The interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons
We prove that the asymptotic field of a Skyrme soliton of any degree has a
non-trivial multipole expansion. It follows that every Skyrme soliton has a
well-defined leading multipole moment. We derive an expression for the linear
interaction energy of well-separated Skyrme solitons in terms of their leading
multipole moments. This expression can always be made negative by suitable
rotations of one of the Skyrme solitons in space and iso-space.We show that the
linear interaction energy dominates for large separation if the orders of the
Skyrme solitons' multipole moments differ by at most two. In that case there
are therefore always attractive forces between the Skyrme solitons.Comment: 27 pages amslate
Determination of lunar ilmentite abundances from remotely sensed data
The mapping of ilmenite on the surface of the moon is a necessary precursor to the investigation of prospective lunar base sites. Telescopic observations of the moon using a variety of narrow bandpass optical interference filters are being performed as a preliminary means of achieving this goal. Specifically, ratios of images obtained using filters centered at 0.40 and 0.56 microns provide quantitative estimates of TiO2 abundances. Analysis of preliminary distribution maps of TiO2 concentrations allows identification of specific high-Ti areas. Investigations of these areas using slit spectra in the range 0.03 to 0.85 microns are underway to search for discrete spectral signatures attributable to ilmenite
Mining Missing Hyperlinks from Human Navigation Traces: A Case Study of Wikipedia
Hyperlinks are an essential feature of the World Wide Web. They are
especially important for online encyclopedias such as Wikipedia: an article can
often only be understood in the context of related articles, and hyperlinks
make it easy to explore this context. But important links are often missing,
and several methods have been proposed to alleviate this problem by learning a
linking model based on the structure of the existing links. Here we propose a
novel approach to identifying missing links in Wikipedia. We build on the fact
that the ultimate purpose of Wikipedia links is to aid navigation. Rather than
merely suggesting new links that are in tune with the structure of existing
links, our method finds missing links that would immediately enhance
Wikipedia's navigability. We leverage data sets of navigation paths collected
through a Wikipedia-based human-computation game in which users must find a
short path from a start to a target article by only clicking links encountered
along the way. We harness human navigational traces to identify a set of
candidates for missing links and then rank these candidates. Experiments show
that our procedure identifies missing links of high quality
Langevin Trajectories between Fixed Concentrations
We consider the trajectories of particles diffusing between two infinite
baths of fixed concentrations connected by a channel, e.g. a protein channel of
a biological membrane. The steady state influx and efflux of Langevin
trajectories at the boundaries of a finite volume containing the channel and
parts of the two baths is replicated by termination of outgoing trajectories
and injection according to a residual phase space density. We present a
simulation scheme that maintains averaged fixed concentrations without creating
spurious boundary layers, consistent with the assumed physics
Analysis of pyroxene absorptions observed in Martian dark regions
We have investigated the mineralogy of the Martian dark regions by analysis of the pyroxene Fe(2+) absorption band near 1.0 micron in a set of VIS/NIR reflectance spectral images. The data used for these analyses were selected from a larger set, extending from 0.44 to 1.02 microns, obtained during the close 1988 opposition and covering substantially all of Mars south of 40 degrees N. This data set is being used in regional mapping of spectral parameters related to surface mineralogy. Martian dark regions are of interest in reconstructing the geologic history because they contain exposures of unaltered or little-altered basaltic crustal material; mapping differences in composition among dark regions could reveal regional or temporal variation in magmatic activity or mantle source composition. Two types of dark regions are seen, with the pyroxene band present and absent; where present, the inferred composition is in the range pigeonite-augite to very high-Fe, low-Ca pyroxene, with a two-pyroxene mixture possible

Newswork within a Culture of Job Insecurity: Producing News amidst Organizational and Industry Uncertainty
Rapid change in the news industry and the prevalence of layoffs, buyouts, and closings have led many newsworkers to experience job insecurity and worry about their long-term futures in journalism. Our research uses a case study of employees at an independently owned media company in the United States to explore the various ways newsworkers respond to this culture of job insecurity and how their responses affect efforts to change news practices. Findings demonstrate that those who believe their jobs are at risk are unlikely to change their practices and even some who perceive job security are reticent to initiate change. As a result, the culture of job insecurity in the news industry has a limiting effect on changes to journalism practice
Rare charm meson decays D->Pl^+l^- and c->ul^+l^- in SM and MSSM
We study the nine possible rare charm meson decays D->Pl^+l^-
(P=pi,K,eta,eta') using the Heavy Meson Chiral Lagrangians and find them to be
dominated by the long distance contributions. The decay D^+ -> pi^+l^+l^- with
the branching ratio 1*10^(-6) is expected to have the best chances for an early
experimental discovery. The short distance contribution in the five Cabibbo
suppressed channels arises via the c->ul^+l^- transition; we find that this
contribution is detectable only in the D->pi l^+l^- decay, where it dominates
the differential spectrum at high-q^2. The general Minimal Supersymmetric
Standard Model can enhance the c->ul^+l^- rate by up to an order of magnitude;
its effect on the D->Pl^+l^- rates is small since the c->ul^+l^- enhancement is
sizable in low-q^2 region, which is inhibited in the hadronic decay.Comment: 17 page
A Case Study of On-the-Fly Wide-Field Radio Imaging Applied to the Gravitational-wave Event GW 151226
We apply a newly-developed On-the-Fly mosaicing technique on the NSF's Karl
G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) at 3 GHz in order to carry out a sensitive
search for an afterglow from the Advanced LIGO binary black hole merger event
GW 151226. In three epochs between 1.5 and 6 months post-merger we observed a
100 sq. deg region, with more than 80% of the survey region having a RMS
sensitivity of better than 150 uJy/beam, in the northern hemisphere having a
merger containment probability of 10%. The data were processed in
near-real-time, and analyzed to search for transients and variables. No
transients were found but we have demonstrated the ability to conduct blind
searches in a time-frequency phase space where the predicted afterglow signals
are strongest. If the gravitational wave event is contained within our survey
region, the upper limit on any late-time radio afterglow from the merger event
at an assumed mean distance of 440 Mpc is about 1e29 erg/s/Hz. Approximately
1.5% of the radio sources in the field showed variability at a level of 30%,
and can be attributed to normal activity from active galactic nuclei. The low
rate of false positives in the radio sky suggests that wide-field imaging
searches at a few Gigahertz can be an efficient and competitive search
strategy. We discuss our search method in the context of the recent afterglow
detection from GW 170817 and radio follow-up in future gravitational wave
