    The empathic brain: how, when and why?

    Recent imaging results suggest that individuals automatically share the emotions of others when exposed to their emotions. We question the assumption of the automaticity and propose a contextual approach, suggesting several modulatory factors that might influence empathic brain responses. Contextual appraisal could occur early in emotional cue evaluation, which then might or might not lead to an empathic brain response, or not until after an empathic brain response is automatically elicited. We propose two major roles for empathy; its epistemological role is to provide information about the future actions of other people, and important environmental properties. Its social role is to serve as the origin of the motivation for cooperative and prosocial behavior, as well as help for effective social communication

    Landau Gauge Fixing supported by Genetic Algorithm

    A class of algorithms for the Landau gauge fixing is proposed, which makes the steepest ascent (SA) method be more efficient by concepts of genetic algorithm. Main concern is how to incorporate random gauge transformation (RGT) %, mutation in genetic algorithm (GA) terminology, to gain higher achievement of the minimal Landau gauge fixing, and to keep lower time consumption. One of these algorithms uses the block RGT, and another uses RGT controlled by local fitness density, and the last uses RGT determined by Ising Monte Carlo process. We tested these algorithms on SU(2) lattice gauge theory in 4 dimension with small ÎČ\betas, 2.0, 1.75 and 1.5, and report improvements in hit rate and/or in time consumption, compared to other methods.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures LATTICE'99(ALGORITHM

    Axiomatizations of Lov\'asz extensions of pseudo-Boolean functions

    Three important properties in aggregation theory are investigated, namely horizontal min-additivity, horizontal max-additivity, and comonotonic additivity, which are defined by certain relaxations of the Cauchy functional equation in several variables. We show that these properties are equivalent and we completely describe the functions characterized by them. By adding some regularity conditions, these functions coincide with the Lov\'asz extensions vanishing at the origin, which subsume the discrete Choquet integrals. We also propose a simultaneous generalization of horizontal min-additivity and horizontal max-additivity, called horizontal median-additivity, and we describe the corresponding function class. Additional conditions then reduce this class to that of symmetric Lov\'asz extensions, which includes the discrete symmetric Choquet integrals

    The continuum limit of the lattice Gribov problem, and a solution based on Hodge decomposition

    We study gauge fixing via the standard local extremization algorithm for 2-dimensional U(1)U(1). On a lattice with spherical topology S2S^2 where all copies are lattice artifacts, we find that the number of these 'Gribov' copies diverges in the continuum limit. On a torus, we show that lattice artifacts can lead to the wrong evaluation of the gauge-invariant correlation length, when measured via a gauge-fixed procedure; this bias does not disappear in the continuum limit. We then present a new global approach, based on Hodge decomposition of the gauge field, which produces a unique smooth field in Landau gauge, and is economically powered by the FFT.     The evolution, distribution and diversity of endogenous circoviral elements in vertebrate genomes

    Circoviruses (family Circoviridae) are small, non-enveloped viruses that have short, single-stranded DNA genomes. Circovirus sequences are frequently recovered in metagenomic investigations, indicating that these viruses are widespread, yet they remain relatively poorly understood. Endogenous circoviral elements (CVe) are DNA sequences derived from circoviruses that occur in vertebrate genomes. CVe are a useful source of information about the biology and evolution of circoviruses. In this study, we screened 362 vertebrate genome assemblies in silico to generate a catalog of CVe loci. We identified a total of 179 CVe sequences, most of which have not been reported previously. We show that these CVe loci reflect at least 19 distinct germline integration events. We determine the structure of CVe loci, identifying some that show evidence of potential functionalization. We also identify orthologous copies of CVe in snakes, fish, birds, and mammals, allowing us to add new calibrations to the timeline of circovirus evolution. Finally, we observed that some ancient CVe group robustly with contemporary circoviruses in phylogenies, with all sequences within these groups being derived from the same host class or order, implying a hitherto underappreciated stability in circovirus-host relationships. The openly available dataset constructed in this investigation provides new insights into circovirus evolution, and can be used to facilitate further studies of circoviruses and CVe

    Comparison of stroke volume measurement between non-invasive bioreactance and esophageal Doppler in patients undergoing major abdominal-pelvic surgery

    PURPOSE: Bioreactance is a non-invasive technology for measuring stroke volume (SV) in the operating room and critical care setting. We evaluated how the NICOM¼ bioreactance device performed against the CardioQ¼ esophageal Doppler monitor in patients undergoing major abdominal–pelvic surgery, focusing on the effect of different hemodynamic interventions. METHODS: SVNICOM and SVODM were simultaneously measured intraoperatively, including before and after interventions including fluid challenge, vasopressor boluses, peritoneal gas insufflation/removal, and Trendelenburg/reverse Trendelenburg patient positioning. RESULTS: A total of 768 values were collected from 21 patients. Pre- and post-intervention measures were recorded on 155 occasions. Bland–Altman analysis revealed a bias of 8.6 ml and poor precision with wide limits of agreement (54 and −37 ml) and a percentage error of 50.6%. No improvement in precision was detected after taking into account repeated measurements for each patient (bias: 8 ml; limits of agreement: 74 and −59 ml). Concordance between changes in SVNICOM and SVODM before and after interventions was also poor: 78.7% (all measures), 82.4% (after vasopressor administration), and 74.3% (after fluid challenge). Using Doppler SV as the reference technique, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve assessing the ability of the NICOM device to predict fluid responsiveness was 0.81 (0.7–0.9). CONCLUSIONS: In patients undergoing major abdomino-pelvic surgery, SV values obtained by NICOM showed neither clinically or statistically acceptable agreement with those obtained by esophageal Doppler. Although, in the setting of this study, bioreactance technology cannot reliably replace esophageal Doppler monitoring, its accuracy for predicting fluid responsiveness was higher, up to approximately 80%

    A taxonomic synopsis of Dorstenia (Moraceae) in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Southern Brazil, is presented. Three species were recorded: D. brasiliensis, D. carautae, a new record for the state of RS, and D. tenuis. All species are described and illustrated through detailed photos of living specimens. A taxonomic key to separate the species, as well as details on distribution, overall phenology, habitat, conservation status and ecology are presented
