De pioniers van de Congolese archeologie stonden in 1885 dan ook voor een onmetelijke taak. Tot op vandaag vertonen de kaarten met archeologische vindplaatsen nog heel wat lacunes. Els Cornelissen en Alexandre Livingstone-Smith nemen ons mee op een reis doorheen de geschiedenis van 130 jaar archeologisch veldwerk in Congo. Onderzoek waarvan de methoden, perspectieven en interesses varieerden doorheen de tijd. De Balegemse jenever wordt nog steeds met een grotendeels 19de-eeuwse apparatuur en volgens een 19de-eeuws recept gestookt. Europa erkende de naam Balegemse jenever in 2008 als geografische aanduiding. Eric Van Schoonenberghe maakte als doctor in de wetenschappen (biochemie) van jenever zijn studieonderwerp. In deze bijdrage verhaalt hij de geschiedenis van de jenever en van de landbouwstokerij Van Damme, sinds 2012 een beschermd monument.Summar

    Decoupling the volcano infrasound source from the crater acoustic response

    Volcano infrasound is an important component of multi-disciplinary volcano geophysics and has proven utility for tracking eruptive activity and quantifying eruption dynamics. Unfortunately, a major limitation in our interpretation of volcano infrasound is that it is critically affected by the morphology of the volcanic crater, which can transform potentially simple source-time functions occurring within the crater into a signal that is substantially more complex. If infrasound waveforms are to be used to recover important physical parameters about an eruption source, then a robust understanding of the acoustic response of the crater is required. In many cases, and especially for large deep craters, the acoustic response function acts as a severe filter. For example, at Cotopaxi Volcano (Ecuador) infrasound ‘tornillos’ with an impulsive onset and peaked spectra at 0.2 Hz decaying for more than 90 s are part of the source response due to the crater’s steep-walled, deep crater. We analyze broadband infrasound data from open-vent volcanoes with a wide variety of crater geometries and jointly calculate their crater acoustic response using 1-D (axisymmetric) and 3-D morphologies derived from structure-from-motion digital terrain models. We analyze both explosion and lava lake infrasound from Villarrica (Chile), Stromboli (Italy), and Nyiragongo (Democratic Republic of the Congo) to demonstrate a broad spectrum of volcano infrasound, whose attributes are heavily influenced by crater shape. We demonstrate how some differences between simulations and recorded explosion are influenced by sourcetime functions, which may range from brief and impulsive to complicated or extended in time. Numerical modeling shows that each volcanic crater has a unique impulse response and that deconvolving this acoustic response is vital for estimating important eruption parameters including the size of volcanic explosions.PublishedNapoli (Italia)5V.     Phylogeny of Cyperaceae Based on DNA Sequence Data–a New rbcL Analysis

    Since the Monocots II meeting in 1998, significant new data have been published that enhance our systematic knowledge of Cyperaceae. Phylogenetic studies in the family have also progressed steadily. For this study, a parsimony analysis was carried out using all rbcL sequences currently available for Cyperaceae, including data for two new genera. One of the four subfamilies (Caricoideae) and seven of the 14 tribes (Bisboeckelereae, Cariceae, Cryptangieae, Dulichieae, Eleocharideae, Sclerieae, Trilepideae) are monophyletic. Subfamily Mapanioideae and tribe Chrysitricheae are monophyletic if, as the evidence suggests, Hellmuthia is considered a member of Cypereae. Some other features of our analysis include: well-supported Trilepideae and Sclerieae–Bisboeckelereae clades; a possible close relationship between Cryptangieae and Schoeneae; polyphyletic tribes Schoeneae and Scirpeae; the occurrence of Cariceae within the Dulichieae–Scirpeae clade, and a strongly supported clade, representing Cyperus and allied genera in Cypereae, sister to a poorly supported Ficinia–Hellmuthia– Isolepis–Scirpoides clade. Such patterns are consistent with other studies based on DNA sequence data. One outcome may be that only two subfamilies, Mapanioideae and Cyperoideae, are recognized. Much further work is needed, with efforts carefully coordinated among researchers. The work should focus on obtaining morphological and molecular data for all genera in the family

    Rare mutations in SQSTM1 modify susceptibility to frontotemporal lobar degeneration

    Mutations in the gene coding for Sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1) have been genetically associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Paget disease of bone. In the present study, we analyzed the SQSTM1 coding sequence for mutations in an extended cohort of 1,808 patients with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), ascertained within the European Early-Onset Dementia consortium. As control dataset, we sequenced 1,625 European control individuals and analyzed whole-exome sequence data of 2,274 German individuals (total n = 3,899). Association of rare SQSTM1 mutations was calculated in a meta-analysis of 4,332 FTLD and 10,240 control alleles. We identified 25 coding variants in FTLD patients of which 10 have not been described. Fifteen mutations were absent in the control individuals (carrier frequency < 0.00026) whilst the others were rare in both patients and control individuals. When pooling all variants with a minor allele frequency < 0.01, an overall frequency of 3.2 % was calculated in patients. Rare variant association analysis between patients and controls showed no difference over the whole protein, but suggested that rare mutations clustering in the UBA domain of SQSTM1 may influence disease susceptibility by doubling the risk for FTLD (RR = 2.18 [95 % CI 1.24-3.85]; corrected p value = 0.042). Detailed histopathology demonstrated that mutations in SQSTM1 associate with widespread neuronal and glial phospho-TDP-43 pathology. With this study, we provide further evidence for a putative role of rare mutations in SQSTM1 in the genetic etiology of FTLD and showed that, comparable to other FTLD/ALS genes, SQSTM1 mutations are associated with TDP-43 pathology

