    Application of microsatellite markers for hybrid verification and genetic analysis of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.)

    The legitimacy of parents and progenies used in crop improvement programmes is vital for any meaningful progress in selection. While acknowledging the shortcomings of controlled pollination in oil palm breeding and commercial seed production, the legitimacy of 20 oil palm progenies from the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) breeding programme was determined using 16 fluorescently-labeled microsatellite markers. The genotyping of parents and progenies was conducted by capillary electrophoresis using the ABI 3730 DNA Genetic Analyzer (Applied Biosystems, USA). Results revealed a complementary expression of the parents’ alleles in 18 out of the 20 individual progenies screened, confirming their hybridity and genetic identity. The two illegitimate progenies detected could be attributed to pollination and planting errors, respectively. A subset of three sufficiently informative loci (sMg00016, sMg00179 and sMo00102) was identified for routine quality control genotyping. The detection of illegitimate progenies provided ample evidence to substantiate the importance of assessing hybrid fidelity in breeding programmes. Furthermore, the usefulness of microsatellite markers as a reliable technique for routine assessment and unambiguous identification of oil palm crosses was established. The implications of microsatellite- based hybrid identification in oil palm varietal improvement programmes have been adequately discussed.     Abelian monopoles in lattice gluodynamics as physical objects

    By numerical calculations we show that the abelian monopole currents are locally correlated with the density of SU(2) lattice action. This fact is established for the maximal abelian projection. Thus, in the maximal abelian projection the monopoles are physical objects, they carry SU(2) action.     Service-oriented agents for collaborative industrial automation and production systems

    Service-oriented Multi-Agent Systems (SoMAS) is an approach to combine the fundamental characteristics of service-oriented and multi-agent methods into a new platform for industrial automation. Several research works already targeted the connection of these technologies, presenting different perspectives in how and why to join them. This research focuses on available efforts and solutions in the area of SoMAS and explains the idea behind the service-oriented agents in industrial automation. A SoMAS system is mainly composed by shared resources in form of services and their providing/requesting agents. The paper also discusses the required engineering aspects of these systems, from the internal anatomy to the interaction patterns. Parameters of flexibility, reconfiguration, autonomy and reduced development efforts were considered and they should be the trademark of SoMAS.     Order-Disorder Transition in a Two-Layer Quantum Antiferromagnet

    We have studied the antiferromagnetic order -- disorder transition occurring at T=0T=0 in a 2-layer quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet as the inter-plane coupling is increased. Quantum Monte Carlo results for the staggered structure factor in combination with finite-size scaling theory give the critical ratio Jc=2.51±0.02J_c = 2.51 \pm 0.02 between the inter-plane and in-plane coupling constants. The critical behavior is consistent with the 3D classical Heisenberg universality class. Results for the uniform magnetic susceptibility and the correlation length at finite temperature are compared with recent predictions for the 2+1-dimensional nonlinear σ\sigma-model. The susceptibility is found to exhibit quantum critical behavior at temperatures significantly higher than the correlation length.Comment: 11 pages (5 postscript figures available upon request), Revtex 3.

    Anomalous Cosmic Rays and their Ionization States

    Ionization states of 16 individual anomalous cosmic ray events have been determined in the anuradha cosmic ray experiment conducted onboard Spacelab-3. The geomagnetic field was used as a rigidity filter for the energetic charged particles, and the upper limit on their ionization states is obtained by using the relation Z <= M.p.c/R/sub c/. Out of 16 events, 11 are found to be singly ionized and the other five events are consistent with their being in singly ionized states. The singly ionized nature of the anomalous cosmic ray particles suggests neutrals in the local interstellar space as their source

    We show that the monopole confinement mechanism in lattice gluodynamics is a particular feature of the maximal abelian projection. We give an explicit example of the SU(2)U(1)SU(2) \rightarrow U(1) projection (the minimal abelian projection), in which the confinement is due to topological objects other than monopoles. We perform analytical and numerical study of the loop expansion of the Faddeev--Popov determinant for the maximal and the minimal abelian projections, and discuss the fundamental modular region for these projections.Comment: 16 pages (LaTeX) and 3 figures, report ITEP-94-6

