Paper Session I-A - Employing Artificial Intelligence to Meet Space Requirements

    Get PDF
In January 1989, AFSTC began the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Initiative as a means of accomplishing two objectives: 1) to determine requirements in the Air Force space community that could best be met employing AI techniques and 2) to ensure current programs were adequate to meet these requirements. The approach was to determine requirements by surveying the users, identify current programs, and then identify redundancies and omissions for the purpose of recommending a future course of action. Ten requirements were identified as being well-suited for AI techniques. Three of these requirements were determined to have high payoff and be attainable in the near term. The three requirements are range scheduling, intelligent consoles for satellite control, and intelligent computer aided training. In identifying current projects, it was found that the majority of the space related AI work is performed by NASA. Projects at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, and Lewis Research Center were found to be directly applicable to Air Force requirements. Sharing of space-related technology is currently being addressed through the Space Technology Interdependency Group. This paper discusses the results of the AI Initiative including the ten requirements and related projects. Also discussed are the future plans for AI in AFSTC

Second Best? Trends and Linkages in the Informal Economy in South Africa

The idea of a second economy has become a feature of recent government economic policy. In this paper we focus on one important element of the second economy – the informal economy. We analyse the nature of the informal economy in South Africa, providing some descriptive statistics and analysis to highlight the nature and extent of the informal economy

Surface enhancement of oxygen exchange and diffusion in the ionic conductor La2Mo2O9

    Get PDF
Isotopic surface oxygen exchange and its subsequent diffusion have been measured using secondary ion mass spectrometry in the fast ionic conductor La2Mo2O9. A silver coating was applied to the sample surface to enhance the surface exchange process for dry oxygen. Contrary to previous studies performed using a wet atmosphere, no grain boundary diffusion tail was observed under these optimized dry exchange conditions. The activation energy for oxygen diffusion was found to be 0.66(+/- 0.09) eV at high temperature (>570 degrees C), and 1.25(+/- 0.01)eV at low temperature (<570 degrees C). Time-of-Flight secondary ion mass spectrometry was employed to investigate the correlation between the silver coating and the O-18 concentration on the sample surface. A close correlation between the presence of silver and oxygen incorporation on the surface was observed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

527 Committees and the Political Party Network

We investigate the links between 527s and other political organizations through the employment histories of 527 staff. We find that 527s are highly central to modern political party networks and are in positions to facilitate coordination within a party and to employ key party personnel. Further, we find important differences between the networks charted out by the two major parties. The Republican Party, the majority party during the period under study, had a more hierarchical network than the Democratic Party did

Synthesizing Qualitative Evidence: A Roadmap for Information Systems Research

    Get PDF
Qualitative synthesis research is an approach that consolidates the output of different qualitative studies to create new subject knowledge. Such work can help reveal more powerful explanations than that seen in a single study, thereby generating increased levels of understanding of a given phenomenon and greater research finding generalizability. Based on a review of the literature and a survey of qualitative researchers, we found that the information systems (IS) domain lacks a clear understanding of qualitative synthesis methods and, as a result, has largely failed to take advantage of this powerful, high-potential methodological opportunity. To address this shortcoming, this paper is the first to provide a rigorous overview of the full suite of 35 qualitative synthesis methods, as well as guidelines that include a three-tiered selection framework. By using the guidelines and framework in tandem, IS researchers are able to select the qualitative synthesis method most appropriate for a given research study, particularly when the research objective involves knowledge integration/aggregation, interpretation/theory development, and/or informing IS practice

Learning to laugh : children and being human in early modern thought

    Get PDF
This essay explores the construction of the human in early modern English thought, and uses discussions of the nature and use of laughter as a distinguishing feature of humanity from classical arguments as well as early modern ones. Using these classical, reformed English discussions of education and of the nature of children reveals an anxiety about the status of the child. Laughing appropriately - using tile mind and not merely the body - is a key feature of being human, and as such, the child's lack of "true' laughter reveals that child's status to be never always-already human. "Human' is a created rather than merely a natural status
