Promotion of integrated weed management for direct-seeded rice on the Gangetic Plains of India
Rice–wheat cropping is an effective use of land to maximise yields of vital cereal crops in India. However, the cropping system is facing constraints in part related to combining two crops with different growth habits and requirements. This project built on previous work to promote the adoption of direct-seeded rice, combined with appropriate weed management, to rice–wheat farmers on the Gangetic Plains of India. Field trials demonstrated that yields in direct-seeded rice can be comparable with those in transplanted systems. In the absence of weed control there is a significant reduction in yields under direct seeding, but this can be minimised with appropriate weed-management. The use of a herbicide followed by a single hand-weeding conferred a significant benefit in comparison with hand-weeding alone. The research has shown that changes in composition of the weed flora occurred under different direct-seeded crop establishment – information important to future weed-management strategies. Shortages of labour and water, coupled with the incentive for many farmers to reduce overall input costs, are likely to result in widespread adoption of direct seeding in many parts of the Gangetic Plains. The need to control weeds to protect yields will be paramount, and this project has laid a sound basis for the development and promotion of appropriate weed-management practice
A modular focal plane detector system for the heavy ion reaction analyzer at NSC, New Delhi
A detector system has been developed for the focal plane of the HIRA. It consists of two independent detectors, a low-pressure multiwire proportional counter (LP-MWPC) followed by a split-anode ionization detector. Details of the design and test results are presented. Using slow preamplifiers, the position resolution is ≥1 mm and the time resolution is estimated to be 1.5 ns for the LP-MWPC. The ionization detector gives 2.4% energy resolution for 150 MeV 28Si scattered off a gold target and the ΔZ/Z obtained for 28Si+27Al is 1/42 for Z=14. Some results for fusion and transfer studies for the 48Ti+58Ni and 28Si+68Zn systems, respectively, at energies around the Coulomb barrier, are presented to highlight the performance of the detector system
Transfer measurements for the Ti plus Ni systems at near barrier energies
Large enhancements have been observed in the sub-barrier fusion cross sections for Ti + Ni systems in our previous studies. Coupled channel calculations incorporating couplings to 2(+) and 3(-) states failed to explain these enhancements completely. A possibilty of transfer channels contributing to the residual enhancements had been suggested. In order to investigate the role of relevant transfer channels, measurements of one- and two-nucleon transfer were carried out for Ti-46,Ti-48 + Ni-64 systems. Spin-Polarized Transport Across an LaSrMnO/YBaCuO Interface: Role of Andreev Bound States
Transport across an
LaSr_{3}/YBa_{3}_{7}_{3}$/YBCO and Ag/YBCO. In all cases, YBCO is used as bottom layer to
eliminate the channel resistance and to minimize thermal effects. The observed
differential conductance re ects the role of Andreev bound states in a-b
planes, and brings out for the first time the suppression of such states by the
spin-polarized transport across the interface. The theoretical analysis of the
measured data reveals decay of the spin polarization near the LSMO surface with

Affective Man-Machine Interface: Unveiling human emotions through biosignals
As is known for centuries, humans exhibit an electrical profile. This profile is altered through various psychological and physiological processes, which can be measured through biosignals; e.g., electromyography (EMG) and electrodermal activity (EDA). These biosignals can reveal our emotions and, as such, can serve as an advanced man-machine interface (MMI) for empathic consumer products. However, such a MMI requires the correct classification of biosignals to emotion classes. This chapter starts with an introduction on biosignals for emotion detection. Next, a state-of-the-art review is presented on automatic emotion classification. Moreover, guidelines are presented for affective MMI. Subsequently, a research is presented that explores the use of EDA and three facial EMG signals to determine neutral, positive, negative, and mixed emotions, using recordings of 21 people. A range of techniques is tested, which resulted in a generic framework for automated emotion classification with up to 61.31% correct classification of the four emotion classes, without the need of personal profiles. Among various other directives for future research, the results emphasize the need for parallel processing of multiple biosignals
Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the
nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events,
Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final
state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV
polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity
asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +-
0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta
G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3

Spin asymmetry A_1^d and the spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron at low values of x and Q^2
We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry
A_1^d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g_1^d at Q^2 < 1
GeV^2 and 4*10^-5 < x < 2.5*10^-2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS
experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is
tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The
measured A_1^d and g_1^d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole
