    Numerical investigation on the Hill's type lunar problem with homogeneous potential

    We consider the planar Hill's lunar problem with a homogeneous gravitational potential. The investigation of the system is twofold. First, the starting conditions of the trajectories are classified into three classes, that is bounded, escaping, and collisional. Second, we study the no-return property of the Lagrange point L2L_2 and we observe that the escaping trajectories are scattered exponentially. Moreover, it is seen that in the supercritical case, with α2\alpha \geq 2, the basin boundaries are smooth. On the other hand, in the subcritical case, with α<2\alpha < 2 the boundaries between the different types of basins exhibit fractal properties.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Rushes video summarization using a collaborative approach

    This paper describes the video summarization system developed by the partners of the K-Space European Network of Excellence for the TRECVID 2008 BBC rushes summarization evaluation. We propose an original method based on individual content segmentation and selection tools in a collaborative system. Our system is organized in several steps. First, we segment the video, secondly we identify relevant and redundant segments, and finally, we select a subset of segments to concatenate and build the final summary with video acceleration incorporated. We analyze the performance of our system through the TRECVID evaluation

    The effect of dietary fish oil on weight gain and insulin sensitivity is dependent on APOE genotype in humanized targeted replacement mice

    We investigated the independent and interactive impact of the common APOE genotype and marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on the development of obesity and associated cardiometabolic dysfunction in a murine model. Human APOE3 and APOE4 targeted replacement mice were fed either a high-fat control diet (HFD) or a HFD supplemented with 3% n-3 PUFA from fish oil (HFD + FO) for 8 wk. We established the impact of intervention on food intake, bodyweight, and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass; plasma, lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides), liver enzymes, and adipokines; glucose and insulin during an intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test; and Glut4 and ApoE expression in VAT. HFD feeding induced more weight gain and higher plasma lipids in APOE3 compared to APOE4 mice (P < 0.05), along with a 2-fold higher insulin and impaired glucose tolerance. Supplementing APOE3, but not APOE4, animals with dietary n-3 PUFA decreased bodyweight gain, plasma lipids, and insulin (P < 0.05) and improved glucose tolerance, which was associated with increased VAT Glut4 mRNA levels (P < 0.05). Our findings demonstrate that an APOE3 genotype predisposes mice to develop obesity and its metabolic complications, which was attenuated by n-3 PUFA supplementation.—Slim, K.     Energy-Harvesting in Cooperative AF Relaying Networks Over Log-Normal Fading Channels

    Energy-harvesting (EH) and wireless power transfer are increasingly becoming a promising source of power in future wireless networks and have recently attracted a considerable amount of research, particularly on cooperative two-hop relay networks in Rayleigh fading channels. In contrast, this paper investigates the performance of wireless power transfer based two-hop cooperative relaying systems in indoor channels characterized by log-normal fading. Specifically, two EH protocols are considered here, namely, time switching relaying (TSR) and power splitting relaying (PSR). Our findings include accurate analytical expressions for the ergodic capacity and ergodic outage probability for the two aforementioned protocols. Monte Carlo simulations are used throughout to confirm the accuracy of our analysis. The results show that increasing the channel variance will always provide better ergodic capacity performance. It is also shown that a good selection of the EH time in the TSR protocol, and the power splitting factor in the PTS protocol, is the key to achieve the best system performance

    Modelling intrusions through quiescent and moving ambients

    Volcanic eruptions commonly produce buoyant ash-laden plumes that rise through the stratified atmosphere. On reaching their level of neutral buoyancy, these plumes cease rising and transition to horizontally spreading intrusions. Such intrusions occur widely in density-stratified fluid environments, and in this paper we develop a shallow-layer model that governs their motion. We couple this dynamical model to a model for particle transport and sedimentation, to predict both the time-dependent distribution of ash within volcanic intrusions and the flux of ash that falls towards the ground. In an otherwise quiescent atmosphere, the intrusions spread axisymmetrically. We find that the buoyancy-inertial scalings previously identified for continuously supplied axisymmetric intrusions are not realised by solutions of the governing equations. By calculating asymptotic solutions to our model we show that the flow is not self-similar, but is instead time-dependent only in a narrow region at the front of the intrusion. This non-self-similar behaviour results in the radius of the intrusion growing with time \textrm3/4,ratherthan2/3 , rather than \textrm2/3 as suggested previously. We also identify a transition to drag-dominated flow, which is described by a similarity solution with radial growth now proportional to \textrm5/9$ . In the presence of an ambient wind, intrusions are not axisymmetric. Instead, they are predominantly advected downstream, while at the same time spreading laterally and thinning vertically due to persistent buoyancy forces. We show that close to the source, this lateral spreading is in a buoyancy-inertial regime, whereas far downwind, the horizontal buoyancy forces that drive the spreading are balanced by drag. Our results emphasise the important role of buoyancy-driven spreading, even at large distances from the source, in the formation of the flowing thin horizontally extensive layers of ash that form in the atmosphere as a result of volcanic eruptions

    Rate-Optimal Multiuser Scheduling with Reduced Feedback Load and Analysis of Delay Effects

    In this paper we propose a multiuser scheduling algorithm that has the maximum average system spectral efficiency, but obtains a significant reduction in feedback load compared to full feedback by using a feedback threshold. An expression for the threshold value that minimizes the feedback load is found. Novel closed-form expressions are also found for the system spectral efficiency when using M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation. Finally, we analyze the impact of scheduling delay and outdated channel estimates. 1

    A clinical effect of disease-modifying treatment on alloimmunisation in transfused patients with myelodysplastic syndromes:Data from a population-based study

    BACKGROUND: Alloimmunisation against blood products is an adverse event, causing time-consuming compatibility testing. Current literature has not yet identified the influence of treatment on the risk of alloimmunisation in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational, population-based study, using the HemoBase registry, was performed including all transfused patients who were diagnosed with MDS between 2005 and 2017 in Friesland, a province in the Netherlands. Information about transfusion dates, types, and treatment regimens was collected from the health records. Blood products were matched for ABO and Rhesus D. The effect of disease-modifying treatment was estimated with incidence rates and a Cox time-dependent analysis. RESULTS: 233 patients were included in this study, with a median follow-up of 13.0 months. Alloimmunisation occurred in 21 patients (9.0%) and predominantly occurred early in follow-up. Three (5%) and 18 (11%) alloimmunisation events occurred in patients with and without disease-modifying treatment, respectively. The hazard ratio for alloimmunisation without treatment compared to during treatment was 2.7 (95% CI: 0.35–20.0), with incidence rates of 7.18 and 2.41 per 100 patient-years, respectively. DISCUSSION: In a non-selected real-world population of MDS patients receiving blood transfusions, the percentage of patients with alloimmunisation was below 10%. The results of this study support the hypothesis that disease-modifying treatment affects the ability of the immune system to mount an antibody response to non-self blood group antigens
