El desprecio de las masas

Este ensayo sobre las luchas culturales de la sociedad moderna surgió de una conferencia pronunciada por su autor el primero de julio de 1999, ante la Academia Bávara de las Bellas Artes (Múnich). Traducido al castellano por Germán Cano y publicado por primera vez en esta lengua por la Editorial Pre-textos de Valencia (2002), se ofrece aquí a los lectores la parte final (V) del texto original. El profesor Sloterdijk (Karlsruhe, 1947) procede de una familia judía que emigró de Alemania a Venezuela cuando se produjo el ascenso nazi, retornando posteriormente para adelantar sus estudios universitarios. Actualmente es rector de la Hochschule für Gestaltung. Bien conocido en España, donde participó en el seminario sobre “La deshumanización del mundo”, organizado por la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía durante el mes de mayo de 2003, fue actor principal de una ruidosa polémica que sostuvo –durante los meses de septiembre y octubre de 1999– con Jürgen Habermas y Ernest Tughendal en defensa de su provocadora conferencia titulada “Normas para el parque humano”, pronunciada en las Jornadas del castillo de Elmau sobre el pensamiento de Heidegger y Lévinas (julio de 1999). Sus libros más conocidos por los lectores latinoamericanos son la Crítica de la razón cínica (1983) y Esferas (1998). En septiembre de 2005 fue registrado por las revistas The Prospect y Foreign Policy como uno de los cien intelectuales públicos de mayor influencia en la opinión mundial de nuestros días

Festival and the City: Performativity of Sexual acts in public spheres

In this paper, we address the perception of sexual activities in public spaces and how they become aesthetic, social and cultural intervention once expressed through and embodied within performative events (theatre, street performance, carnival, festival, rave etc). A substantial amount of research has been done on the relation between sexuality and gender about public spaces, and influence of civic and urban identity on public expression of sexuality and gender. We will look at the invented rituals establishing sexuality within a context of performativity through relationships with public spaces. As the case studies, we will use the works of theatre companies La Fura dels Baus and Teatro Oficina. To set up the set of relationships between inside and outside, we will borrow a useful concept on ‘spheres' from the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk to look at the public space as a system of spheres where a different set of rules apply enabling actions to take place. These performances in urban contexts, as well as some festivals and particularly carnivals, become a way of the staging of sexual acts in public space, in opposition to the dominant narrative of private – domestic space. We will look at how collectiveness and civic spaces become essential elements of this phenomenon and its relevance in our contemporary reality as an element of subversion of social structures.
