    Association of innate defense proteins BPIFA1 and BPIFB1 with disease severity in COPD

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by an abnormal inflammatory response in the lungs caused by the inhalation of noxious particles and gases. The airway epithelium has a protective function against these harmful agents by maintaining a physical barrier and by secreting defensive proteins, such as bactericidal/permeability-increasing fold-containing (BPIF) proteins, BPIFA1 and BPIFB1. However, inconsistent data regarding BPIFA1 expression in smokers and COPD patients have been reported to date. Therefore, we investigated the expression of BPIFA1 and BPIFB1 in a large cohort of never-smokers and smokers with and without COPD, both on the messenger RNA (mRNA) level in lung tissue and on the protein level in airway epithelium. Furthermore, we examined the correlation between BPIFA1 and BPIFB1 levels, goblet cell hyperplasia, and lung function measurements. BPIFA1 and BPIFB1 mRNA expressions were significantly increased in stage III-IV COPD patients compared with stage II COPD patients and subjects without COPD. In addition, protein levels in COPD patients were significantly increased in comparison with subjects without COPD. BPIFA1 and BPIFB1 levels were inversely correlated with measurements of airflow limitation and positively correlated with goblet cell hyperplasia. In addition, by the use of immunofluorescence double staining, we demonstrated the expression of BPIFB1 in goblet cells. In conclusion, we show that BPIFA1 and BPIFB1 levels are elevated in COPD patients and correlate with disease severity

    Tachyon condensation on brane sphalerons

    We consider a sphaleron solution in field theory that provides a toy model for unstable D-branes of string theory. We investigate the tachyon condensation on a Dp-brane. The localized modes, including a tachyon, arise in the spectrum of a sphaleron solution of a \phi^4 field theory on M^{p+1}\times S^1. We use these modes to find a multiscalar tachyon potential living on the sphaleron world-volume.     Theory of Magneto--Acoustic Transport in Modulated Quantum Hall Systems Near ν=1/2\nu=1/2

    Motivated by the experimental results of Willett et al [Phys.Rev. Lett., {\bf 78}, 4478 (1997)] we develop a magneto-transport theory for the response of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime near Landau level filling factor ν=1/2\nu = 1/2 to the surface acoustic wave (SAW) in the presence of an added periodic density modulation. We assume there exists a Composite Fermion Fermi Surface (CF-FS) at ν=1/2\nu = 1/2, and we show that the deformation of the (CF-FS) due to the density modulation can be at the origin of the observed transport anomalies for the experimental conditions. Our analysis is carried out particularly for the non-local case which corresponds to the SAW experiments. We introduce a new model of a deformed CF-FS. The model permits us to explain anomalous features of the response of the modulated 2DEG to the SAW near ν=1/2:\nu = 1/2: namely the nonlinear wave vector dependence of the electron conductivity, the appearance of peaks in the SAW velocity shift and attenuation and the anisotropy of the effect, all of which originate from contributions to the conductivity tensor due to the regions of the CF-FS which are flattened by the applied modulation.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, the published versio

    Religion and popular rebellion, from the Capuciati to Niklashausen

    The historiography of pre-modern popular uprisings tends to ascribe a religiose 'naïveté' to earlier revolts, placing religion as innately antithetical to popular politics. This article challenges that opposition, and argues that whilst (as Sam Cohn has recently demonstrated) medieval revolts were not by any means all 'religious' in outlook, leadership or inspiration, those which did involve religious elements can be read more sympathetically and with greater nuance. Focusing particularly on structural similarities between the Drummer of Niklashausen (1476) and the Capuciati (1183), the article argues that longue durée forms of revolt persist, driven by a plebeian reappropriation of certain elements in orthodox religion