    Test of renormalization predictions for universal finite-size scaling functions

    We calculate universal finite-size scaling functions for systems with an n-component order parameter and algebraically decaying interactions. Just as previously has been found for short-range interactions, this leads to a singular epsilon-expansion, where epsilon is the distance to the upper critical dimension. Subsequently, we check the results by numerical simulations of spin models in the same universality class. Our systems offer the essential advantage that epsilon can be varied continuously, allowing an accurate examination of the region where epsilon is small.     This In-Depth Study of the Pluralistic Agricultural Extension System in India is a full analysis of the pluralistic extension system in India, how it has changed over many years and the direction it is currently moving. Chapter-1 outlines the Evolution of the Pluralistic Agricultural Extension System in India and the changes that have occurred since about 1871, including the establishment of the Department of Agriculture in 1882. Following independence in 1947, many changes have happened as outlined in this first chapter, including the Community Development Program (CDP), the Intensive Agricultural District Program (IADP), including dissemination of high-yielding varieties during the Green Revolution, the Training and Visit (T&V) approach and then the move to the decentralized, farmer-led and market driven approach influenced by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) model. Chapter-2 gives an Overview of the Public Extension System within the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the State Departments of Agriculture and then provides more detailed information about the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and the public extension system in India. It starts with an overview of the organizational structure at the national level, including the Department of Agricultural Research and Extension (DARE), then into the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation (DAC) and Directorate of Extension within DAC. Then, it moves into the KVKs, which are a critical linkage at the district level between research, extension and farmers. In short, KVKs focus on the specific agro-ecological conditions within each district and then, after conducting research on these different crops, livestock and other farming systems. Then it moves into the development of the ATMA model through two World Bank projects, which is now expand across all Indian districts. Chapter-3 outlines the Directorates of Extension Education within each State Agricultural Universities (SAUs). India is unique in having Extension units established within each SAU, since this extension approach was first introduced by selected US Land Grant Universities into these SAUs in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This chapter outlines the historical development of the extension within each SAU and then outlines the mandate, organizational structure, human resources and methods used within these SAUs and their relationship with the public extension system. Chapter-4 outlines the Private Sector Advisory Services being provided in India, especially in the provision of good advisory services through private Agri-Business Companies through the sale of inputs to farmers. In India, there are over 280,000 input supply firms, but many do not have sufficient knowledge and experience in providing good advisory services to farmers. At first, the public and private sector did not want to work together but through the ATMA approach, the public and private sector started working together and then, in 2004, the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE) started training and giving diplomas to the participants from these private sector firms, especially in Andhra Pradesh (see: http://www.manage.gov.in/daesi/daesi.htm). Chapter-5 summarizes the role and activities of the different Commodity Boards currently operating in India, including: Central Silk Board (CSB), Coconut Development Board (CDB), Coffee Board, Coir Board, Rubber Board, Spices Board, Tea Board, Tobacco Board, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), National Horticulture Board (NHB), Cashew Export Promotion Council (CEPC), National Jute Board (NJB), and the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) and how each of these boards carry out extension and advisory services to the farmers being served. Chapter-6 outlines the Institutional Mechanism for Capacity Building to strengthen the pluralistic extension system in India. This chapter starts with an overview of the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), which is an autonomous organization that has had the most impact on strengthening the extension system in India. Next, it discusses the paradigm shift within the National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NAIM) in India; and then outlines the role of the Extension Education Institutes (EEIs). Finally, it moves to outline the role and structure of the State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institutes (SAMETIs), especially in strengthening the ATMA model in India. Chapter-7 is the conclusion chapter that outlines the Strengths and Weaknesses of India’s Pluralistic Extension System. It starts by outlining the Policy Framework and Reforms for strengthening the pluralistic extension system in India. Next, it outlines how to strengthen research-extension linkages as well as capacity building among extension workers. Next, it addresses how to empower farmers, including women farmers. It also outlines the use of Information Technology (IT) and how to strengthen it through different approaches. This chapter also outlines the changing role of government in extension and how the ATMA model can be strengthened following very specific details. The other issue is how to strengthen the SAMETIs, since they still need to be strengthened in providing service to district and block level extension workers. This chapter ends with a brief summary the key role that the public extension system can play in India

    An Experience of designing supports in newly opened Belgaon Underground coal mine

    Belgaon block is located in the northern most ends of explored coal block of the eastern limb of Wardha Valley Coalfields (WVC). WVC is well known for its complexity like complex geological structures, strata control problems while dealing with thick coal seam, fire and water problem etc. The Belgon mine of SUNFLAG is however separated from Majra block in the south by a down throw fault. Designing of road ways and junction support in newly opened underground coal mine was a challenge due to its complex geology. To arrive at suitable support system, various experiments using cement as well as resin bolting were carried out. The pulls out tests were carried out on rock bolts grouted with cement as well as resin. The proposed paper deals with significance and importance of resin grout over cement and other issues related to strata control etc

    Gluodynamics in external field in dual superconductor approach

    We show that gluodynamics in an external Abelian electromagnetic field should possess a deconfining phase transition at zero temperature. Our analytical estimation of the critical external field is based on the dual superconductor picture which is formulated in the Euclidean space suitable for lattice calculations. A dual superconductor model corresponding to the SU(2) gluodynamics possesses confinement and deconfinement phases below and, respectively, above the critical field. A dual superconductor model for the SU(3) gauge theory predicts a rich phase structure containing confinement, asymmetric confinement and deconfinement phases. The quark bound states in these phases are analyzed. Inside the baryon the strings are Y--shaped as predicted by the dual superconductor picture. This shape is geometrically asymmetric in the asymmetric confinement phases.
