There are various quantitative studies have been conducted both nationally as well as internationally that revealed the effectiveness of social skills training in schizophrenia. However, very few qualitative studies have been conducted to measure the relevance of social skills training in schizophrenia. The present study investigated the effectiveness of six months social skills training program with 5 inpatients chronic schizophrenia, conducted for one and half an hour in a week. Employing phenomenological approach, psychosocial assessment was done on the basis of interviews, observations, role-plays, and work assignments, which was analyzed using Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen Method of phenomenology. The social skills training resulted in decreasing social anxiety and enhancing social functioning as maintaining personal hygiene, significant gain in adherence to medications, making request, expressing feeling, and sorting out problematic issues that sustained up to 18 months following intervention. It has been effective in changing the patient’s behaviors and boosted their capacity to confront problematic situations, but weaker effects were found for auditory hallucination in one of the patients

The problem of ageing is experienced by all the countries. According to World Health statistics the life expectancy of Nepalese people has risen from 58.91 years to 67.86 years (1996 to 2015). Ageing is emerging issue in Nepal as well as global. Its tempo is expected to be unexpectedly fast as mortality continues to decline and life expectancy continues to increase. Ayurveda the science of life has observed ageing as a Jara avastha, which is a later phase of life, it is natural, inevitable phenomenon, in which maximum decline of bodily elements that may become as major cause of disability and functional dependency requiring services that affect many sectors of economy, health, security, income, housing, transportation etc. Jara chikitsa has been mentioned as one independent Anga in Ashtanga Ayurveda where Rasayana therapy is capable to impede the ageing process and to delay the degenerative process in the body. In this study we measured the effectiveness of Ashwagandha rasayana and Matra basti and compared with the Ashwagandha Rasayan only in Jara avastha. A total of thirty elderly patients were selected and divided in two groups A and B, given them either Ashwagandha Rasayana with Matra basti or Ashwagandha rasayana in prescribed doses for 45 days. Changes in the subjective complaints, objective parameters of the patients and appearance of adverse events were also evaluated. Both the groups provided better results on the chief complaints But, comparison in between both the groups is insignificant, that may be due to small sample size

A CRITICAL APPRAISAL ON AGEING PROCESS IN AYURVEDA

Ayurveda being essentially the science of life and longevity narrates all aspects of life and puts special emphasis on Jara (ageing). The world population of the elderly is increasing and by the year 2030, older persons are projected to account for one in six people globally. Ageing is a process of unfavorable progressive changes associated with decline in vigor and ending in death. It is an irreversible and inevitable process and has multidimensional aspects. Everyone must undergo this phase of life at his/her own life. In Ayurveda, Jara (ageing) is clearly defined as that which has lost age means become old by the act of degeneration of bodily tissues and organs. It is described of two types- Kalaja jara and Akalaja jara. The Kalaja jara (timely ageing) can be regarded as chronological ageing where Dhatukshaya occurs whereas the Akalajajara (premature ageing) which occurs untimely i.e., before its prescribed time it can be regarded as biological ageing and is more intense than that of the chronological ageing. Several concepts are reported in Ayurveda regarding ageing process e.g, decade wise ageing process is described by Acharya Vagbhat and Sharangdhara. According to them one particular bodily feature is being degraded by each decade of lifespan, in the same way multiple theories are also analyzed in contemporary science. The whole biology of ageing has been dealt in present article within the Ayurvedic frame

Vijayasar (Pterocarpus marsupium) has been mentioned in Charak Samhita, as a remedy for Madhumeha (Diabetes Mellitus). A study conducted by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) revealed that the hypoglycemic effects of Vijayasar are comparable to that of tolbutamide. Karela (Mormordica charantia) is another herb used in Madhumeha and it is a routinely used vegetable in Nepal. In this study we measured the effectiveness of Karela in patients of Madhumeha and compared with that of Vijayasar. A total of sixty four patients diagnosed with Madhumeha (Fasting Blood Glucose ≄126mg/dl or Post Prandial Blood Glucose≄200mg/dl) were given either Karela or Vijayasar powder two times a day for one month, along with dietary and lifestyle advices and their blood glucose levels were measured before initiating treatment and after one month of treatment. Changes in the subjective complaints of Madhumeha like Prabhutamutrata, Avilmutrata, etc. and appearance of adverse events were also evaluated. Randomization of treatment was done and dosage was titrated on the basis of glycemic control and duration of Madhumeha. The mean reductions in fasting blood glucose and post prandial blood glucose in Karela treated group are 60.83 mg/dl and 79.74 mg/dl respectively and that in Vijayasar treated. Karela is a safe and effective medicine in the management of Madhumeha and it is as effective as Vijayasar

