    A high-throughput single-use platform for vaccine bioprocess development

    Vaccination is the predominant tool in the prevention of infectious disease. Considering the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) pandemic, the need for a development platform, capable of rapid candidate screening and/or a vaccine scaffold capable of adaptability to new disease targets, has never been more apparent. VLPs, expressed in the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris, offer an exciting alternative to current manufacturing methods due to their potential as scaffolds for foreign antigen display. The hepatitis B core antigen (HBC) can spontaneously self-assemble, forming icosahedral particles that are inherently immunogenic. Tandem Core HBC (TC-HBC) VLPs have been genetically modified in the major insertion region (MIR) enabling display of up to two epitopes of interest when assembled. For TC-HBC VLPs to be considered a viable vaccine candidate, their bioprocessing must be optimized.     An evaluation of a mental toughness education and training program for early-career English football league referees

    The present study evaluated the effectiveness of a Mental Toughness Education and Training Program (MTETP) in elite football officiating. The MTETP consisted of four individual and two group-based workshops designed to develop Mental Toughness (MT) and enhance performance in three English Football League (EFL) referees. Adopting a single-subject, multiple-baseline-across-participants design, MT and referee-assessor reports were evaluated. Self and coach-ratings of MT highlighted an instant and continued improvement in all three referees during the intervention phases. Performance reports of all referees improved throughout the intervention phases compared to the baseline phase. Social validation data indicated that an array of strategies within the MTETP facilitated MT development. Discussions acknowledge theoretical and practical implications relating to the continued progression of MT interventions in elite sport

    Paedophiles in the community: inter-agency conflict, news leaks and the local press

    This article explores the leaking of confidential information about secret Home Office plans to house convicted paedophiles within a local community (albeit inside a prison). It argues that a politics of paedophilia has emerged in which inter-agency consensus on the issue of ‘what to do’ with high-profile sex offenders has broken down. Accordingly, the article situates newspaper ‘outing’ of paedophiles in the community in relation to vigilante journalism and leaked information from official agencies. The article then presents research findings from a case study of news events set in train following a whistle-blowing reaction by Prison Officers’ Association officials to Home Office plans. Drawing from a corpus of 10 interviews with journalists and key protagonists in the story, the article discusses both the dynamics of whistle blowing about paedophiles and also what happens after the whistle has blown

    Relationship of Weed Control and Soil pH to No-Tillage Corn Yields

    Atrazine and simazine are used for selective control of a broad spectrum of weeds in corn. Over 80% of the U.S. corn production is treated with one or the other of these two s-triazine herbicides. In Kentucky they are used annually on over 800,000 acres of corn, including over 200,000 acres of no-tillage corn. When added to the soil these compounds are ultimately degraded to non-phytotoxic compounds. The rate of degradation is dependent upon the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. Although atrazine and simazine are chemically similar, simazine is considered to degrade slightly slower than atrazine after application to the soil and as a result will remain in the soil for a longer period of time

    Glass-Like Heat Conduction in High-Mobility Crystalline Semiconductors

    The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline semiconductors with type-I clathrate hydrate crystal structure is reported. Ge clathrates (doped with Sr and/or Eu) exhibit lattice thermal conductivities typical of amorphous materials. Remarkably, this behavior occurs in spite of the well-defined crystalline structure and relatively high electron mobility (∌100cm2/Vs\sim 100 cm^2/Vs). The dynamics of dopant ions and their interaction with the polyhedral cages of the structure are a likely source of the strong phonon scattering.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures, to be published, Phys.     Eastern Black Nightshade

    The nightshade species of North America consist of black nightshade (Solanum nigrum L.), American black nightshade (Solanum americanum Mill.), hairy nightshade (Solanum surrachoides Sendt.) and eastern black nightshade (Solanum ptycanthum Dun.). Eastern black nightshade is a problem weed in many soybean producing areas and is the predominant problem nightshade in Kentucky. In addition to field crops, the nightshades are also problem weeds in canning peas (Pisum sativum L.), field beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) and tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Previously, most nightshades in Kentucky have been referred to as black nightshade. It is now known that black nightshade occurs in the U.S. only in the western states, while eastern black. nightshade is commonly found in many states east of the Rocky Mountains. These species are similar in their gross morphology and are easily confused with each other. When grown under different environmental conditions, the nightshades may vary considerably in many taxonomic characteristics frequently used for identification and make identification more difficult (Ogg, A.G., B.p.     Lattice dynamics and reduced thermal conductivity of filled skutterudites

    The great reduction in thermal conductivity of skutterudites upon filling the ``void'' sites with Rare Earth (RE) ions is key to their favorable thermoelectric properties but remains to be understood. Using lattice dynamic models based on first principles calculations, we address the most popular microscopic mechanism, reduction via rattling ions. The model withstands inelastic neutron scattering and specific heat measurements, and refutes hypotheses of an anharmonic RE potential and of two distinct localized RE vibrations of disparate frequencies. It does indicate a strong hybridization between bare La vibrations and certain Sb-like phonon branches, suggesting anharmonic scattering by harmonic RE motions as an important mechanism for suppression of heat conductivity.Comment: modified version resubmitted to PRB.     In this article, I argue that the idea of articulation links three different dimensions of Stuart Hall’s work: it is central to the work of cultural politics, to the work of hegemony, and to his practice of embodied pedagogy. I claim that his approach to pedagogy entails the art of listening combined with the practice of theorising in the service of expanding who belongs to the public. This involves the work of translation, finding ways of addressing different audiences. I treat each of these aspects in turn, drawing out the salience of articulation for each and suggest that these three dimensions are themselves articulated by Hall’s commitment to the theory and practice of articulation
