The Dynamics of Space in Moschus’ Europa

    No full text
Moschus’ Europa is set in a paradisiac landscape where the erotic encounter between a young maiden and a god disguised as a bull is perfectly possible. Three symbolic spaces, the chamber, the meadow and the sea are the foil to the story of Europa’s affair with Zeus, thus providing the key to the interpretation of the entire poem. The aim of the paper is to explore how space in combination with time, what we might call the poem’s chronotope, is consistent with its generic quality, to discuss the spatial organization of the narrative and then give a detailed analysis of the poem’s spaces and to associate space with the actual plot by focusing on the dramatic potential stemming from the spatial structuring of Moschus’ Europa

    The dark side of Euphorion

    No full text

Συμφραστικός πίνακας λέξεων στο ποιητικό έργο του Γιώργου Σεφέρη [Concordance to the poems of Georgios Seferis]

    No full text
Concordance of the poetic works of Giorgos Seferis which presents all the principal “words” of the texts in an alphabetical list, stating how often each word occurs, giving a precise location and a relevant piece of text for each occurrence. We found ca. 9500 different Greek words in 39000 different occurrences, so our concordance has 50.000 lines of text. The technical procedure required four main steps: text entry and tagging, production of the concordance, correction of the contexts, formatting for print

    The programmatic Idylls of Theocritus

    No full text
Scholars have consistently focused on Idylls 1 and 7 as ‘programmatic’ poems. Cairns, in his discussion of the first Idyll as a programmatic poem, helpfully defines such poetry as follows: A poem or part of a poem can be described as ‘programmatic’ if it is consciously composed in such a way that it contains a very high concentration of material typical of its literary form. Such a piece can be regarded as even more obviously programmatic if it contains statements about poetry and the art of writing poetry, either implicit or explicit. Such statements can sometimes involve evaluations of poetry or of several different kinds of poetry. Pieces which are ‘programmatic’ in one or more of these senses can sometimes use an agreed symbolic language. This chapter analyzes Idylls 1 and 7 from a comparable angle
