Ballistic transport, chiral anomaly and emergence of the neutral electron - hole plasma in graphene
The process of coherent creation of particle - hole excitations by an
electric field in graphene is quantitatively described using a dynamic "first
quantized" approach. We calculate the evolution of current density, number of
pairs and energy in ballistic regime using the tight binding model. The series
in electric field strength up to third order in both DC and AC are
calculated. We show how the physics far from the two Dirac points enters
various physical quantities in linear response and how it is related to the
chiral anomaly. The third harmonic generation and the imaginary part of
conductivity are obtained. It is shown that at certain time scale
the physical behaviour dramatically changes and the
perturbation theory breaks down. Beyond the linear response physics is explored
using an exact solution of the first quantized equations. While for small
electric fields the I-V curve is linear characterized by the universal minimal
resistivity %, at the conductivity grows
fast. The copious pair creation (with rate ), analogous to Schwinger's
electron - positron pair creation from vacuum in QED, leads to creation of the
electron - hole plasma at ballistic times of order . This process is

Comparing parameter tuning methods for evolutionary algorithms
Abstract — Tuning the parameters of an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to a given problem at hand is essential for good algorithm performance. Optimizing parameter values is, however, a non-trivial problem, beyond the limits of human problem solving.In this light it is odd that no parameter tuning algorithms are used widely in evolutionary computing. This paper is meant to be stepping stone towards a better practice by discussing the most important issues related to tuning EA parameters, describing a number of existing tuning methods, and presenting a modest experimental comparison among them. The paper is concluded by suggestions for future research – hopefully inspiring fellow researchers for further work. Index Terms — evolutionary algorithms, parameter tuning I. First Principles Calculation of Anomalous Hall Conductivity in Ferromagnetic bcc Fe
We perform a first principles calculation of the anomalous Hall effect in
ferromagnetic bcc Fe. Our theory identifies an intrinsic contribution to the
anomalous Hall conductivity and relates it to the k-space Berry phase of
occupied Bloch states. The theory is able to account for both dc and

The eta-prime propagator in quenched QCD
The calculation of the eta-prime hairpin diagram is carried out in the
modified quenched approximation (MQA) in which the lattice artifact which
causes exceptional configurations is removed by shifting observed poles at
kappa<kappa_c in the quark propagators to the critical value of hop ping
parameter. By this method, the eta-prime propagator can be accurately
calculated even for very light quark mass. A determination of the topological
susceptibility for quenched QCD is also obtained, using the fermionic method of
Smit and Vink to calculate winding numbers.Comment: 3 pages, 3 postscript figure
Predictors of psychological adjustment after bereavement.
Background: The impact of spousal bereavement on mental health varies among the widowed. More information is needed on factors influencing bereavement outcome. Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study on a sample of 216 widowed individuals. Initial non-response was high, with only 8% of all approached persons participating in the study. The influence of demographic and psychosocial predictors on four general outcome measures (depression, anxiety, somatization, and quality of life) and one loss-related outcome (complicated grief) was studied by means of backward linear regression analysis. Further analyses were performed to explore the possibility of a buffer effect. Results: Depressive symptomatology was best predicted by: age, duration of widowhood, perceived non-supportiveness, physical disorders, and mastery. The other outcome measures were predicted by the same predictors supplemented by gender and education. Mastery interacted with the number of physical disorders while perceived social support interacted with duration of widowhood and age. Conclusions: Enhancement of mastery should probably be one of the components of effective support for widowed individuals most vulnerable to psychiatric complications. The widowed could furthermore benefit from social support. Obviously, these suggestions need to be further examined in longitudinal research with more representative samples. © 2006 International Psychogeriatric Association
Costs and benefits of tuning parameters of evolutionary algorithms
Abstract. We present an empirical study on the impact of different design choices on the performance of an evolutionary algorithm (EA). Four EA components are considered—parent selection, survivor selection, recombination and mutation—and for each component we study the impact of choosing the right operator and of tuning its free parameter(s). We tune 120 different combinations of EA operators to 4 different classes of fitness landscapes and measure the cost of tuning. We find that components differ greatly in importance. Typically the choice of operator for parent selection has the greatest impact, and mutation needs the most tuning. Regarding individual EAs however, the impact of design choices for one component depends on the choices for other components, as well as on the available amount of resources for tuning.
Spin Disorder and Magnetic Anisotropy in Fe3O4 Nanoparticles
We have studied the magnetic behavior of dextran-coated magnetite
(FeO) nanoparticles with median particle size \left=8 .
Magnetization curves and in-field M\"ossbauer spectroscopy measurements showed
that the magnetic moment of the particles was much smaller than the bulk
material. However, we found no evidence of magnetic irreversibility or
non-saturating behavior at high fields, usually associated to spin canting. The
values of magnetic anisotropy from different techniques indicate that
surface or shape contributions are negligible. It is proposed that these
particles have bulk-like ferrimagnetic structure with ordered A and B
sublattices, but nearly compensated magnetic moments. The dependence of the
blocking temperature with frequency and applied fields, ,
suggests that the observed non-monotonic behavior is governed by the strength

Reproducibility of lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) assessment in endometrial cancer
Aims Lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) in endometrial cancer (EC) is an important prognostic variable impacting on a patient's individual recurrence risk and adjuvant treatment recommendations. Recent work has shown that grading the extent of LVSI further improves its prognostic strength in patients with stage I endometrioid EC. Despite this, there is little information on the reproducibility of LVSI assessment in EC. Therefore, we designed a study to evaluate interobserver agreement in discriminating true LVSI from LVSI mimics (Phase I) and reproducibility of grading extent of LVSI (Phase II). Methods and results Scanned haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) slides of endometrioid EC (EEC) with a predefined possible LVSI focus were hosted on a website and assessed by a panel of six European gynaecological pathologists. In Phase I, 48 H&E slides were included for LVSI assessment and in Phase II, 42 H&E slides for LVSI grading. Each observer was instructed to apply the criteria for LVSI used in daily practice. The degree of agreement was measured using the two-way absolute agreement average-measures intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Reproducibility of LVSI assessment (ICC = 0.64, P < 0.001) and LVSI grading (ICC = 0.62, P < 0.001) in EEC was substantial among the observers. Conclusions Given the good reproducibility of LVSI, this study further supports the important role of LVSI in decision algorithms for adjuvant treatment
