Career progress and career barriers: Women MBA graduates in Canada and the UK
This article explores the career progress of female MBA graduates in Canada and the UK and the nature of career barriers experienced in each context. Results suggest that while Canadian women have similar career profiles to men, women in the UK lag behind their male counterparts after graduation from the course. At the same time, UK women encounter more intractable career barriers in the form of negative attitudes and prejudice. A model of the ‘MBA effect’ is proposed in terms of how the qualification may impact on career barriers. This incorporates three different types of barriers which are seen to operate at the individual level (person centred barriers) and at the intermediate/organizational level (organizational culture and attitudes, corporate practices) as well as, at the macro level, the impact of legislative frameworks. Results from the UK and Canadian surveys are discussed in relation to this model and in the context of feminist theory and women in management literature

An extreme paucity of second population AGB stars in the normal globular cluster M4
Galactic Globular clusters (GCs) are now known to harbour multiple stellar
populations, which are chemically distinct in many light element abundances. It
is becoming increasingly clear that asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in GCs
show different abundance distributions in light elements compared to those in
the red giant branch (RGB) and other phases, skewing toward more primordial,
field-star-like abundances, which we refer to as subpopulation one (SP1). As
part of a larger program targeting giants in GCs, we obtained high-resolution
spectra for a sample of 106 RGB and 15 AGB stars in Messier 4 (NGC 6121) using
the 2dF+HERMES facility on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. In this Letter we
report an extreme paucity of AGB stars with [Na/O] > -0.17 in M4, which
contrasts with the RGB that has abundances up to [Na/O] =0.55. The AGB
abundance distribution is consistent with all AGB stars being from SP1. This
result appears to imply that all subpopulation two stars (SP2; Na-rich, O-poor)
avoid the AGB phase. This is an unexpected result given M4's horizontal branch
morphology -- it does not have an extended blue horizontal branch. This is the

Experimental and numerical investigations of flow structure and momentum transport in a turbulent buoyancy-driven flow inside a tilted tube.
Buoyancy-driven turbulent mixing of fluids of slightly different densities [At = Δρ/(2〈ρ〉) = 1.15×10−2] in a long circular tube tilted at an angle θ = 15° from the vertical is studied at the local scale, both experimentally from particle image velocimetry and laser induced fluorescence measurements in the vertical diametrical plane and numerically throughout the tube using direct numerical simulation. In a given cross section of the tube, the axial mean velocity and the mean concentration both vary linearly with the crosswise distance z from the tube axis in the central 70% of the diameter. A small crosswise velocity component is detected in the measurement plane and is found to result from a four-cell mean secondary flow associated with a nonzero streamwise component of the vorticity. In the central region of the tube cross section, the intensities of the three turbulent velocity fluctuations are found to be strongly different, that of the streamwise fluctuation being more than twice larger than that of the spanwise fluctuation which itself is about 50% larger than that of the crosswise fluctuation. This marked anisotropy indicates that the turbulent structure is close to that observed in homogeneous turbulent shear flows. Still in the central region, the turbulent shear stress dominates over the viscous stress and reaches a maximum on the tube axis. Its crosswise variation is approximately accounted for by a mixing length whose value is about one-tenth of the tube diameter. The momentum exchange in the core of the cross section takes place between its lower and higher density parts and there is no net momentum exchange between the core and the near-wall regions. A sizable part of this transfer is due both to the mean secondary flow and to the spanwise turbulent shear stress. Near-wall regions located beyond the location of the extrema of the axial velocity (|z|≳0.36 d) are dominated by viscous stresses which transfer momentum toward (from) the wall near the top (bottom) of the tube
Effects of exoplanetary gravity on human locomotor ability
At some point in the future, if mankind hopes to settle planets outside the
Solar System, it will be crucial to determine the range of planetary conditions
under which human beings could survive and function. In this article, we apply
physical considerations to future exoplanetary biology to determine the
limitations which gravity imposes on several systems governing the human body.
Initially, we examine the ultimate limits at which the human skeleton breaks
and muscles become unable to lift the body from the ground. We also produce a
new model for the energetic expenditure of walking, by modelling the leg as an
inverted pendulum. Both approaches conclude that, with rigorous training,
humans could perform normal locomotion at gravity no higher than 4