In this dissemination, a glueless compact dual port dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is proposed for X-band applications. A prototype has been fabricated with RT Duroid substrate and Eccostock (Ï”r = 10)-made DRA. The ring shaped DRA is excited by aperture coupled feeds maintaining symmetry between both the ports. Four cylindrical copper rods with four strips have been used to fix the DRA on the substrate and provide additional mechanical stability. Eight copper strips are used to provide impedance matching and impedance bandwidth (IBW) widening. The measured IBW of dual port DRA is 10.5% (8.05–8.95 GHz) and maximum gain of radiator is 6.2 dBi. The proposed antenna becomes compact when the net volume of DRA is approximately 3.5 cm3 and the volume of the substrate is 2.88 cm3, with a surface area of 36 cm2 and operating in X-band, which finds applications in satellite communication, weather radar, synthetic aperture radar, and telemetry tracking and control

Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. Once considered a problem only in high income countries, overweight and obesity are now dramatically on the rise in low and middle-income countries, particularly in urban settings. A person with a BMI of 30 or more is generally considered obese. A person with a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered overweight. Medodhatuvridhi causes Snigdhata of Shareera, Udara-parshvavridhi, Kasa, Shwasa, Hikka and Daurgandhya of Shareera. The Medovaha Srotas moola means the organs closely related to the functions of Medodhatu or the important sites related to beginning or ending of the channels of Medodhatu. The Acharya (Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata) considered Vrikka as Moola of Medovaha Srotas and also considered Vapavahana, Kati and Mamsa as second Moola respectively. The present study was conducted on 30 clinically diagnosed patients of 'Medoroga' (Obesity). The patients of ‘Medoroga’ (Obesity) were randomly divided into three groups of 10 patients in each. In Group A, 10 patients were treated with ‘Navakaguggulu’ 2 tab (each tab. of 500mg) three times a day with lukewarm water for 30 days. In Group B, 10 patients were treated with ‘Triphala Kwatha’ 50ml two times a day (morning and evening) for 30 days and in Group C, 10 patients were treated with ‘Navakaguggulu’ 2 tab (each tab. of 500 mg) three times a day with lukewarm water and ‘Triphala Kwatha’ 50ml two times a day (morning and evening) for 30 days. After completion of trial, Group C has shown the best result followed by Group A and B while in lab parameters Group A has shown highly significant result only in Triglyceride level. Similarly Group Cprovided better results in majority of the parameters

The Shalya tantra, a prime branch of Astanga Ayurveda is rich in much aspect of modern surgical concepts. Sushruta elaborately described the advances of the Tantra in various Ano-rectal diseases, as Arsha is one among them. The term ‘Arsha’ is derived from “Ru Gatau” Dhatu with the suffix “Asun”, gives the meaning of as violent as enemy. It is the commonest ano rectal disease and affects anyone at any time. In Ayurveda, the sufficient descriptions are described regarding etiology, pathology, symptomatology, types and management or treatment measures of Arsha. All the classics of Ayurveda enumerate that the present sedentary life style, irregularities in food intake, taking junk, spicy, non-fibrous foods, inactive occupation and mental stress etc., are causative factors for ‘Arsha' (Hemorrhoid) and that leads to hypo function of digestive enzymes, which in turn leads to constipation, itching, burning sensation and pain in the region of Guda and finally bleeds and thus Arsharoga originates. Acharyas described various Chikitsa modalities of Arsha critically for prevention and cure of Arsha along with avoiding causative factors (Nidanaparivarjana). Acharya Sushruta has described four dimensions of the treatment for Arsha, all these are applied on the basis of Dosha involvement and stages of Arsha like Bheshaja Karma, Shastra Karma, Kshara Karma, Agni Karma, similarly Snehana, Swedana, Vamana, Virechana, Asthapana and Anuvasana Basti for Vataja Arsha, Virechana for Pittaj Arsha, Aharadravya mixed with Sunthi and kulatha for Kaphaj Arsha and Shamana Chikitsa for Raktaj Arsha etc

According to AcharyaSushruta, in the presence of the Etiological factors the dosha get vitiated and provoked all the three Doshas spread out of their place and vitiate the RasaDhatu in the heart. Vitiate Rasa Dhatu (body lymph /chyle) manifestation of various types of pain is being produced, which is called ‘Hridbadha’ or Hridroga. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most important cause of global death, accounting for 17.3 million deaths per year, a number that is expected to grow to more than 23.6 million by 2030. Aim and objectives-Diagnosis and treatment of Hridroga through Ayurveda and its modern correlation.Mode ofAction of Hridyadrugs promoting heart’s health.Improper diet (excessive intake of Kshar, Lavana Rasa, Virudahbhojana) and Vegadharna, Chinta,Krodhaetc. are few among the many causes of Hridroga. In understanding symptomology of cardiovasculardisorder, it should be noted thatVaivarnya (Panduta /Shweta/Shyava) can be correlated to pallor and cyanosis, Murcchato Syncope, Kasato cough with or without Hemoptysis, Shwasato breathlessness or dyspnea, Ruja to Chest pain or discomfort. Drugs used in various formulations in Hridrogahaveproperties like Pachana, Deepana, Hridya, Anulomana,Rasayana and Krimihara. So, in present article an effort has been made to explain the heart disease and its management through Ayurveda as well as modern medicine
