A model for fluvial bedrock incision by impacting suspended and bed load sediment
A mechanistic model is derived for the rate of fluvial erosion into bedrock by abrasion from uniform size particles that impact the bed during transport in both bed and suspended load. The erosion rate is equated to the product of the impact rate, the mass loss per particle impact, and a bed coverage term. Unlike previous models that consider only bed load, the impact rate is not assumed to tend to zero as the shear velocity approaches the threshold for suspension. Instead, a given sediment supply is distributed between the bed and suspended load by using formulas for the bed load layer height, bed load velocity, logarithmic fluid velocity profile, and Rouse sediment concentration profile. It is proposed that the impact rate scales linearly with the product of the near-bed sediment concentration and the impact velocity and that particles impact the bed because of gravitational settling and advection by turbulent eddies. Results suggest, unlike models that consider only bed load, that the erosion rate increases with increasing transport stage (for a given relative sediment supply), even for transport stages that exceed the onset of suspension. In addition, erosion can occur if the supply of sediment exceeds the bed load transport capacity because a portion of the sediment load is transported in suspension. These results have implications for predicting erosion rates and channel morphology, especially in rivers with fine sediment, steep channel-bed slopes, and large flood events

Paper Session II-C - Can Robots Build a Lunar Habitat?
Developing a human habitat on the lunar surface will require an extensive infrastructure with a large number of assembled and tested components. Automating the development of this infrastructure using robotic systems would greatly reduce the cost. However, advances in the technology must be reali/.ed for robots to be used in such typical tasks as mating module and equipment interfaces and connecting umbilicals and fasteners.
This paper addresses the challenges in automating the assembly of lunar components. The specific tasks which must be automated and the corresponding technology advances required are discussed here. This is an attempt to foster discussion of the issues of automating lunar surface operations and to highlight the most critical areas of technology that must be addressed to make lunar habitation a reality
Testing fluvial erosion models using the transient response of bedrock rivers to tectonic forcing in the Apennines, Italy
The transient response of bedrock rivers to a drop in base level can be used to
discriminate between competing fluvial erosion models. However, some recent studies of
bedrock erosion conclude that transient river long profiles can be approximately
characterized by a transportâlimited erosion model, while other authors suggest that a
detachmentâlimited model best explains their field data. The difference is thought to be
due to the relative volume of sediment being fluxed through the fluvial system. Using a
pragmatic approach, we address this debate by testing the ability of endâmember fluvial
erosion models to reproduce the wellâdocumented evolution of three catchments in the
central Apennines (Italy) which have been perturbed to various extents by an
independently constrained increase in relative uplift rate. The transportâlimited model is
unable to account for the catchmentsâresponse to the increase in uplift rate, consistent with
the observed low rates of sediment supply to the channels. Instead, a detachmentâlimited
model with a threshold corresponding to the fieldâderived median grain size of the
sediment plus a slopeâdependent channel width satisfactorily reproduces the overall
convex long profiles along the studied rivers. Importantly, we find that the prefactor in the
hydraulic scaling relationship is uplift dependent, leading to landscapes responding faster
the higher the uplift rate, consistent with field observations. We conclude that a slopeâ
dependent channel width and an entrainment/erosion threshold are necessary ingredients
when modeling landscape evolution or mapping the distribution of fluvial erosion rates in
areas where the rate of sediment supply to channels is low
One-Pot Synthesis of 2-Methylfurans from 3- (Trimethylsilyl)propargyl Acetates Promoted by Trimethylsilyl Trifluoromethanesulfonate
In the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) and triethylamine, 3-(trimethylsilyl)propargyl carboxylates undergo a one-pot alkylation-cyclization- desilylation reaction with ketones to produce 2-methylfurans. Alkylation at 0 °C in methylene chloride, followed by acid-catalyzed cyclization at room temperature, provides the furans in 52-86% yield. Cyclization and desilylation appear to be promoted by triflic acid generated in situ from the exposure of the reaction mixture to water upon completion of the initial substitution reaction
Influence of Sex/Gender and Race on Responses to Raltegravir Combined With Tenofovir-Emtricitabine in Treatment-Naive Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 Infected Patients: Pooled Analyses of the STARTMRK and QDMRK Studies.
BACKGROUND: Antiretroviral therapy in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected women and blacks merits particular scrutiny because these groups have been underrepresented in clinical trials.
METHODS: To document the effects of raltegravir across sex and racial lines, we conducted a pooled subgroup analysis of the efficacy and safety of raltegravir 400 mg BID plus tenofovir-emtricitabine by sex (women vs men) and self-identified race (black vs non-black) using phase 3 studies in treatment-naive patients.
RESULTS: Study participants included 42 black women, 102 non-black women, 48 black men, and 477 non-black men. Clade B infections were less common in women (43.8%) than men (84.6%) and in blacks (45.6%) than non-blacks (80.5%). Baseline CD4 counts were â€200 cells/”L in 52.2% of blacks and 31.6% of non-blacks. Black men had the largest proportion of patients with baseline CD4 counts/”L and the highest nontreatment-related discontinuation rate among the 4 sex-by-race subgroups. Human immunodeficiency virus-ribonucleic acid levels/mL were achieved at week 48 in 92.7% (95% confidence interval [CI], 80.1-98.5) of black women, 93.6% (95% CI, 86.6-97.6) of non-black women, 82.9% (95% CI, 67.9-92.8) of black men, and 91.4% (95% CI, 88.4-93.8) of non-black men. Serious clinical adverse events were reported in 9.0% of women versus 8.8% of men and in 11.1% of blacks versus 8.5% of non-blacks.
CONCLUSIONS: In this post hoc analysis of patients with previously untreated HIV-1 infection receiving raltegravir plus tenofovir-emtricitabine, generally comparable results were achieved across sex and racial subgroups. However, black men had a lower response rate than either black women or non-black men, partially attributable to lower baseline CD4 counts and higher discontinuation rates

