-forming regions and determine whether discs that are enriched in SLRs can retain enough gas to form Jovian planets. We find that discs are enriched and survive the photoionising radiation only when the dust radius of the disc is fixed and not allowed to move inwards due to the photoevaporation, or outwards due to viscous spreading. Even in this optimal scenario, not enough discs survive until the supernovae of the massive stars and so have zero or very little enrichment in 60-Fe. We therefore suggest that the delivery of SLRs to the Solar system may not come from the winds and supernovae of massive stars.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Willingness to HPV self-sampling for cervical cancer screening and its predictors among women attending outpatient clinics in Meru District, Arusha Region, Northern Tanzania

    Background: The ability for women to self-collect human papillomavirus (HPV) samples can potentially reduce the risk of cervical cancer and increase screening coverage. Objectives: To assess the willingness to HPV self-sampling for cervical cancer screening and its predictors among women attending outpatient clinics in Arusha region, northern Tanzania. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 706 women aged 18-55 years in Meru District Hospital and Usa River Health Centre from March to April 2019. Face-to-face intervies were conducted using a questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using Stata version 14.0. The log-binomial regression was used to determine factors associated with willingness to self-collection of HPV samples. Results: Majority (70%) of the women were willing to self-collection of HPV samples for cervical cancer screening and was associated with attending Meru District hospital (PR=2.02, 95%CI 1.77-2.31); good knowledge about cervical cancer warning signs (PR=1.11, 95%CI 1.01-1.22), prevention (PR=1.13, 95%CI 1.04-1.20), and symptoms (PR=1.61, 95%CI 1.33-1.93); and having formal employment (PR=1.22, 95%CI 1.07-1.37). Conclusion: The majority of women were willing to self-collect HPV samples for cervical cancer screening. Self-collection is, therefore, an acceptable and viable means of screening for cervical cancer, which has great implications for Tanzania from a health policy perspective.     Effect of Trail Running Pack Weight on Lower Extremity Biomechanics

    In the sport of ultrarunning there are a variety of ways runners carry the equipment and nutrition that is required. Many of the faster athletes will be seen with handheld bottles or minimal packs, however the size and weight of packs may vary based on the length of the race, nutritional needs, and pacing. PURPOSE: To date, no research has been conducted to understand what biomechanical adaptions occur with packs of varying weight. METHODS: Kinematic and kinetic data were collected using a 16 camera Vicon Nexus System (Vicon Inc. Denver, CO) and the Bertec instrumented treadmill (Bertec, Inc., Columbus, OH) system for 2 female, and 4 male runners averaging 10-30 miles a week. Reflective markers were placed on the lower extremities and chest. Condition 1 consisted of running at no pack weight and then three more conditions of 3, 6, and 9 percent body weight respectively. Participants would run for 5 minutes with a Salomon running vest at each weight. The study will focus on the changes in GRF and moments of the hip, knee, and ankle. RESULTS: The peak ground reaction force (GRF) had a slight increase in all weighted conditions in comparison to condition 1 (2-5%). Anterior and posterior GRF increased by about in 7% in condition 3 and 4 compared to conditions 1 and 2. Hip flexion and extension moments increased in condition 4 compared to all other conditions (13.3% and 11.5%). Knee extensions increased incrementally through conditions 1 and 4. The plantar flexion moment increased 9% in condition 3 and 4 compared to conditions 1 and 2. CONCLUSION: With the increase of weight added into the vest it was hypothesized that biomechanical variables would have incremental changes associated with the change in pack weight. However, each variable was affected differently. Through each variable there was a contrasting point that a significant change was observed. With this evidence, it can be explained that each joint excepted and balanced the weight differently. Evidently, the hips were affected more at the higher weights and the ankle was affected at the lower weight. Condition 2 had little to no effect on biomechanical variables and may not negatively affect performance

    Cross-species activation of hydrogen cyanide production by a promiscuous quorum-sensing receptor promotes Chromobacterium subtsugae competition in a dual-species model

    Many saprophytic bacteria have LuxR-I-type acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) quorum-sensing systems that may be important for competing with other bacteria in complex soil communities. LuxR AHL receptors specifically interact with cognate AHLs to cause changes in expression of target genes. Some LuxR-type AHL receptors have relaxed specificity and are responsive to non-cognate AHLs. These promiscuous receptors might be used to sense and respond to AHLs produced by other bacteria by eavesdropping. We are interested in understanding the role of eavesdropping during interspecies competition. The soil saprophyte Chromobacterium subtsugae has a single AHL circuit, CviR-I, which produces and responds to N-hexanoyl-HSL (C6-HSL). The AHL receptor CviR can respond to a variety of AHLs in addition to C6-HSL. In prior studies we have utilized a coculture model with C. subtsugae and another soil saprophyte, Burkholderia thailandensis. Using this model, we previously showed that promiscuous activation of CviR by B. thailandensis AHLs provides a competitive advantage to C. subtsugae. Here, we show that B. thailandensis AHLs activate transcription of dozens of genes in C. subtsugae, including the hcnABC genes coding for production of hydrogen cyanide. We show that hydrogen cyanide production is population density-dependent and demonstrate that the cross-induction of hydrogen cyanide by B. thailandensis AHLs provides a competitive advantage to C. subtsugae. Our results provide new information on C. subtsugae quorum sensing and are the basis for future studies aimed at understanding the role of eavesdropping in interspecies competition

They have compiled research into a dramaturgical website focused on topics relating to the text of Kaufman and Hart’s Pulitzer Prize winning play You Can’t Take it With You. We will be presenting our final website designed for TheatreUNI patrons, and discussing each of the topics that we individually researched. Our research covers the following topics through the lens of the 1930’s: Great Depression, entertainment industry, music, fashion, immigration, the Russian Revolution, Rasputin, and the Romonovs, the public’s views of the IRS, the FBI, use of fireworks, comedic styles, and racism present in the original text and how TheatreUNI is overcoming it
