    Exercise is an important component in preparing for competition. Failure to properly train can lead to performance decrements, fatigue and injury. Scientific based sport conditioning programs are available for a variety of sports. However, there is lack of information concerning sport conditioning for motorcycle road racing. The purpose of this investigation was to conduct an initial study of body mass index (BMI), estimated cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) and exercise training patterns of expert and novice amateur motorcycle road racers. A total of 53 Western Eastern Roadracing Association (WERA) racers provided self-reported height, weight, age, gender, resting heart rate (RHR), physical activity habits, aerobic exercise training patterns and resistance exercise training patterns on an on-line survey. Height and weight was used to calculate BMI. Gender, age, RHR and habitual physical activity were used to estimate VO2max. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was employed to assess total physical activity (PA) in minutes per week. A supplemental survey was utilized to assess exercise training participation, frequency, duration, resistance exercise selection, repetitions and sets. An independent sample t-test was used to compare BMI and estimated VO2max between expert and novice racers. A Mann-Whitney u test was performed to compare Total PA. Pearson Chi-Squared tests were used to compare exercise training patterns.Expert racers had a significantly lower mean BMI (p<.05) compared to novice racers, 23.55 and 25.77, respectively . No significant difference was found in estimated VO2max between expert and novices racers, 46.65 ml/kg/min and 44.31 ml/kg/min, respectively. A significant difference (p<.05) was found in Total PA. Expert racers had a mean total PA of 1110 min/wk and novice racers had a mean total PA of 743 min/wk. A significant difference (p< .05) was established in one resistance exercise (i.e. lunges). Novices had a larger participation rate compared to expert racers in the lunge resistance exercise.The findings do not provide sufficient information to conclusively develop a sport-specific exercise program. However, this study provides preliminary data concerning anthropometric and fitness characteristics of motorcycle road racers. Additional research is necessary to fully understand characteristics associated with improved motorcycle road racing performance

    Planet Hunters. VI: An Independent Characterization of KOI-351 and Several Long Period Planet Candidates from the Kepler Archival Data

    We report the discovery of 14 new transiting planet candidates in the Kepler field from the Planet Hunters citizen science program. None of these candidates overlapped with Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) at the time of submission. We report the discovery of one more addition to the six planet candidate system around KOI-351, making it the only seven planet candidate system from Kepler. Additionally, KOI-351 bears some resemblance to our own solar system, with the inner five planets ranging from Earth to mini-Neptune radii and the outer planets being gas giants; however, this system is very compact, with all seven planet candidates orbiting 1\lesssim 1 AU from their host star. A Hill stability test and an orbital integration of the system shows that the system is stable. Furthermore, we significantly add to the population of long period transiting planets; periods range from 124-904 days, eight of them more than one Earth year long.     Major subpopulations of Plasmodium falciparum in sub-Saharan Africa.

    Understanding genomic variation and population structure of Plasmodium falciparum across Africa is necessary to sustain progress toward malaria elimination. Genome clustering of 2263 P. falciparum isolates from 24 malaria-endemic settings in 15 African countries identified major western, central, and eastern ancestries, plus a highly divergent Ethiopian population. Ancestry aligned to these regional blocs, overlapping with both the parasite's origin and with historical human migration. The parasite populations are interbred and shared genomic haplotypes, especially across drug resistance loci, which showed the strongest recent identity-by-descent between populations. A recent signature of selection on chromosome 12 with candidate resistance loci against artemisinin derivatives was evident in Ghana and Malawi. Such selection and the emerging substructure may affect treatment-based intervention strategies against P. falciparum malaria

    A pragmatic cluster randomized trial evaluating the impact of a community pharmacy intervention on statin adherence: rationale and design of the Community Pharmacy Assisting in Total Cardiovascular Health (CPATCH) study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Traditional randomized controlled trials are considered the gold standard for evaluating the efficacy of a treatment. However, in adherence research, limitations to this study design exist, especially when evaluating real-world applicability of an intervention. Although adherence interventions by community pharmacists have been tested, problems with internal and external validity have limited the usefulness of these studies, and further well-designed and well-conducted research is needed. We aimed to determine the real-world effectiveness of a community pharmacy adherence intervention using a robust study design. This novel design integrates cluster randomization and an outcome evaluation of medication adherence using a population-based administrative data source in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>Community pharmacies from across the province of Saskatchewan, Canada were randomized to deliver an adherence intervention to their patients or usual care. Intervention pharmacies were trained to employ a practical adherence strategy targeted at new users of statin medications. While randomization and implementation of the intervention occurred at the community pharmacy level, the outcome analysis will occur at the level of the individual subjects. The primary outcome is the mean statin adherence among all eligible new users of statin medications. Secondary outcomes include the proportion of new statin users who exhibit adherence ≥80%, and persistence with statin use.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This novel study design was developed to combine the rigor of a randomized trial with a pragmatic approach to implementing and capturing the results in a real-world fashion. We believe this approach can serve as an example for future study designs evaluating practice-based adherence interventions.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov no. NCT00971412.</p

    Neglected medium-term and long-term consequences of labour and childbirth: a systematic analysis of the burden, recommended practices, and a way forward

    Over the past three decades, substantial progress has been made in reducing maternal mortality worldwide. However, the historical focus on mortality reduction has been accompanied by comparative neglect of labour and birth complications that can emerge or persist months or years postnatally. This paper addresses these overlooked conditions, arguing that their absence from the global health agenda and national action plans has led to the misconception that they are uncommon or unimportant. The historical limitation of postnatal care services to the 6 weeks after birth is also a contributing factor. We reviewed epidemiological data on medium-term and long-term complications arising from labour and childbirth beyond 6 weeks, along with high-quality clinical guidelines for their prevention, identification, and treatment. We explore the complex interplay of human evolution, maternal physiology, and inherent predispositions that contribute to these complications. We offer actionable recommendations to change the current trajectories of these neglected conditions and help achieve the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 3.     Shape Analysis of HII Regions - I. Statistical Clustering

    We present here our shape analysis method for a sample of 76 Galactic HII regions from MAGPIS 1.4 GHz data. The main goal is to determine whether physical properties and initial conditions of massive star cluster formation is linked to the shape of the regions. We outline a systematic procedure for extracting region shapes and perform hierarchical clustering on the shape data. We identified six groups that categorise HII regions by common morphologies. We confirmed the validity of these groupings by bootstrap re-sampling and the ordinance technique multidimensional scaling. We then investigated associations between physical parameters and the assigned groups. Location is mostly independent of group, with a small preference for regions of similar longitudes to share common morphologies. The shapes are homogeneously distributed across Galactocentric distance and latitude. One group contains regions that are all younger than 0.5 Myr and ionised by low- to intermediate-mass sources. Those in another group are all driven by intermediate- to high-mass sources. One group was distinctly separated from the other five and contained regions at the surface brightness detection limit for the survey. We find that our hierarchical procedure is most sensitive to the spatial sampling resolution used, which is determined for each region from its distance. We discuss how these errors can be further quantified and reduced in future work by utilising synthetic observations from numerical simulations of HII regions. We also outline how this shape analysis has further applications to other diffuse astronomical objects
