Frequency-Tunable Josephson Junction Resonator for Quantum Computing

We have fabricated and measured a high-Q Josephson junction resonator with a tunable resonance frequency. A dc magnetic flux allows the resonance frequency to be changed by over 10 %. Weak coupling to the environment allows a quality factor of ∼\thicksim7000 when on average less than one photon is stored in the resonator. At large photon numbers, the nonlinearity of the Josephson junction creates two stable oscillation states. This resonator can be used as a tool for investigating the quality of Josephson junctions in qubits below the single photon limit, and can be used as a microwave qubit readout at high photon numbers.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure

Imperial Impulses: The Influence of War and Death on the Writings of Rudyard Kipling

This historical inquiry will focus on Rudyard Kipling\u27s life, his works, and their relationship to British Imperialism. More specifically it will demonstrate how Kipling\u27s attitude changed after World War One through his works. To understand Kipling and his place in the British Empire it is essential to understand the framework of imperialism at the time. Once an understanding of imperialism is formed it is possible to get to know Kipling and the world he grew into. The circumstances of Kipling\u27s upbringing were undoubtably what drove him into his passion for empire, while his later experiences were what drove him to reconsider. Kipling was known as the staunch imperialist, and he certainly was, even his children\u27s literature had undertones of empire, and an establishment of superiority over the rest of the world. After World War One and the death of his son however there was a difference in attitude, not a reversal, but a change. A newfound distrust of government permeated his works. It is important not to judge a book by its cover or a man by his dogma. Everyone has a life filled with significant events and to understand a person one must take time to look at the persons past. The same can be said for imperialism, to judge the ideology from a modern perspective does not allow the entire truth to be told

Transition-metal free umpolung carbon-nitrogen vs. carbon-chlorine bond formation

    Get PDF
The formation of carbon-nitrogen (C–N) bonds via an umpolung substitution reaction has been achieved at -78 °C without the need for catalysts, ligands, or additives. The scope is limited to aryl Grignard reagents with N-chloroamines. The findings in this manuscript serve as a reference point for all C–N bond formation involving N-chloroamines and organometallic reagents. Knowing the yields of uncatalyzed reactions will be useful when determining the success of future catalytic methods

Is procrastination related to sleep quality? Testing an application of the procrastination-health model

    Get PDF
Despite a growing body of research on the consequences of procrastination for health and well-being, there is little research focused on testing or explaining the potential links between procrastination and sleep quality. Using the procrastination-health model as our guiding conceptual lens, we addressed this gap by examining how and why trait procrastination may be linked to various dimensions of sleep quality across two student samples. In Study 1, procrastination was associated with feeling unrested, but not sleep disturbance frequency, in a sample of Greek undergraduate students (N = 141). In Study 2, bootstrapping analysis of the indirect effects of procrastination on an index of sleep quality through perceived stress in a sample of Canadian students (N = 339) was significant supporting an extended procrastination-health model view of how chronic self-regulation failure may compromise sleep quality. Given the potential for dynamic and reciprocal relations among procrastination, stress, and sleep quality suggested by the current and other research, the ways in which procrastination may contribute to and be influenced by poor sleep quality warrants further investigation

Iron-Catalyzed Arylation of Heterocycles via Directed C–H Bond Activation

    Get PDF
The iron-catalyzed arylation of aromatic heterocycles, such as pyridines, thiophenes and furans has been achieved. The use of an imine directing group allowed for the ortho functionalization of these heterocycles with complete conversion in 15 minutes at 0 °C. Yields up to 88% were observed in the synthesis of 15 heterocyclic biaryls