    Replication of an empirical approach to delineate the heterogeneity of chronic unexplained fatigue

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is defined by self-reported symptoms. There are no diagnostic signs or laboratory markers, and the pathophysiology remains inchoate. In part, difficulties identifying and replicating biomarkers and elucidating the pathophysiology reflect the heterogeneous nature of the syndromic illness CFS. We conducted this analysis of people from defined metropolitan, urban, and rural populations to replicate our earlier empirical delineation of medically unexplained chronic fatigue and CFS into discrete endophenotypes. Both the earlier and current analyses utilized quantitative measures of functional impairment and symptoms as well as laboratory data. This study and the earlier one enrolled participants from defined populations and measured the internal milieu, which differentiates them from studies of clinic referrals that examine only clinical phenotypes.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This analysis evaluated 386 women identified in a population-based survey of chronic fatigue and unwellness in metropolitan, urban, and rural populations of the state of Georgia, USA. We used variables previously demonstrated to effectively delineate endophenotypes in an attempt to replicate identification of these endophenotypes. Latent class analyses were used to derive the classes, and these were compared and contrasted to those described in the previous study based in Wichita, Kansas.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We identified five classes in the best fit analysis. Participants in Class 1 (25%) were polysymptomatic, with sleep problems and depressed mood. Class 2 (24%) was also polysymptomatic, with insomnia and depression, but participants were also obese with associated metabolic strain. Class 3 (20%) had more selective symptoms but was equally obese with metabolic strain. Class 4 (20%) and Class 5 (11%) consisted of nonfatigued, less symptomatic individuals, Class 4 being older and Class 5 younger. The classes were generally validated by independent variables. People with CFS fell equally into Classes 1 and 2. Similarities to the Wichita findings included the same four main defining variables of obesity, sleep problems, depression, and the multiplicity of symptoms. Four out of five classes were similar across both studies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These data support the hypothesis that chronic medically unexplained fatigue is heterogeneous and can be delineated into discrete endophenotypes that can be replicated. The data do not support the current perception that CFS represents a unique homogeneous disease and suggests broader criteria may be more explanatory. This replication suggests that delineation of endophenotypes of CFS and associated ill health may be necessary in order to better understand etiology and provide more patient-focused treatments.</p

    Nasal oxytocin administration does not influence eye gaze or perceived relationship of male volunteers with physicians in a simulated online consultation: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial

    The patient–physician relationship is a critical determinant of patient health outcomes. Verbal and non-verbal communication, such as eye gaze, are vital aspects of this bond. Neurobiological studies indicate that oxytocin may serve as a link between increased eye gaze and social bonding. Therefore, oxytocin signaling could serve as a key factor influencing eye gaze as well as the patient–physician relationsh ip. We aimed to test the effects of oxytocin on gaze to the eyes of the physician and the patient–physician relationship by conducting a randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial in healthy volunteers with intranasally administered oxytocin (with a prev iously effective single dose of 24 IU, EudraCT number 2018-004081-34). The eye gaze of 68 male volunteers was studied using eye tracking during a simulated video call consultation with a physician, who provided information about vaccination against the human papillomavirus. Relationship outcomes, including trust, satisfaction, and perceived physician communication style, were measured using questionnaires and corrected for possible confounds (social anxiety and attachment orientation). Additional secondary outcome measures for the effect of oxytocin were recall of information and pupil diameter and exploratory outcomes included mood and anxiety measures. Oxytocin did not affect the eye-tracking p arameters of volunteers’ gaze toward the eyes of the physician. Moreover, oxytocin did n ot affect the parameters of bonding between volunteers and the physician nor other secondary and exploratory outcomes in this setting. Bayesian hypothesis testing provided evidence for the absence of effects. These results contradict the notion that oxy tocin affects eye gaze patterns or bonding

    Acute kidney disease and renal recovery : consensus report of the Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) 16 Workgroup

    Consensus definitions have been reached for both acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) and these definitions are now routinely used in research and clinical practice. The KDIGO guideline defines AKI as an abrupt decrease in kidney function occurring over 7 days or less, whereas CKD is defined by the persistence of kidney disease for a period of > 90 days. AKI and CKD are increasingly recognized as related entities and in some instances probably represent a continuum of the disease process. For patients in whom pathophysiologic processes are ongoing, the term acute kidney disease (AKD) has been proposed to define the course of disease after AKI; however, definitions of AKD and strategies for the management of patients with AKD are not currently available. In this consensus statement, the Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) proposes definitions, staging criteria for AKD, and strategies for the management of affected patients. We also make recommendations for areas of future research, which aim to improve understanding of the underlying processes and improve outcomes for patients with AKD
