    The interaction between exchange rates and stock princes: An Australian context.

    The aim of this paper is to examine the interaction between stock prices and exchange rates in Australia. During the period of the study, the value of the stock market increased by two-thirds and the Australian dollar exchange rate appreciated by almost one-third. The empirical analysis employed provides evidence of a positive co-integrating relationship between these variables, with Granger causality found to run from stock prices to the exchange rate during the sample period. Although commodity prices have not been included, the significance of the results lends support to the notion that these two key financial variables interacted in a manner consistent with the portfolio balance model, that is, stock price movements cause changes in the exchange rate. This challenges the traditional view of the Australian economy as export-dependent, and also suggests that the Australian stock market has the depth annd liquidity to adequately compete for both domestic and international capital against other larger markets

    Assessment of a prototype sunphotometer for network applications, phase 1

    Data taken in Tucson, AZ, for comparing the CE sunphotometer's results against the Univ. of Arizona's no. 3 solar radiometer are in very good agreement. The spectral voltage intercepts obtained on 15 different days taken with the CE instrument during a seven week period are stable and follow the same daily trends as the voltage intercepts for similar wavelengths contained in the Univ. of Arizona's no. 3 radiometer. The spectral optical depths obtained from both instruments are also in very good agreement and follow the same trends. The only problem that exists in the CE instrument does not have a heater to stabilize the detector temperature which is important around 1000 nm. Zenith sky radiance scans are in good agreement, but both instruments are biased by direct solar rays entering the instrument's respective entrance apertures. All diffuse light data shown were, therefore, taken with the instruments shielded from the direct sun. The CE sunphotometer results pertaining to the water vapor wavelength's are also in good agreement with the Univ. of Arizona's no. 3 and should prove useful for water vapor retrieval

    Applying a Dynamic Model of Consumer Choice to Guide Brand Development at Jetstar Airways

    This paper describes the use of a marketing science model by Jetstar, a subsidiary of Australia's leading airline, Qantas, to effectively and profitably compete in the low-cost carrier marketplace. We trace the evolution of the Jetstar strategy from a baseline calibration of its initial position, to its efforts to attain price competitiveness and service parity, followed by its highly focused, cost-effective service delivery strategy. We develop a hierarchical model with parameters estimated at the individual level. This allows us to study not only how service design and pricing initiatives shift the perceived performance of Jetstar relative to its competitors but also how the airline can move market preferences toward areas in which it has competitive advantage. The contribution of the research is substantial. The Jetstar market share went from 14.0% to 18.1% during the first five quarterly waves of the research, and profits went from 79millionin2006−2007,beforethestudywascommissioned,to79 million in 2006-2007, before the study was commissioned, to 124 million in 2008-2009

    In this article we report the first known linear liquid-crystalline hexamer and in doing so demonstrate that higher oligomers and main chain polymers, with chemical structures based upon dimers and bimesogens, can exhibit the topical twist-bend ‘nematic’ mesophase. In doing so we find that there is continuation of properties and structures across the spectrum from dimer to polymer and possibly to macroscale objects such as helical flagella. This finding highlights the cross over from nanoscience based mainly on electrostatics and other non-covalent interactions to macroscience based mainly on molecular topology, density of packing, and minimisation of the free energy

    Zonal organization of the climbing fiber projection to the flocculus and nodulus of the rabbit: A combined axonal tracing and acetylcholinesterase histochemical study

    The localization and termination of olivocerebellar fibers in the flocculus and nodulus of the rabbit were studied with anterograde axonal transport methods [wheatgerm agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) and tritiated leucine] and correlated with the compartments in the white matter of these lobules delineated with acetylcholinesterase histochemistry (Tan et al. J. Comp. Neurol., 1995, this issue). Olivocerebellar fibers originating from the caudal dorsal cap travel through floccular compartments FC2 and FC4 to terminate as climbing fibers in floccular zones FZII and FZIV. Fibers from the rostral dorsal cap and the ventrolateral outgrowth traverse compartments FC1 and FC3, which are interleaved with compartments FC2 and FC4, and terminate in zones FZI and FZIII. Fibers from the rostral pole of the medial accessory olive traverse the C2 compartment and terminate in the C2 zone. FZI-II

    Normal ventral telencephalic expression of Pax6 is required for normal development of thalamocortical axons in embryonic mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In addition to its well-known expression in dorsal telencephalic progenitor cells, where it regulates cell proliferation and identity, the transcription factor Pax6 is expressed in some ventral telencephalic cells, including many postmitotic neurons. Its functions in these cells are unknown.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We generated a new floxed allele of <it>Pax6 </it>and tested the consequences of a highly specific ventral telencephalic depletion of Pax6. We used the <it>Six3</it><sup><it>A1A2</it></sup>-<it>Cre </it>allele that drives production of Cre recombinase in a specific region of Pax6-expression close to the internal capsule, through which thalamic axons navigate to cerebral cortex. Depletion in this region caused many thalamic axons to take aberrant routes, either failing to turn normally into ventral telencephalon to form the internal capsule or exiting the developing internal capsule ventrally. We tested whether these defects might have resulted from abnormalities of two structural features proposed to guide thalamic axons into and through the developing internal capsule. First, we looked for the early pioneer axons that project from the region of the future internal capsule to the thalamus and are thought to guide thalamocortical axons to the internal capsule: we found that they are present in conditional mutants. Second, we examined the development of the corridor of Islet1-expressing cells that guides thalamic axons through ventral telencephalon and found that it was broader and less dense than normal in conditional mutants. We also examined corticofugal axons that are thought to interact with ascending thalamocortical axons, resulting in each set providing guidance to the other, and found that some are misrouted to lateral telencephalon.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These findings indicate that ventral telencephalic Pax6 is important for formation of the Islet1-expressing corridor and the thalamic and cortical axons that grow through it. We suggest that Pax6 might affect thalamic axonal growth indirectly via its effect on the corridor.</p

    Biologically-informed neural networks guide mechanistic modeling from sparse experimental data

    Biologically-informed neural networks (BINNs), an extension of physics-informed neural networks [1], are introduced and used to discover the underlying dynamics of biological systems from sparse experimental data. In the present work, BINNs are trained in a supervised learning framework to approximate in vitro cell biology assay experiments while respecting a generalized form of the governing reaction-diffusion partial differential equation (PDE). By allowing the diffusion and reaction terms to be multilayer perceptrons (MLPs), the nonlinear forms of these terms can be learned while simultaneously converging to the solution of the governing PDE. Further, the trained MLPs are used to guide the selection of biologically interpretable mechanistic forms of the PDE terms which provides new insights into the biological and physical mechanisms that govern the dynamics of the observed system. The method is evaluated on sparse real-world data from wound healing assays with varying initial cell densities [2]