Modeling and design of energy concentrating laser weld joints
The application of lasers for welding and joining has increased steadily over the past decade with the advent of high powered industrial laser systems. Attributes such as high energy density and precise focusing allow high speed processing of precision assemblies. Other characteristics of the process such as poor coupling of energy due to highly reflective materials and instabilities associated with deep penetration keyhole mode welding remain as process limitations and challenges to be overcome. Reflective loss of laser energy impinging on metal surfaces can in some cases exceed ninety five percent, thus making the process extremely inefficient. Enhanced coupling of the laser beam can occur when high energy densities approach the vaporization point of the materials and form a keyhole feature which can trap laser energy and enhance melting and process efficiency. The extreme temperature, pressure and fluid flow dynamics of the keyhole make control of the process difficult in this melting regime. The authors design and model weld joints which through reflective propagation and concentration of the laser beam energy significantly enhance the melting process and weld morphology. A three dimensional computer based geometric optical model is used to describe the key laser parameters and joint geometry. Ray tracing is used to compute the location and intensity of energy absorption within the weld joint. Comparison with experimentation shows good correlation of energy concentration within the model to actual weld profiles. The effect of energy concentration within various joint geometry is described. This method for extending the design of the laser system to include the weld joint allows the evaluation and selection of laser parameters such as lens and focal position for process optimization. The design of narrow gap joints which function as energy concentrators is described. The enhanced laser welding of aluminum without keyhole formation has been demonstrated
Does a Computer have an Arrow of Time?
In [Sch05a], it is argued that Boltzmann's intuition, that the psychological
arrow of time is necessarily aligned with the thermodynamic arrow, is correct.
Schulman gives an explicit physical mechanism for this connection, based on the
brain being representable as a computer, together with certain thermodynamic
properties of computational processes. [Haw94] presents similar, if briefer,
arguments. The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the support for
the link between thermodynamics and an arrow of time for computers. The
principal arguments put forward by Schulman and Hawking will be shown to fail.
It will be shown that any computational process that can take place in an
entropy increasing universe, can equally take place in an entropy decreasing
universe. This conclusion does not automatically imply a psychological arrow
can run counter to the thermodynamic arrow. Some alternative possible explana-

Important Historical Efforts at Emergency Department Categorization in the United States and Implications for Regionalization
This article is drawn from a report created for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Emergency Department (ED) Categorization Task Force and also reflects the proceedings of a breakout session, âBeyond ED CategorizationâMatching Networks to Patient Needs,â at the 2010 Academic Emergency Medicine consensus conference, âBeyond Regionalization: Integrated Networks of Emergency Care.â The authors describe a brief history of the significant national and state efforts at categorization and suggest reasons why many of these efforts failed to persevere or gain wider implementation. The history of efforts to categorize hospital (and ED) emergency services demonstrates recognition of the potential benefits of categorization, but reflects repeated failures to implement full categorization systems or limited excursions into categorization through licensing of EDs or designation of receiving and referral facilities.
