    Chromatic induction and the layout of colours within a complex scene

    AbstractA target’s apparent colour is influenced by the colours in its surrounding. If the surrounding consists of a single coloured surface, the influence is a shift ‘away’ from the surface’s colour. If the surface is more than 1° from the target area the shift is very small. If there are many surfaces, then not only the average luminance and chromaticity of the surfaces matters, but also the chromatic variability. It is not yet clear whether it makes any difference where the chromatic variability is within the scene, so we constructed stimuli in which the chromatic variability was restricted to certain regions. We found that it made very little difference where the chromatic variability was located. The extent to which the average colour of nearby surfaces influences the apparent colour of the target seems to depend on the average chromatic variability of the whole scene

    A new method for tracking of motor skill learning through practical application of Fitts’ law

    This article is made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.A novel upper limb motor skill measure, task productivity rate (TPR) was developed integrating speed and spatial error, delivered by a practical motor skill rehabilitation task (MSRT). This prototype task involved placement of 5 short pegs horizontally on a spatially configured rail array. The stability of TPR was tested on 18 healthy right-handed adults (10 women, 8 men, median age 29 years) in a prospective single-session quantitative within-subjects study design. Manipulations of movement rate 10% faster and slower relative to normative states did not significantly affect TPR, F(1.387, 25.009) = 2.465, p = .121. A significant linear association between completion time and error was highest during the normative state condition (Pearson's r = .455, p < .05). Findings provided evidence that improvements in TPR over time reflected motor learning with possible changes in coregulation behavior underlying practice under different conditions. These findings extend Fitts’ law theory to tracking of practical motor skill using a dexterity task, which could have potential clinical applications in rehabilitation

    Activity of high-dose epirubicin combined with gemcitabine in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer: a multicenter phase I and II study

    The aim of the study was to evaluate efficacy and tolerance of epirubicin and gemcitabine as first-line chemotherapy in patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. A phase I study was performed with the combination of escalating doses of epirubicin intravenously on day 1 and a fixed dose of gemcitabine on days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle. Eighteen patients were included in the phase I part of the study before the maximum tolerated dose was found. Dose-limiting toxicity was febrile neutropenia. The phase II part of the study was continued with epirubicin 100 mg m−2on day 1 and gemcitabine 1125 mg m−2on days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle. Forty-three chemotherapy-naive patients were included. The median age of the patients was 60 years (range 26–75). Most patients (74%) were in stage IV. Granulocytopenia CTC grade 4 occurred in 32.5% and thrombocytopenia grade 4 in 11.6% of cycles. Febrile neutropenia occurred in six patients. Non-haematological toxicity was mainly mucositis CTC grade 2 and 3 in 35% of patients. The tumour response rate was 49% (95% confidence interval (CI) 35–63%). The median survival time for the patients was 42 weeks (95% CI 13–69). © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

    Optimized loading of an optical dipole trap for the production of Chromium BECs

    We report on a strategy to maximize the number of chromium atoms transferred from a magneto-optical trap into an optical trap through accumulation in metastable states via strong optical pumping. We analyse how the number of atoms in a chromium Bose Einstein condensate can be raised by a proper handling of the metastable state populations. Four laser diodes have been implemented to address the four levels that are populated during the MOT phase. The individual importance of each state is specified. To stabilize two of our laser diode, we have developed a simple ultrastable passive reference cavity whose long term stability is better than 1 MHz

    Consultations Preliminary to Interdisciplinary Chronic Pain Rehabilitation

    Before patients with chronic pain enter an interdisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation programme, a team of various healthcare professionals performs a biopsychosocial analysis of their pain problem. To enhance patients’ engagement, the problem analysis is thoroughly discussed with them in order to gain a shared understanding of the nature of their pain problem. This study explores how patients and practitioners talk through their rehabilitation team’s hypotheses regarding the psychosocial factors involved in these patients’ health situation. Nine consultations were recorded at various Dutch interdisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation units. The recordings were transcribed and analysed, combining an applied conversation analytic research approach with discursive psychology. Patients and practitioners are found to orient to ensuring consensus on the problem analysis as a relevant activity and tend to avoid or minimize the articulation of differences in perspectives. This study also shows that this orientation to consensus involves a delicate management of issues of accountability and blame. Findings can be used by practitioners to consider communication practices that are more likely to encourage patients to voice potential concerns regarding their rehabilitation team’s findings

    Modifying one’s hand’s trajectory when a moving target’s orientation changes

    The path that the hand takes to intercept an elongated moving target depends on the target’s orientation. How quickly do people respond to changes in the moving target’s orientation? In the present study, participants were asked to intercept moving targets that sometimes abruptly changed orientation shortly after they started moving. It took the participants slightly more than 150 ms to adjust their hands’ paths to a change in target orientation. This is about 50 ms longer than it took them to respond to a 5-mm jump in the moving target’s position. It is only slightly shorter than it took them to initiate the movement. We propose that responses to changes in visually perceived orientation are not exceptionally fast, because there is no relationship between target orientation and direction of hand movement that is sufficiently general in everyday life for one to risk making an inappropriate response in order to respond faster

    Serial search for fingers of the same hand but not for fingers of different hands

    In most haptic search tasks, tactile stimuli are presented to the fingers of both hands. In such tasks, the search pattern for some object features, such as the shape of raised line symbols, has been found to be serial. The question is whether this search is serial over all fingers irrespective of the hand, or whether it is serial over the fingers of each hand and parallel over the two hands. To investigate this issue, we determined the speed of static haptic search when two items are presented to two fingers of the same hand and when two items are presented to two fingers of different hands. We compared the results with predictions for parallel and serial search based on the results of a previous study using the same items and a similar task. The results indicate that two fingers of the same hand process information in a serial manner, while two fingers of two different hands process information in parallel. Thus, considering the individual fingers as independent units in haptic search may not be justified, because the hand that they belong to matters. © 2009 Springer-Verlag

    Grasping and hitting moving objects

    Some experimental evidence suggests that grasping should be regarded as independent control of the thumb and the index finger (digit control hypothesis). To investigate this further, we compared how the tips of the thumb and the index finger moved in space when grasping spheres to how they moved when they were hitting the sphere using only one digit. In order to make the tasks comparable, we designed the experiment in such a way that subjects contacted the spheres in about the same way in the hitting task as when grasping it. According to the digit control hypothesis, the two tasks should yield similar digit trajectories in space. People hit and grasped stationary and moving spheres. We compared the similarity of the digits' trajectories across the two tasks by evaluating the time courses of the paths of the average of the thumb and the index finger. These paths were more similar across tasks than across sphere motion, supporting the notion that grasping is not controlled fundamentally differently than hitting. © 2011 The Author(s)
