Finite ma corrections for sea quark matrix elements
We discuss the finite corrections associated with the computation of sea
quark matrix elements. We find them to differ from the standard normalization
used for valence quarks and to depend strongly on the Lorentz structure of the
current under consideration. Phenomenological implications of these results are
briefly discussed in two examples. We also mention how the magnitude of the

Anomalous Hall effect as a probe of the chiral order in spin glasses
Anomalous Hall effect arising from the noncoplanar spin configuration
(chirality) is discussed as a probe of the chiral order in spin glasses. It is
shown that the Hall coefficient yields direct information about the linear and
nonlinear chiral susceptibilities of the spin sector, which has been hard to
obtain experimentally from the standard magnetic measurements. Based on the
chirality scenario of spin-glass transition, predictions are given on the
behavior of the Hall resistivity of canonical spin glasses.Comment: Order estimate of the effect given, one reference added. To appear in

Complex, Dynamic Combination of Physical, Chemical and Nutritional Variables Controls Spatio-Temporal Variation of Sandy Beach Community Structure
Sandy beach ecological theory states that physical features of the beach control macrobenthic community structure on all but the most dissipative beaches. However, few studies have simultaneously evaluated the relative importance of physical, chemical and biological factors as potential explanatory variables for meso-scale spatio-temporal patterns of intertidal community structure in these systems. Here, we investigate macroinfaunal community structure of a micro-tidal sandy beach that is located on an oligotrophic subtropical coast and is influenced by seasonal estuarine input. We repeatedly sampled biological and environmental variables at a series of beach transects arranged at increasing distances from the estuary mouth. Sampling took place over a period of five months, corresponding with the transition between the dry and wet season. This allowed assessment of biological-physical relationships across chemical and nutritional gradients associated with a range of estuarine inputs. Physical, chemical, and biological response variables, as well as measures of community structure, showed significant spatio-temporal patterns. In general, bivariate relationships between biological and environmental variables were rare and weak. However, multivariate correlation approaches identified a variety of environmental variables (i.e., sampling session, the C:N ratio of particulate organic matter, dissolved inorganic nutrient concentrations, various size fractions of photopigment concentrations, salinity and, to a lesser extent, beach width and sediment kurtosis) that either alone or combined provided significant explanatory power for spatio-temporal patterns of macroinfaunal community structure. Overall, these results showed that the macrobenthic community on Mtunzini Beach was not structured primarily by physical factors, but instead by a complex and dynamic blend of nutritional, chemical and physical drivers. This emphasises the need to recognise ocean-exposed sandy beaches as functional ecosystems in their own right
Anomalous Hall Effect due to the spin chirality in the Kagom\'{e} lattice
We consider a model for a two dimensional electron gas moving on a kagom\'{e}
lattice and locally coupled to a chiral magnetic texture. We show that the
transverse conductivity does not vanish even if spin-orbit
coupling is not present and it may exhibit unusual behavior. Model parameters
are the chirality, the number of conduction electrons and the amplitude of the
local coupling. Upon varying these parameters, a topological transition
characterized by change of the band Chern numbers occur. As a consequence,
can be quantized, proportional to the chirality or have a non
monotonic behavior upon varying these parameters.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Static interactions and stability of matter in Rindler space
Dynamical issues associated with quantum fields in Rindler space are
addressed in a study of the interaction between two sources at rest generated
by the exchange of scalar particles, photons and gravitons. These static
interaction energies in Rindler space are shown to be scale invariant, complex
quantities. The imaginary part will be seen to have its quantum mechanical
origin in the presence of an infinity of zero modes in uniformly accelerated
frames which in turn are related to the radiation observed in inertial frames.
The impact of a uniform acceleration on the stability of matter and the
properties of particles is discussed and estimates are presented of the
instability of hydrogen atoms when approaching the horizon.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figure
Supernova Simulations with Boltzmann Neutrino Transport: A Comparison of Methods
Accurate neutrino transport has been built into spherically symmetric
simulations of stellar core collapse and postbounce evolution. The results of
such simulations agree that spherically symmetric models with standard
microphysical input fail to explode by the delayed, neutrino-driven mechanism.
Independent groups implemented fundamentally different numerical methods to
tackle the Boltzmann neutrino transport equation. Here we present a direct and
detailed comparison of such neutrino radiation-hydrodynamical simulations for
two codes, Agile-Boltztran of the Oak Ridge-Basel group and Vertex of the
Garching group. The former solves the Boltzmann equation directly by an
implicit, general relativistic discrete angle method on the adaptive grid of a
conservative implicit hydrodynamics code with second-order TVD advection. In
contrast, the latter couples a variable Eddington factor technique with an
explicit, moving-grid, conservative high-order Riemann solver with important
relativistic effects treated by an effective gravitational potential. The
presented study is meant to test both neutrino radiation-hydrodynamics
implementations and to provide a data basis for comparisons and verifications
of supernova codes to be developed in the future. Results are discussed for
simulations of the core collapse and post-bounce evolution of a 13 solar mass

Topological Hall effect and Berry phase in magnetic nanostructures
We discuss the anomalous Hall effect in a two-dimensional electron gas
subject to a spatially varying magnetization. This topological Hall effect
(THE) does not require any spin-orbit coupling, and arises solely from Berry
phase acquired by an electron moving in a smoothly varying magnetization. We
propose an experiment with a structure containing 2D electrons or holes of
diluted magnetic semiconductor subject to the stray field of a lattice of
magnetic nanocylinders. The striking behavior predicted for such a system (of
which all relevant parameters are well known) allows to observe unambiguously
the THE and to distinguish it from other mechanisms.Comment: 5 pages with 4 figure
Using Multi-criteria Evaluation and GIS for Flood Risk Analysis in Informal Settlements of Cape Town: The Case of Graveyard Pond
Rural-urban migrations have contributed to the steady increase in the population of Cape Town. Many of the migrants have settled in informal settlements because they cannot afford to rent or buy decent housing. Many of these settlements are however located on marginal and often poorly drained land. Consequently, most of these settlements are prone to flooding after prolonged rainfall. Current flood risk management techniques implemented by the authorities of the Cape Town City Council (CTCC) are not designed to support informal settlements. In fact, owing to a lack of information about the levels of flood risk within the individual settlements, either the CTCC has often been uninvolved or it has implemented inappropriate remedies within such settlements. This study sought to investigate a methodology that the CTCC could use to improve flood risk assessment. Using a case study of an informal settlement in Cape Town, this study proposed a methodology of integration of community-based information into a Geographic Information System (GIS) that can be used by the CTCC for risk assessment. In addition, this research demonstrated the use of a participatory multi-criteria evaluation (MCE) for risk assessment. A questionnaire was used to collect community-based information. The shack outlines of the informal settlement were digitized using CTCC aerial imagery. The questionnaires were captured using spreadsheets and linked to the corresponding shacks in the GIS. Risk weights were subsequently calculated using pairwise comparisons for each household, based on their responses to the questionnaires. Investigation of the Domain Wall Fermion Approach to Chiral Gauge Theories on the Lattice
We investigate a recent proposal to construct chiral gauge theories on the
lattice using domain wall fermions. We restrict ourselves to the finite volume
case, in which two domain walls are present, with modes of opposite chirality
on each of them. We couple the chiral fermions on only one of the domain walls
to a gauge field. In order to preserve gauge invariance, we have to add a
scalar field, which gives rise to additional light mirror fermion and scalar
modes. We argue that in an anomaly free model these extra modes would decouple
if our model possesses a so-called strong coupling symmetric phase. However,
our numerical results indicate that such a phase most probably does not exist.
